Trying to come up with alternative routes to the Cold Kiwi and was looking at Benneydale to Ongarue - here

http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=benneydale&daddr=porootarao+to:waimiha+to:ongarue&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=-38.696229,175.309353&sspn=0.097803,0.222301&ie=UTF8&z=11

Is this a sealed road ?

Waimiha (in between Bennydale and Ongarue) was is my old home town (lol, town!!) growing up as a farm kid.
The road has been sealed for years, you won't find gravel unless you turn left at Waimiha bridge up Ongarue Stream Rd, and continue up as far as Kokomiko Rd. From there, you'll find some good gravel past Piropiro sawmill site and up Okauaka Rd to PiroPiro Flats camping area.
The sealed section is a good tight little country road, ya should have fun all the way thru to Ongarue, then a brief section back to SH4 to Taumarunui.
I don't think you're likely to see a cop! Well, until SH4 anyway.

He would have been havin a snooze. Not much happens out that way.
Except for the occasional MVA or cattle rustling.

Paturoa- it'd be great on the SV or the DR. Enjoy the ride my man!

Xgnr's GPS has had a spastic attack and is telling him that I'll take us an extra hour to take this scenic route.

Can't see it myself, so I'll post back a trip report just for this section when we get back.

The road from Te Kuiti to Benneydale is a pearler. Good flowing corners, road is in a good condition and no sign of the tax collectors. We went straight past the turn off

and looped back.

The road thru Waimiha and Ongaru back to the main drag was fun, but there were a lot of road works at the northern end and a bit further on around the middle were heaps of white paint markings where there are about to be a lot more.

When the road works are done I'd give it an 8 out of 10.
