Buell drive belt guard (making my own)

Just recently replaced drive belt on the buell, while sitting in the garage the other night, looking at the belt guard which is crap on my model, I though I could do a better job so decided to have a go.

anyway this is the first proto type.

As you can see in the first pic the guard offers very little if any protection for the belt, As I looked at it I thought for it to work i would have to cover the lower part of the belt as I think any stone that would get court up on the belt would come from the wheel as it rotates round and possible drop on to the belt, so if I cover the top, would stop anything stones getting in.

Sounds like a good theory.

If it works you can patent it and sell your design back to them.

this will be prototype 2 with a 10mm fold down on ether side of belt.

Tiger owners had a similar issue with the chainguard being too short and many made their own. You can now buy them, so some one did well.

Just one thought, sometimes an open space is left to make sure debris exits out rather than getting trapped.

Your on the right track - Are you concerned with it being heavy enough..
e.g - if hit by a stone etc will it bend and stay bent - jamming or cutting the belt drive?

If you look at the last pic, the actual guard will be about 10 to 12mm above the belt to allow for any flex in the belt and also not let any debris or stone's etc get jammed between the belt and guard, that's the theory anyway

Just finished doing something similar for both our bikes.

Used the flat part from the side of a 4-litre oil container plus the cover off one of those Papaer-Plus folders that has clear pages and a thin black plasticf cover.

Some heat, some F2 glue and some pop-rivets and :niceone:

Just make sure the thick plastic doesn't actually make contact with the teeth of the rear sprocket.
Sounds like a kids bike with the old 'clothes-peg-on-the-spokes' at low speed.
And at 50 or so kph it sounds like a Stuka dive-bomber is coming at you from behind.:dodge:

Still need a bit more added to it, will post pics when I get home.

Ok here we go, prototype 2 all done and fitted, there is still room for improvement, but it is basically what I,m looking for.
So now road testing, Im not going to look for any road works or anything like that, I will just ride as normal. see how it is in a couple of weeks.
The hards part was making sure I had enough clearance between the tyre and the guard, ended up having to slot the holes, got my self 5 to 6mm to play with.

This is still only a prototype am think of covering it with Carbon Fibre which would stiffen it up a lot more.

the only hole i have every got was from a tar covered stone in hot as weather, dont no if it went up and stuck or came down and stuck, but it stuck, put hole straight through the middle of belt. 8000 km of canning later the belt snapped on the hole

yeah they put better guarding on your model, they don't fit the 04's bugger.
