I did 40,000 on the set that came on the bike when I brought it and replaced them with some kiwiX HH sintered pads.

killed them in 11,000k.

Was talking to the shop as I was ordering new ones and he seemed to think 11k was good value.

thoughts?

how long yours lasting for?

If I'm not being good less than 5000km. Touring and stuff about 10k but the Zed is a heavy bike.

The Zed's first set of disks and pads only lasted 10,000 kms. Think yourself lucky.

I previously owned a Yamaha FJR1300. It had done about 84,000km when I sold it. I changed its front pads once at its 60,000km service. Mind you, I ride like a nana and never have to use my brakes.

Comin' up 22,000km on the original front pads and rear shoes, so far. Also on the original tyres which are finally starting to show signs of wear.

10,600 on the originals so far - makes mental note to check them tomorrow. I expect a lot more as they don't get a hard workout. The rear should last forever.

You have reminded me - I had a 1983 Kawa 750 twin I purchased new and sold 23 years later with 110,000 on the clock, I went through a few fronts, but the rear had a drum brake - I never needed to replace them!

EBC on at the moment. One up from OEM and one down from full race. Before that similar SBS pads. Hardly Chinese. Hardly cheap.

They weren't worn out. They warped. They weren't blue or under spec thickness. The pads were organic shite with no bite at all and were nearly done in. The bike shop could see no reason for the disks to be warped. The Metal Gear disk replacements show no appreciable wear and the same set of scintered pads that went in when the disks went on aren't even half worn 25,000 kms later.

Just to get you all snarly, the latest theory from the experts is...so long as everything so far as fitment goes is true, rotors don't warp. The run out and pulsing you get is caused by pad material transfer......

It depends what sort of bike it is, and what type of kilometres it does.

Hornet 919 probably goes through pads in around 20,000km, hard to say, the shop simply replaces as needed. Wears front and rear at different rates. A huge number of commuting kilometres, very little engine braking etc, the pads are used a lot. Discs are fine after more than 62,000km though.

Blackbird, some commuting, a lot of open road km, I think the first set of pads lasted 30,000km all round, just into the 2nd set...

KTM990SM, 23,000km there's still plenty of life, but it does a lot of open road km, and with such huge engine braking, I don't use the brakes a lot.

They were fine one day and the next they were causing double vision for normal stops.

Experts are tools.

The 1150 tourer is on 64000 km - never changed pads yet - will have them checked next service.
It is all long distance riding though not city riding.

Did a set in the FZ1 but I did'nt really need to but I had spares left over from the Ace and they were the same caliper so I thought what the hell...
The 14 has done around 23k now and the pads are okish but I might replace them soon, I don't really see the point in flogging the last out of brake pads, particularly in performance machinery.

The front of my Fireblade has lasted 13000km (still going) while the rear replaced at 11000km. Original pads when bike was new. I use my rear more than my fronts.

my gixxer k7 ones were the same.. i swapped the rotors out to Brembo about 5k in and added some race pads

I don't "comfort brake" I am just doing the speed I want to be doing for the corner before I get to it... makes the ride so much smoother...

When I do brake it usually gives my friends a bit of a fright the are usually wondering what the red light is on the back bike is .... lol

On my sv650s I got about 5700km from the last set of front pads (Premier standard ones) doing a mixture of track days, weekend rides and touring (riding to the track days).

"comfort braking" is a really bad habit. just to clarify.. I dont actually brake.. but pull the brake on to check if it is still there. comes from riding a bike with really shit brakes for so long.

Got my shit together and got some new ferro pads and some cleaning and now I have brakes. Went for a blat this arvo and now when I touch the lever the bike slows down! A little foriegn idea really but Ill get used to it.

ummmmm. might be worth a crack.......... shit my bike stops now.. having the front diving though cause I hitting the brakes much harder than I expect... or they work much better (or they actually work) than they did before.

Good shit, but is that lever travel any better?

cowboyz

oh hell yeah. thats where the "feeling" gets odd. Full brake is only like 2cm on the lever and it doesnt hit the bars anymore

HH pads are soft race(ish) compound, so those km's you did are quite good really, for that spec pad.

cowboyz

o man! I got that wrong... I thought HH were touring high distance pads.

whats the recommend for road riding then?

Yet to ever replace a set of pads.

I guess the compression decelleration of an HD V-twin slows things down enough to make braking optional....

Well, last time I replaced the Discs on the CBR with some Metal Gear ones... I smoked the brand new Metal Gear pads within 90 miles around Manfeild!

A good story for the pub that one....

Replaced them with my old 1/2 worn pads, and they lasted for ages...
My new set has lasted quite a few track days....

Can't really say how long they will last, and to be fair, the track time is in no representative of a normal life....
There is only one way I can keep up with the big bikes on track days.....
