I have lot of good friends and know lot of hard working Maori people so I don't appreciate that, you jugging all of them just because of few individuals. I know what people you talking about and there is lot of Maori's among them because they belong to poorer social group for whatever reason we can go on and on about it, but not all of them are Maori, some of white man in Auckland bagging and it is not base on race, that kind of stuff is normal all around world .When I come to NZ I spend nearly 4 mts on street, didn't know anyone and no were to go, so I came across lot of pore and homeless people like that. If you get to know them you will found lot of them are really nice people, they will share little they got with you food clothes ...and down to earth with good sens of humor. Just different reason why are they end up on street, some for short time, some don't know how to get out of it.
But what you really should do is educate your self and ask him why is he doing it and see his perspective and his way of life, then if you so smart give him suggestion, help and advise to another way of leaving his life. Like I'm doing it for you "chef get real bike and life you looser" .

I used to frequently get asked "have you got $3 for the bus?", inevitably outside one of the many gambling places in Southmall. The first few times I gave what coins I had in my purse (which is not usually much - cash is something I rarely have these days). But it did get really annoying after a while.
I just say now "sorry I have no cash on me". It got to the point where I was waiting for the day I'd get the bash because someone refused to believe me.
Having said that, I'm wondering if Southmall management have done something about it as I haven't been asked for quite a while now. Either people complained about it, or maybe it's just that I avoid going to my local shopping mall (if you can call it that) as much as possible.

i refuse to give to beggers. been asked both here and in canada, and always give a flat no, sorry, no cash on me. the most pathetic was a very overweight drunk guy sprawled on the steps on a bar in palmy nth. yeh, like im gonna give you money so you can go continue drinking. tui. another was an obviously drunk american indian who asked for cash early in the morning to go to rememberance day events in another town. i didnt carry any cash while i was there, so he got a no as well.

The begging issue in NZ is much less than in other countries, try walking through Brussels railway station....you can be accosted every few feet...and yes, they do :bash: you if you don't hand over your cash!

Great thing this site, only place where you can voice an opinion and get shit chucked at ya.P/T but in a serious manner, part of a lifestyle he/she lives, there can be many reasons why they're street bound.
Also have a looksie in Sydney parks around the inner city.I did a red bus trip in 1998,walked from Kings Cross to next stop as had all day to do trip, sat in a park to have a drink, this lady about 45 sat on the seat along from me,asked if I had enough change for a coffee, said yep and got her one(rather than give her cash and she take off)ended up that she was the daughter of some wealthy parents, told them she was lesbian and they told her to piss off.She had her own penthouse appartment(but rented it out as she couldn't afford it,after family job went)she decided to do it rough, see peoples attitudes were to homeless and write about it.She did this for 3 months living on the streets.Turned out her folks had died within 3 months of each other, she went to the last funeral, and her sister let her into the will, and everything was sweet. But the people she met living rough were ones she wanted to help(those that wanted to help themselves)into jobs etc.Fascinating story and kept me amazed for almost 2 hours.

I am however quite willing to give to any busker that entertains me as I feel they are earning their money.

You need to accept that there are people worse off than you, avoid, or give. Over to you.
From what I've seen, even in Auckland and Welly, we don't have problems as there are overseas with beggars.
I can laughingly recall, in a city over the ditch, on the bones of my arse - enough money for a train ride home and a drink, CV underarm - 33 degree heat, beatin the feet, looking for work from 9 till 4.
This one guy I came across, very tidy - shirt, clean, asked me for a dollar, (yes I gave him one - had to score a paper cup and get water from the public sink) then I saw him hitting anyone up who crossed his path.
And still going when I caught the train home!!
I figured he was more well off than me!!! I went home and did a rough calculation of his weekly tax free earnings, and figured I was looking for the wrong job!!

Reminds me of an incident last Sunday evening...
I was leaving the supermarket, round 9.00pm I guess, when a guy comes up and knocks on the window. Wind down window. "Wassup?" I ask.
He tells me he and his Mrs and the kids are stuck in the carpark because they don't have any money for petrol to get home to Papamoa, having come down from Albany. Been stuck there three hours so far...:weep:
Being a merciful sort of fulla (who is also a fucking cynic), I decided to check things out. Told him I had no spare gas. He said money would be fine (I'm sure it would have been!). I asked him how he was going to get the gas once I gave him money. He said he would walk. "How you gonna carry the gas?" I ask. "Got a can" he says.
So I told him to go get the can and I would drive him to the servo and pay for some gas for him....He walks over to the car (actually a big fat SUV). I follow. He meets me half way back - "I don't have a can Bro" he says.
Now this supermarket has a gas outlet attached. His SUV is right beside it and I see it is still open...I ask him "Why don't you get gas from this dude here?" Comes the reply "Oh I had a bit of a fight with him - he wouldn't give me any gas..." So I volunteer to go sort the servo dude out. :oi-grr:
Go in there. Servo guy in there is just a kid, working nights I guessed. Ask him about the guy outside. Tells me that another guy had withdrawn $40.00 and given it to him a wee while ago. They had driven out of the park and then come back for another go soon after. Suggests I go talk to the security fulla inside the supermarket. Which I decide to do. :Police:
I go back to the SUV. I asked them about the $40.00. His Mrs goes off her face..."Why the fuck would we be here if someone gave us $40.00?" she rants. Bad move sister - you just evaporated my sympathy...:Pokey:
So I said "I'll just pop inside and see what I can do to sort this all out huh?"
I head in and get to the security man - one tough fulla indeed whom I often chat to when in the supermarket late at night. He draws my attention to the fact that the SUV is making a very hasty exit from the carpark....so much for being "out of gas". :ar15::ar15:
Overall: If he had been genuine I would have helped within the limits of my means. But I always suspect sob stories. Which is why I checked him out. And he was, indeed, a bullshit artist. :nono:
Alls well that ends well huh? :sunny:

I very nearly died one day on my Black Bobbie, and sorta walked with a new lease that day.
Some dude was playing his harmonica pretty fucking good in taka, just outside BK. No hat on the ground, no tin, but obviously could spare a couple bucks.
Gave the guy a twenty and he had kittens, bought me a BBQ bacon double cheeseburger, guy had class
Sure some people are real lazy, greedy type fuckers who just sit around going GISS A DAWLLAH, MATE! But they are not forcing you to spare a couple bucks.
Just walk past, like most other people do.

When I was up in Dorkland a few months ago for Xlan, we stopped in at Wendys in Manukau, and we had this freaky old asian dude hit us up.
As we were walking out he hit us up for money. We went back again a few days later and the same guy comes back this time he wandered into the store, sat down next to us and said "money money you gib money" in a bad accent. After being told to fuckoff he got up and shuffled off. Was quite random.
I think we should round up homeless people and put them to good use. Like .. pet food or fertilizer (or even soap and lamp shades kekeke).

Having worked in welly for a few years at that end of town i know what youre talking about chef, had a couple of fullas opposite pidgeon park outside city stop do the same every day. But seriously - they are only asking and actually pretty politely most of the time. Have on occasion given a few coins to them but if i dont want to i just smile and say "not today bro - but ill see you tomorrow eh" they are friendly as, i think just for someone chatting to them like they are people is rewarding to them too.
So if you cant suck it up then walk a different route pal.

Quoted from Scrooge
First Collector: At this festive time of year, Mr. Scrooge, it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute.
Ebenezer: Are there no prisons?
First Collector: Plenty of prisons.
Ebenezer: And the union workhouses - are they still in operation?
First Collector: They are. I wish I could say they were not.
Ebenezer: Oh, from what you said at first I was afraid that something had happened to stop them in their useful course. I'm very glad to hear it.
At the risk of sounding like the gentleman above; we are living in a welfare state aren't we? God knows we pay enough in taxes, is there any justification for beggers in NZ?

Interesting that "$3" for "the bus" would be in coins - just handy for the coin gobblers in the local. (Of which we have sooooooooooooooooo frikken many in Shit-wa, but that's another story, don't get me started).

Although a lot of beggars use the money for booze, pokies etc there are some genuine people out there.
One skinny guy with no shoes asked me for $2 late one night, I had it so I gave it to him (normally I don't) he then walked straight into the supermarket and headed to the bakery section where they had discounted the days unsold items. He grabbed two loaves which were a dollar each and paid for them with the $2 I had given him. That's what you want the gifted money to be used for but sadly isn't always so.
