Funny you should mention that. I live out in the harbour and the Cyclists (note, capital C) are a real menace. Well, I say menace, they're too stupid me be a menace I think, they just get in everyones way, hold everyone up then get shitty when anyone says "Do you mind?".
So, I started taking one of said little cameras in the car with me, particularly on weekends, and I have some great footage of these nutters.
I have made several conclusions.
1) - The normal Joe Bloggs on his bike purely to get from A to B is no problem whatsoever. They hear you coming from a mile away and move right over to the side of the road so there's plenty of room for us both. They're great, but they're so few.
2) - The more "Cyclist" gear they have, the more into the centre of the road they ride. Each piece of kit they have directly relates to about a foot more towards the centre line.
So from the curb: Silly bike with silly little tyres, 1 foot inwards, shirt with all thier "sponsors" on, 1 foot inwards, obscene hot pants, 1 foot inwards, silly helmet, 1 foot inwards, silly pedals that your feet lock into, another 1 foot inwards. So far, that's 5 feet away from the curb! Given each lane is only about 6 feet wide, you can understand why people in 4 foot wide cars get a little miffed at not being able to squeeze past.
3) - The more "Cyclist" gear they wear, the more other "Cyclists" they attract. They seem to go round in groups, or Gaggles if you will, and insist on riding side by side on these thin, winding roads leaving no one else any room and also seem to be so engrossed in conversation about how much more "Cyclist" gear they've got than other people, that they simply don't hear cars approaching from behind and thus don't move over.
The shirt with their "sponsors" on is a testament to their stupidity. A sponsors primary role is to pay for things/gear in return for advertising, like having a name on a shirt.
It's guaranteed that all these "Cyclists" paid top dollar for each of their shirts. They're paying a company to advertise for said company. Shouldn't that be the other way around?
I reckon the reason they ride round in groups of 3 is because they all have 1/3rd of a brain cell each.
Ok, I know this has turned into a bit of a rant. It's late and I find the "Cyclists" out here piss me off more than the mozzies. At least Mozzies know when to get out of the way!
I don't know whether you've deliberately set out to cause offense here or not but you've certainly succeeded and to be honest I find your attitude offensive. People like you really piss me off. Not impressed.

If the Leda Valley is gritty, sorry count me out. Its a grand to change the belt drive on my bike.
Has anybody been that way recently?

Without wanting to start anything or get into anything really, what i can say that i personally witnessed today on the ride home from Hokitika was this. We were riding in Staggered formation not that far out of Hokitika. It was extremely windy. There was about 6 of us. We came up behind a double trailer truck that was getting blown around pretty badly as we all were. We came around a bend and up ahead i could see 2 cyclists riding side by side and both looking at each other and obviousily chatting. They were approaching a left hand bridge theat narrowed across the bridge and right on the bend as well. They didn't move into single file as the truck approached or even stopped talking or looking at each other actually. Because they were riding 2 abreast the tandem truck had to swerve out across the road and had to take the corner on the opposite side of the road and we also had to swerve around them. Up until when i went past them neither of the 2 cyclists moved into a safe single file to make it safe for them or anyone else. If a car was coming the other direction the truck driver would have had to make the decision to lock up the trucks brakes, or hit the cyclists or hit another vehicle head on. I personally use to be a search and rescue officer for The Royal New Zealand Coast Guard, a base officer. I also had a job as a skipper of a charter vessel and had the responsibility of peoples lives in my hands on a daily basis. Safety for yourself and the lives of others is not to be taken lightly. Whether on the water, road, or air when i personally see a situation unfold like it did today it really let down the "Cyclists team" you might say. The point is there are good cyclist and bad, good car drivers and bad. The same goes across the board. If the good cyclists want to stand up for their rights well fair enough but they need to educate the bad cyclists of the habits that are causing the mayhem. The same as in our community when the good motorbike riders try to teach the inexperienced or the over experienced riders sometimes as well that hey its not just your safety to worry about. You need a license to drive a truck, car, bus, taxi, moped and motor bike on the road and we're all trying to share the same spot and get back home safe again to our families. I ride cycles and motorbikes and see the different situations often as we all do. I have riden Dyers road many times and when the road is narrow up around the top riding 2 abreast is asking for trouble. If there were to motorbikes riding 2 abreast up that road it would only be a matter of time before the inevitable would happen. We ride in staggered formation for that very reason "safety". Each rider has good visability and has the use of the entire width of the lane. Riding 2 abreast narrows both riders room and their own safety, gives themselves less room and also anyone trying to pass from behind and on coming traffic also. Anyway thats my 2 cents worth..... Not wanting to offend anyone just facing facts

Guys, hold it!
@thepom - Whilst I was trying to raise concerns about some things, the way I went about voicing them was totally inappropriate! The last thing I want is for what I said to cause further harm and rifts. Offense was not what I intended nor do I want this to turn into a slugging match!
This is obviously an important subject to some people but this is not the place for such a debate nor is the way I went about starting it appropriate.
We should be able to discuss things in a rational, mature and adult way but my comments were definitely not any of those.
I apologise to all for what I said, it was totally out of line.

Normally for the Greta Valley ride, we ride through Scargill. I don't know the condition of the Scargill loop, only the road before and after!
Flip, the note for the Leader Valley road, was just for caution as I know that there are a few people that like that road and was giving a warning so you can take it easy!

This is not the place for a shit slinging match about cyclists. This is a discussion thread for the Weds Night Rides. Now I don't want to hear the word cyclist again, unless it's directly follows the word "motor".
Ok, now we'll head to Greta Valley this week, via Waikari & Scargill. I'll put a google map up soon and by bajeeezuz I'm going to come this week!!

Ok for those of you that weren't able to make it to the Woodstock Rally it was terrible anyway, rained all the time, camp site flooded, bands were bad, and roads were wet and covered in snow so you can head off now knowing you didn't miss out on anything....ahem...... right..... now that they have gone actually it was Bloody great!!! Yee ha what a cool rally! I went dressed for Antarctic conditions as it drizzled leaving Christchurch and arrived in Hokitika to tropical heat! The roads were great to ride on over there and the atmosphere was really inviting. Heaps of very impressive bikes to drewl over and lots of people to shoot the breeze with and enjoy the company of fellow bikers. The bands were great, the burnouts smokey, the boobs were buxsome and the beer flowing although drunken sensibly to be able to drive past the lovely breath texting officers who wouldn't let ya ride out the gate unless you passed the breathe into this test! I personally didn't see anyone fail so that was great! It was great to get to know some more Wednesday night riders and some KB members. Would i do it again HELL YES!

Just a heads up though, as I know there are people that do other rides, you may want to take note that the Leader Valley Road is very very gritty, they are re-sealing the road at various sections, so if you do this road you should be very cautious.
Going over the Waiau (sp?) bridge gave Ewan a wee salute on the way over!
Very gritty indeed ... TWO sections of NEW SEAL with EACH about a kilometer long ... with LOTS (and lots) of loose chips. pour the power on on the hilly bits and you'll get wheel spin.
ps: helmet slaps I can contend with .... I need more armour in the chest area ... due to pokes in the rib's from my pillion ... on the day.....
note to self ... be BETTER next time ...
Hey wait for me!

A poem for the biker, and all that this means
Helmet, blacks leathers and a pair of blue jeans
The bike that you choose, fast, slow or cruise
Just comes down to the person or what doesn't break the purse strings
Classic or modern, theres something for all
A single,twin or triple,four cylinders or more
Theres just something about, the wind in your face
The freedom,or challenge of winning that race
We all have our style, burst the gate or just glide
Full open throttle or just smell the roses along the side
The wide open spaces, long straights or the turns
That voice thats inside of us and oh how it yearns
A look out the window, the weather looks great
So eager to get out there, Oh i can't wait
To climb on the bike, when two become one
Open roads ahead, now lets go have fun
To meet with our friends, who share the same love
A kinship or sorts,we all wear the same gloves
A passion for motorbikes,a lifestyle as such
There's nothing for me, that i enjoy quite so much
So when out on your bike, and another rides by
Give a wave or a nod,it could be me riding high

See ya all there. I personally like the greta valley rides. They offer the chance for a bit of low risk fun. The (usually) good surface from Waikari to Greta Valley lets the pace rise a little and some nice flowing corners allow the nice pace to be held without needing to jump from throttle to brakes and back again. I find its a great road for learning how to corner smoothly, rolling into the corners with little to no brakes and just leting the bike flow through them with a gentle application of throttle on the exit to keep a neat line is a really fast safe fun way to ride. In fact i think i will offer to do a 2nd run back through to Waikari and return to Greta Valley for anyone that wants a little "pace" practice. Not RACE practice PACE practice. We souuld be back at Greta Valley by the time the hot chips are ready to eat...

If I gas the big 10L tank up at Amberly, think should be right for the return trip back to Amberly, any ideas how many K's the route is from Amberly and back to Amberly ? Think its 24 Hr garage in Amberly ?
Don't want to be caught out like last week when took the wrong turn before the black tulip and ended up in the boonies up Kahtuna valley where I hit reserve :shit: Limped back to the main drag and jugged along at 80 before coming to a grinding holt miles from Tia tap - could just see the town lights.
Lent the big red pig over and got some more go go juice and made it to the start of Halswell - man it can go far on one carbie of juice I thought ...... another lean over and got to the BP in Halswell.
Mrs was not impressed when I arrived home before her  I had texted her to be the rescue party with the gas can back out in the boonies on the other side of Taitap. 10.45 PM I got home - 11.15 PM for the Mrs.
Think good for around an average of 140KM a tank full - depending of course on how much the throttle wound on. Maybe its not even that given the short run last week - mind you the group I went with over the hill with we were not mucking about. Got from Kaikoura to Amberley at xmas on a tank - hit reserve in Waipara.

100K round trip from Amberley and back again according to Mr Google, shouldn't you be sweet with your reserve ? Can you strap a 5L fuel can on somewhere ? Failing that as wisely said bring some garden hose to be on the safe side.
Given the open road cruising speed you should be sweet :)

I don't know the mileage (so to speak) but I also have a 10L tank (granted I'm on a 250) and I fuel up before getting to the car park, then I fuel up in Amberely on the way back. Would probably be able to do the whole thing on one tank but don't want to get caught out. The petrol station (I think it's the Shell) is open as we go back through!

Yep, was a nice night. Thanks to you for giving me some one to follow! :) Sorry I had to take off at Amberly. I realised I had a long ride home. By the time I would get to the harbour it'd be late and my bike is not the most ... subtle ... noise-wise. In the bays everyone can hear everything, I try not to ride too late. Started typing then thought too much, so put it off-thread in the blog - http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/entry.php/1341-Headlight-thoughts-after-a-bit-of-night-riding ... For relays, check out the Daniel Stern Lighting link half-way down, that explains it all!
The cruise control is fully "active", not a "throttle stop" or lever - throttles-up for hills and down for downhill overrun etc. It's an AudioVox CCS100 DIY retrofit kit for cars/whatever - you used to be able to get them thru Amazon for abt $100US (although getting one to ship internationally is almost impossible, got a friend on a K1100 forum to ship me one, about $300 here - my Xmas pressie!) Nice design since they can work off either a speedo sensor OR the ignition coil... "output" is a mechanical cable to the throttle bodies, run via vacuum power under control from the electronics. Certainly nice for chilling out on longer rides (like 90% of the way home). :woohoo:
Just need to stop waving at other riders with my right hand, now! :eek5:

And just what are you insinuating? :p
It'll be a while, if at all, 'cause it has no REG (on hold), WOF or insurance and I'm broker than broke.
Plus, it may have a bearing going on the front sprocket shaft bit. I was quoted about $600-ish to fix as it's an engine pull and a case crack.
So I don't want to ride it and cause more damage. I start it from time to time

Haven't got millions :weep: but would suggest getting a Haynes (if there is one) and seeing what you can DIY - even if you don't end up doing anything yourself (and you might just be happy with doing the engine pull and saving those labour hours!) you'll be able to make sure you're not getting bamboozled (of course, if the mechanic is someone you really trust that might not be a worry).

Likewise man. Such a nice bunch of peeps on these rides. :)
I was thinking, I have 3 other cameras that can be mounted to bikes in various ways.
I can mount one as a helmet cam (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcJqEFjywMo )
and one can be clamped onto just about anywhere (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL05RQheUjo )
Or all but the one with the wide lens on it can be clamped.
If anyone is keen to give one a go for some extra footage, or just to record your own thing on these rides, let me know and I'll try to find enough batteries.
oops, just remembered. The wife is on holiday and has all the SD cards so will have to wait three weeks before we can use them if you're keen, unless someone has some spare 2gb SD cards lying around ;)

Thanks man, am getting it now but it's for the 750F which is a different bike. It's basically the exact same bike as the ES with a little extra fairing on the front. The exact title of the Kats is GSX 750 SE. I have the manual for the ES of the same year which has a little addendum for the Kats on the end. They actually didn't have their own manual at all, I guess 'cause they're the same bike.
I've looked at doing it myself but to tell the truth, I don't know if it's beyond me but it'd certainly be pushing it! One little bearing but it's right deep down in the engine. I rebuilt my old Kawasaki GA90 waaaaaay back in the day but they're so simple you can do it with your eyes shut! Plus I had Dad helping ... i.e. telling me what to do ...
Attached a pic of where I think I need to go in the engine. Not familiar territory!

Yeah, that'd be about it - 2 part crankcase/tranny case, you want it upside down to get the bottom half off with as little disturbed as possible/practical (eg leave head & pistons in - with oil WELL drained - and probably generator & clutch out as they'll either span or cover items that span the split-line.... Once you can get to that shaft, it's dismantle as described (Pullers?) and replace bearing (might need a press and/or heating the bearing - old saucepan on a camping-gas stove could do) then replace all seals just in case & reassemble. Not trivial but if you can allow a good few nights to take your time and triple-check everything you might surprise yourself!

Thanks for the vote of confidence :) but that's not something I want to tackle by myself, plus I don't have ... well, pretty much any tools, so I think I'd rather just save up and let Kevin do it.
Kevin Giles (KG Motorcycles), brilliant mechanic, nice guy, doesn't charge the earth and if there's a part he can't get or is expensive, he'll just make it from scratch!
Been going to him for ages now, top bloke.

Don't stress on it, you won't get left behind and you probably won't be the only one riding a small 2 stroke either. Just rock on up.

It'll be a while, if at all, 'cause it has no REG (on hold), WOF or insurance
Plus, it may have a bearing going on the front sprocket shaft bit. I was quoted about $600-ish to fix as it's an engine pull and a case crack.
Mines in the same boat as you. No reg, no WOF etc.
Execpt mines going into the shop today to get the engine and suspension completely redone. And I think that if I talk really nice to them they will perhaps take everything off the frame for me so I can get it repainted. Then after I've paid for all that and have a wee bit more dosh, I'll get all the fairings welded back together and get all the plastics repainted.
I also have a set of original 4 into 2 exhausts to go on and the center stand. Should hopefully be all done by November.

You lucky lucky bugger! Another thing I've been wanting to track down is a centre stand. Mine's got the 4 into 1 exhaust, dunno if one'll fit, looks like it should ...
Don't talk to me about plastics, I've had to get mine done, in the exact same spot, three times! Bloody expensive but I didn't have to pay for any of them thankfully.
Look forward to seeing the end result :)

I picked up the 4 into 2 and the center stand for $150 on trademe. A steal I reckon as Ive seen a center stand go for $60 before.
Im guessing that you had to get your side panels done? Both of mine are cracked. The front fairing is in one piece except for the fairing surround behind the speedo.
The engine in mine has done 110000km's and needs a new 2nd gear as the dogs are worn, it also burns more oil than petrol. I do hear rumors of getting the gears modified so that they push together rather than apart when the power is applied which sounds a heck of a lot better than what I get at the moment (an unusable 2nd gear).
The bike handles a bit like I'd imagine a fridge freezer would if it went around a corner at speed with both doors open and me inside it. I got the bike when it had around 75000km's on the clock. So I guess Ive done 30000kms on it and neither me nor the previous owner ever touched the suspension. So those will be looked at.
I'll also have to mention the loose connection in the wiring loom up near the head stock that causes the speedo lights to go out going around a left hand bend (sometimes they come back on sometimes they dont and require a bit of fettling to get them to come on).
The only thing that Im worried about is how easy it will be to get decals. Its easy enough for the printers to make the red Suzuki lettering down the tank and other block stuff but a panel beater I spoke so said they couldn't do the katana symbol that goes on the side panel.
She'll be a gorgeous bike when she's done. One I'll happily polish every weekend and ride only occasionally and keep away for the kids (heaven forbid) to look at and ogle over the same way I do to my Dads Laverda.
Also if you ever need a look at a katana manual, I have a hard copy that is much easier to read than the blurry pdf copy floating around the net.

Kevin Giles (KG Motorcycles), brilliant mechanic, nice guy, doesn't charge the earth and if there's a part he can't get or is expensive, he'll just make it from scratch!

Kevin Giles (KG Motorcycles), brilliant mechanic, nice guy, doesn't charge the earth and if there's a part he can't get or is expensive, he'll just make it from scratch!
Been going to him for ages now, top bloke.Don't want to turn this into a flame war but...
He did a lot of work on my old GB, he bored it out to 600cc and managed to pretty much stuff it right up, I had it back to him more than 20 times and he kept forgetting leaving brackets loose, cables unattached, clamps untightened, cables melted, I don't think he replaced the head gasket and it was leaking oil everywhere - when I took it back he managed to snap a headbolt and insist on charging me for drilling it out, the new bolt AND the replacement gasket! - it seemd to keep coming back to me with more problems than resolutions each time, he kept making excuses like 'oh it's a big single it'll do this and that' etc...
I finaly got sick of taking it to him, He kept saying it'd be done by the end of the day then getting it back days later unfixed, I took it to Honda Country in Ashburton by reccomendation, turns out he was running it so lean it was completely off the chart, we were all gobsmacked - they said 'i hope you babied it over to us' and I had been riding it hard for the past months as Kev said it was 100% fine and was running like it should, but it ended up only putting out the same power as it was as a 500.
He also managed to:
-Put a few scratches on the paint here and there
-Break some cooling fins off the engine and not fix them
-Metled the clutch cable against the engine, he did replace it but left black rubbish on the engine
-One time after picking it up from him my indicators wern't working properly, turned out some wires around the headlamp (he would have probably checked when looking for electrical faults) were cut and arking against the frame, he told me he noticed they were going to fast and he check and found that one of the bulbs was the wrong wattage... I checked later and they wern't.
-He drilled out the Jet in the carb rather than replacing it, then didn't scratch off the measurement on the side which really threw us when I took it elseware.
He was a very nice guy, and I don't for a second think he did anything on purpose but he clearly overlooked things many many times and did not take care.
I am still very angry with the situation epecially since I had been recomended him by a few good people (And warned off him by a few others), obviously he's good with some bikes but as I said, I had nothing but problems.
OK My Rant Is Over, I just don't want this to happen to anyone else, it was a big waste of time, money and bike.
Sorry guys.

It's probably going to keep doing what it's doing now. It's barely rained all day and I don't think that will change. It will be cold though. Come down to the carpark anyway and check things out. Then decide.

So I got a bit delayed at home last night. I knew I wasn't going to make the carpark in time, so I shot over Dyers Pass and around the bays towards Lyttleton expecting to eventually come across the group going the other way. Sure enough, on the Sumner side of Evans Pass there's a long line of bikes heading up. It was quite impressive.
Good to see two ZX-9R's along, so many lady bikers and Tom on his very shiny NSR. Welcome back mate.

That little patch of loose shingle on the Scargill Valley rd last week was sort of a non event.
I know that Flip was wise to slow down because of his belt Drive,
But, well, umm, it was just shingle ............
I guess that riding road bikes on shingle roads is not something a lot of you guys get to do.
Just relax and enjoy the feel of your machine dancing under you,
Its sort of hard to put into words the way to ride on shingle or grass with street tyres on a heavy bike,
but once you get the confidence to do so, it can become a lot of fun,
its just a different style of riding you have to adapt to.
I;m sure there are some amoung us, like myself, who rode shingle roads many years ago before the advent of modern machinery that can only really perform on sealed surfaces.
