on your learners, when you haven't ridden on the open road, ever....
I just don't want a trial by fire if possible.

Why not ride it?? You have to start somewhere. I think a leisurely ride from Hamilton to Auckland would be a great start. Safer than a ride in traffic I feel.

Indeed, but not all get home safe. Whether its wise to do so, well, thats up to the op.

Bloody hell my misus did the full southern scenic route and out to Milford Sound (did about 1200km on that trip) just after she got her learners and she was by her self...
the point is you got to do it some time... so why not now

The cost of hiring a trailer, borrowing a cage with tow bar, abit of fuel and time, and a couple of load binders.

Now you have read Slyer's story, be brave and just do it.
Straight line braking on the motorway has to be 80% front and no more than 20% back. Most do 100% front. Plus, keep your distace from the vehicle infront.
It will be a reat adventure and you'll have someone in a car or bike following to watch your back.
Let us know how you get on.

so why not now
because he's much less likely to suffer serious loss and/or injury if he gets some experience first. Squiggles and myself have seen more than enough learners find this the hard way for our liking - especially with all those cheesecutters on SH1 now if you go that way....
IIRC Slyer's fatal mistake was just grabbing a fistful of brake without loading the forks first. This was compounded by not watching the traffic ahead and expecting the stop, and having ridden that bike it's a miracle he got as far as he did without the front end simply falling off.
the OP here has scooter experience, so atleast he's got a half a clue, but it's still not enough if something were to happen. Plus 70kph is suicide with aucklanders around, and 100kph is uninsured+fine territory.
Perhaps us more experienced forget what it's like to be learning?
biketranz do a good deal, but good to hear it's all sorted.

Ask if someone from akld can pillion you there and then you can ride back together - would be a sweet ride and you'd get some experience as well.

This ride is back roads with cruzy corners or long straights where you can get the feel of the bike and people have enough room to pass you without much trouble. till you get onto highway 1 which is a slow moving grind at the best of times :)
My first open road ride was on a zx6rr for 200km on twisties.
Slow in, fast out
Keep breathing
Relax
But like i said, you have to be comfortable, if you aren't then don't do it.
