I was riding over the AHB from the North Shore to Central Auckland this morning around 9am. The traffic was unusually heavy for that time, and while I was at the bridge apex it came to a complete stand still.

What a bonus. The view was great. But the wind - it was very blustery. While the bike is moving it doesn't seem so bad, but being stationery at the top of of the bridge was very notcable. The bike was being pushed from side to side.

Now I think I can appreciate what it is like for the Wellingtonians who have to deal with their bikes being blown over while parked.

Funny how the effects of the wind seems worse while being stationary.

Don't you lane split?
Yes the Wellywood winds have been a might ferocious over the last few days.

You definitely feel the wind more when stopped! Sometimes as I'm approaching the bridge I look at the flags flapping almost horizontally (or worse when they are taken down so they don't rip in the wind!) and I wonder how things are going to be at the top. But so far I haven't had any problems, even when I see trucks and vans going all ziggy zaggy up ahead from being shoved around.

I was one of those naughty people who walked up there the other week and found it surprisingly pleasant at the top. Was nice to stop and enjoy the view for a change, instead of worrying who was going to change lanes into me or bash me from behind.

Happy birthday Harbour Bridge!

The wind doesn't bother me - just makes me ride like a wanker because it winds me up!
However (but!) I've stopped several times on the bridge while communtering, and it's rather disconcerting to feel it move around as the traffic goes past.

Don't you lane split? It depends what lane you are in on the bridge - it can be a little tight in there.

I think he should be fined for stopping unnecessarily on the motorway system. It's worse than running out of petrol! :argue:

I usually do, but decided the AHB is a higher risk zone - and it has monitored cameras everywhere. So I just stopped and enjoyed the scenary.
