Thought I'd do a proper thread about this...

So who wants one or two?

I'd rather send one package Welly way and one down to Chchch and let you'se guys squabble over them like seagulls.

Cost?

You'll all owe me coffees :2thumbsup

Drill a 6.5mm hole about 5mm deep in the bung and drop in a magnet.

They really work...

Edit - how do I send you coffee? Starbucks vouchers or summat?

Try http://www.magnets.co.nz/ for all your magnet needs. Neodymium magnets are the most suitable for a sump plug, make sure to glue it into the plug with an araldite or similar type glue. Excess heat will also render the magnet useless [above 120 degree C]

They are neodymium magnets and I had to wait for the guy to get some in in the size I wanted.

Don't need to glue it. Means you can re-use them. A machining/lathe drill bit would be best (flat bottom) but you're putting the magnet into a bit of steel. It's dosn't come out easily. It would only walk if a bigger bit of steel went past and touched it pulling up vertically without stopping but then you'd have other problems...

Excess heat reduces the magnetic effect but as they're strong little buggers to start with it's not so much of a problem.

Right. I think the easiest way is if I send 15 north, 15 south, keep 20 here for the locals and let you seagulls at them.

I've got to send TransAlper a CD of Big River clips so could send the magnets down to him in the same package?

Sounds ok so long as the magnets don't dent the cd.
Otherwise either Ryan or I are pretty sure to be up there in the next 4 weeks.

Yes they are strong, and they will lose their magnetism completely above a certain temperature, they are also brittle and prone to cracking/flaking without much provocation. Gluing them would give a little more confidence........

Can't believe the strength of these little sods, we have a red granite benchtop with gray in between, well as it turns out the gray has a partial metal content and these little magnets stick to a stone top.

They sure are - that's when my NSU screw fell into the sump - fortunately it didn't make it into the gears and today it appeared on the end of the sump plug as below.

Now - if we could get some big nuts that attracted other kinds of screws I'd be a starter.

No..
drill the hole a bit deeper if possable?.....
then punch the hole over slightly after its in..
Then theres no worry of the glue/epoxy letting go with heat...

if the plug is a bit shy on depth.. drill the hole
with a slot drill "2 flute mill cutter" then yer havn't got the
extra hole depth from the drills point..
PS..start the hole with a drill..It will keep the slot drill centred
at the start...

You want the hole too be about 3mm deep so only one pole of the magnet is in the hole for normal bungs.
JB weld or epoxy for alloy or stainless.

The magnets are good to hold about 0.7kg of ferrous metal.

I've also seen 175deg at the top oil banjo on the head of the TT and the magnet still holds well.

Would love 1 also if poss. Lost sump plug during a Epic Ride off Taupo Rd a cple years back. Had just done an oil change & put in sump plug finger tight. Mate arrived 2 do a tyre change, said I need to tighten up sump bolt, he said he will do. He didn't say . . it was already tight. DR 200 x2 14?mm bolts underneath. Wrong 1 got tightened :shit: Lucky 200 cut out first !! Couldn't thinking noticing how rattly bike was getting. Getting a few tiny tiny shavings/dust in oil changes. Got off v lucky.

These are what I have:
http://www.a2stainless.co.uk/M12-x-1-50-x-12mm-Pipe-Plug-DIN-908-A2-70_AICFS.aspx

The socket is 11mm deep and the overall length is 15mm so it would be cutting it a bit fine.

I make wall crawling robots, to carry instruments up bulk storage tank shells. Transporting one off shore is a bureaucratic nightmare, with supermagnets of that capacity the flyboys insist on up to 1M separation (depending on airline) and that means a 2.5M cube crate to freight something the size of a shoebox.
