I've been given heaps of bikes for free, some going, some not,as payment for work done or ''just get it out of here''.The best one was the Kermit green C50,it was 8 yrs old with 19,000km on the clock when I got it and it was my primary commuter on Waikeke Island, and even brought it to Auckland a couple of times.Park anywhere, cost nothing to run, carry all sorts of shit cause you could ride with one hand...my weapon of choice on a cold wet day...

It's hard to think of the cheapest bike, they have all been cheap - it's what I do.Maybe the 1973 Suzuki TS400,I got this for $100 in 1988,it hadn't gone for about 3 yrs and I spent an afternoon getting it going. It had been used on the Canterbury Plains and was geared to hell and gone again,I'd never get it into top on Waiheke.I didn't like the 19in front wheel and fitted a TM front end on - and it has the honour of being the only bike to dump me on a gravel road.Later I used it on the Waiheke dirt track, keeping the TM forks, but fitting the 19in wheel back in,I also fitted a TM top end and other goodies...a TS/TM hybrid.I raced it for 4 yrs, having the best fun in my life, totaly reliable unless I broke something, the number of crashes I had on it would be in the 3 figures. On the day I left Waiheke in 1996 it wouldn't fit in the truck,so I sold it for $200...twice what I paid for it,I thought that was pretty good considering the thrashing I gave it - oh,what a mug!

The 1997 DT230 I am buying at the moment for $4500 is the most expensive bike I have ever bought,by $2500,this is kinda scary for me,but I sold 4 bikes to gather the money together.I have never insured a bike, they have never been worth enough to worry about, but it worries me enough to think about insuring this one...

[EDIT] oh,silly me...my first bike,a 1956 BSA Bantam Major D3 150cc was the cheapest at $60,sold it for $100,the first and last time I made a profit on a bike...

Cheapest = $400 for a gt185 that was in bits. My dad spent a month or so working on the motor and then put it all together. Worked great as my first bike until some plonker nicked it from where I work.

Expensive = $35,750 for my previous bike which was a new 2001 MV Agusta f4 750cc. A lot of you will poo poo spending that much money on a bike but it was worth every cent. It makes the new 1000cc f4 soooooo tempting being priced just a little more then the 750cc was.

My first and cheapest ever bike was a Honda MB100 which cost me a whopping $250.

Most expensive bike I ever bought was a brand new '95 Honda CBR900RR for $18,000...lost money on it as soon as I rode it out of the showroom! :pinch:

Cheapest was the mighty AX100 which I swapped a 2.5PI Triumph which had had a wiring loom fire, for.The car was given to me so the bike was free.
Most expensive - in terms of the day - $3500 in 1974 for a Ducati 750SS. ( A new Holden HQ Kingswood was about $3000 I think) But, as I already had a GT750, ( which cost $2470) it was either quit the SS, or the wife left. Well, I fucked up on that decision big time! :drinknsin

How much was your cheapest bike (excluding ones given to you as a present)?
Free(ish). I had to paint my sister's roof, and fit some new guttering.
I then stripped it (the XBR500RS Mutant) down to a pile of bits, took the head off and had the valves ground by my uncle's tech class (free), repainted everything, new tyres, WOF etc. ($600). But (BUT!) my first bike also cost $600, and it was only a coupla years old. But that was very long ago, and $600 represented more then, given I was earning less than $1/hour at the time.

How much was your most expensive bike?
Way too much, given that I bought it from TheSharkBrothers, and it's a VFR (they tend to hold their value). My arse has almost stopped hurting from the reaming it got. It cost me $6K more than I got for trading in the FahrtSturm.

First real (aka "going") bike was an ER185TS. Great little bike, went well and did everything I needed of it!

It was the princely sum of $700.

Before that was a CB100 which cost not a lot (can't remember), and then proceeded to break down on o regular basis... actally spend more time in the shop than out of it (literally...)

I've only owned two bikes.

I bought the FXR new for $4400, trashed the hell out of it and wheeled it onto Frosty's trailer two years later for $500 (eliciting extreme finger-waggling from Mrs Random) and then rescued my Zeal from its previous owner (who I don't think lubricated the drivechain even *once* while he had it) for $2500.

$ 50 seams to be a re-acuring figure for me....

1st $50 i spent on a bike, it was a dt100, put the piston round the right way ..... and raced it for a whole season (buckets) before i decided to increase the power....
2nd $50. on a CB 550....... got it going and sold it for $200 (didn't trust my rebuliding skills)

3rd $50. was on the scooter that i have now, the one that luke keeps on falling off... had it now for about 3 years.. still going strong...:ride:

Free - some little 100cc Suzuki which needed a little work. My brother fixed it up and his son learned to ride on it.

Free - GSX250 with knaffed engine, spent $290 on a second-hand motor, $60 on a new set of carbs, dunno how much it's going to cost me to get it to run for more than two minutes at a time...

Often spent "a dollar a cc" on some of the bikes I've bought.

Okay for some reason Kiwibiker's refused to let me create a thread for the last two days...

So I'll talk about my new ride here.

It's a 1996 Suzuki RF900RS, a little more kms than I wanted to get, but still quite reasonable for this bike and its been incredibly well maintained so I'm happy with what I got.

It's got brand new rotors, near new Metzelers, Z3 front Z4 rear, new battery, a good newish chain and sprockets (can't see the front one but) and some lovely heated grips that will come in handy for winter as the temperature in Upper Hutt regularly dips below 0°C. An yup, it's still got the tank bra, and the original owner's manual and toolkit.

I'm waiting for AMI to get the cheque for the FZR750R to me and I will pick up this sucker - the wait's killing me ... not to mention the train trips.

But it will be worth it. It's the American Model (E-03) which means it's the full 118 horses at the rear wheel (135 at the crank apparently) and a MPH speedo which will take a bit of getting used to - especially as how 100 comes up reeeeealllly quickly and smoothly.

It doesn't pull any harder than the fizzer, which derestricted was about 105 at the rear wheel, but it seems to pull that hard for a bit longer, which as a 9 year newer bike and 187cc bigger it should.

Anyway, hope you aren't pissed for the thread hijack. Just wanted to share my joy.

As for what I paid - let's just say it's $50 more than the insurance company gave me for my 1987 FZR750R...

$25 for a 1981 CR125 with a TF125 engine in it, then $100 for a PE250. Both suffered from the same fault, moronic owners who put 30-40 in the tank then let it settle to the bottom and ride like nana's at 2000rpm so they had fouled plugs/carbs/barrels/pipes. a good one day thrashing and they ran like new (all that oil did something good)

heres the PE, the RM/TF was by far the cooler bike (although the PE was plenty cool for a 14 year old
