Cheers Al. Just what the triboy stable required.

XR650R STARTING TIPS
http://www.dirtrodders.com/images/rightengine_160x109.jpgCold starting: The only difference between cold starting and my regular starting procedure is that when the engine hasn’t been running I’ll use the choke. XRs have two different choke positions—all the way up is full choke, and one notch down is half choke. I use full choke when the bike is cold; the bike will let you know when it wants half choke—it will eventually start running roughly in the full choke position. As the bike is warming, I try to keep the choke in the position that allows the bike to run smoothly, which means in just a few moments you go from full choke, to half choke, to no choke.
As for a typical XR (and most other four strokes), here is what I’ve found works. Push the kickstarter down slowly with your foot until you feel a hard spot. The kickstarter will stop (you may feel a bunch of resistance immediately or you may have to run the kickstarter through its range of motion once or twice before you feel that resistance that stops your foot). Next, pull the compression release lever in and push the kickstarter just past the hard spot—moving the kickstarter about an inch or two—then let the kickstarter come back up to it’s resting position. It’s now ready to be kickstarted. You don’t have to snap at the kickstart lever like you would a two stroke. Think of it as using your foot to shove the lever downward; it doesn’t have to be two-stroke quick but you want to put your weight into it, to get that mass of heavy engine parts—piston, crank, flywheel—in motion. To further decrease the amount of effort necessary to get these parts moving quickly, put the bike in neutral. When you give the bike this first real kick it should start.
Starting a flooded bike: After crashing, I pick up my bike, hold the throttle wide open, compression release in, kill button pushed in, then I kick the bike through four or five times. Next, I go through my normal starting procedure (no choke, the bike is warm). If the bike doesn’t start on the first kick, I repeat the flooded procedure.
Racing start: At the beginning of a race, I use the normal starting procedure. Before the flag drops, I have the kickstarter in the ready-to-be-started position. I put the bike in gear and with the clutch in. I roll the bike back and forth just a little until the rear wheel moves freely, this is an indication that the clutch is completely engaged, so the amount of drag on the engine is minimal. If the bike won’t roll freely with the clutch in, it should be adjusted accordingly. You can’t grab a handful of throttle as you start a four-stroke—if you do it will stall. For this reason, I’m not known for great starts because I have to give up a bike length or two waiting for the bike to be running before I start twisting the throttle and dumping the clutch. I start in first gear.
Common mistakes: Most four strokes I’ve ridden, when jetted properly, don’t want any throttle when being started. It’s habit for most two-stroke riders to twist the throttle as they kick. If I’m helping someone start their bike, I’ll first use no throttle. If it doesn’t start I’ll try using just a fraction of throttle. If it comes to life, that generally means the pilot jet or air screw is too lean or the idle is too low and the engine isn’t getting enough fuel. If the bike had not started I would then go through my flooded procedure to see if it might be getting too much gas, meaning the jetting is too rich.
Four strokes don’t foul spark plugs like two strokes, so don’t jump to the conclusion that this is the problem if the bike won’t start. Spark plugs can get a drop of water on the electrode and stop working, so, if the bike has been around a lot of moisture, you might need to pull the plug out and dry it off. When I know my bike is jetted properly and my starting method is correct, the first thing I do if the bike won’t start immediately is drain the carburetor. It’s easy to get some water in fuel, and fuel does go bad when sitting in a carburetor for a while.

Ya might be right there Clint. However the long, dohey front fork travel that will be really lovely on small corrugations limits the braking ability in some respects due to the amount of dive.
I'm fighting the desire to contact RT about some fork/shock farkles, but as it stands, the shock is in good nick and I can live with the softer forks until I start pushing my limits. (probably never).

Way to much build up :chase:
I'll be taking it easy so as not to endanger myself or any other road users, honest :innocent:
That and figure a 525 on the back wheel will soon put me in my place......(followed closley by mark!)

That is a serious bit of kit. Sounds like it wants a grunter onboard riding it

Ah the fickle nature of motorbikers. It's blue next week then turning yellow after that...

E-09 will balance the TKC80 well.
If you're going much knobblier at one end make sure it's the front.

That's a seriously good deal. I paid $4k for mine and it had done 28000km! The XR600's are wonderful hard-core dirt/adv bikes... Lighter and more grunt than a DR650 (comparing to my mates which is an 07) but not as smooth on the road and kick start of course.
I'm needing to sell mine as I need to get a tourer and can't afford both so if anyone is interested flick me a pm. Just had the top end redone - $1000 receipts. Comes with standard tank plus large one, pack rack, spare set of road legal knobblies. I'd like to get close to $4k for it if possible.

Looks like about 37-38hp at the rear wheel which is 1-2 more than a stock DR650 but less torque.

I'm good.
Since I fixered the dyno at Murray McLeans I'm officially an expert.
I can tell at a glance but hearing it as well gets it more accurate.

Got it all sorted. It was you area of expertise...
I got lost finding the dyno room... No wait... The other area...
The PSU was only putting out 13.8v instead of 14.8-15.3v and it basically wasn't enough voltage to keep the O2 sensor up to temperature during a run where the exhaust gases cool it down.
Got it up to 14.78v and it's a lot more reliable.

Normally yes but can't you hear the air leak just in front of the muffler?

I asked the exact same question @ thunderbike when I had the Triumph dynoed, they said "YIP" buts it's pretty hard on em, best to use an old one.
FYI Trumpys got about 104 hp :woohoo:

Do knobblies work on the dyno?
Yes but badly.
You're going to be reading quite low on the HP with the knobs flexing/slipping on the drum but...
The A/F curve will read nicely so you'll still end up jetted correctly but just not know the true power/torque readings.

Met up with Dino at the Whatawhata servo at 8.30, for a squirt over the alternate "divvy" road to Raglan. (old mountain rd)
Was nice to start to get the feel for the thumper, but the rear brake was wooden, and lacking feed back, and power. (Allan had mentioned this to me, so it wasn't unexpected)
After a quick rest at Te Mata village, it was over Te Hutewai Rd, and into the back of Raglan.
Most obvious impressions:
Fix the rear brake. (already onto that)
21'' front wheels are the shizz:woohoo: (havn't had a decent big chookie since my KLX650 in Perth in 96.
I'm going to love leaving gravel snakes out of corners on this thing. (may as well order a bulk supply of tyres now)
It's tall.
Got a few little mods to do, but it is 95% ready to get me in trouble.

Went to Anthrax's Thursday to sink a pumper carb while we fitted a few beers then shot off down the beach for a test ride.
Felt quite good compared to stocker, bit crisper and lil more oomph, the run along the beach and Waiuku forrest test track was a blast. Handles the tighter stuff pretty well.
Had a further poke n prod at it today, spotted a couple things that will need attention before the 42/Fishers ride.
Been fun but am looking forward to have a longish ride on gravel as not got around to that yet.
