Some members may know that I have a rather large head. Not large enough to cause lunar eclipses, but nearly. Buying helmets has always been problematic. For many years my only option was the Shoei XR1000 XXL with some "modification", administered using a carpet knife, ice cream scoop and a service station bollard.

A couple of years ago HJC stepped up to the plate with a couple of models that ran to XXXL. I bought one. Much heavier than a Shoei and without the features that come with a premium helmet, but not too bad otherwise.

Recently I decided I needed a new second helmet and decided to try my luck online.

I ended up at www.ridersdiscount.com.

On Thursday 27 August I ordered a Shoei XR1000 (RF1000), XXXL, in metallic anthracite for what works out to NZ$560.00.

It was delivered today. I wore it tonight.

The fit is fantastic. I love it. It also came with a breath guard and chin screen thrown into the box.

Given the disinterest local suppliers have in doing non-standard fits, I have no qualms whatsoever in buying helmets online. And with service, quality and pricing like this, who wouldn't?

Big head or wrong size helmet?

But congrats on finding one that fits, it sure does suck when you get something that you have to use/wear for a long time and it's uncomfortable.

Is the US XXXL the same "size" as the European market XXXL, Hitcher?
I've wondered for a while whether the RF1000 and our XR1000 are sized the same

That's one big head XXXL!

Now - is it in proportion to your body, because you'd just look weird if your are 5 foot tall .........

My sons very tall for his age with a good sized head to suit his frame - I just tell him, big head = big brain :woohoo:

According to Shoei san they are. Rest assured that the RF1000 and XR1000 are one and the same model.

Check out the deals they've got on Arai as well as on Shoei! For a rough and ready price comparison, divide the US price by 0.72 to see what it's likely to be in NZ$.

ridersdiscount is an awesome site. I got an HJC IS-16 helmet and a Cortech tail bag delivered last week. It took 7 days! And I got them both for NZ$50 cheaper than the helmet's NZ price alone. Shipping cost included.

I found that the sizing felt a little smaller than the NZ sizing, but I think that's only down to it being new, and my last helmet was getting on a bit.

Ha! I have the opposite problem to you, i.e. a mega pin head! See here>>> http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1129378258#post1129378258

Also have struck a bit of reluctance for local retailer to bring in an teeny, weeny lid for me. Have a couple of options but I'll check out your link if all else fails. Thanks!

I would venture to suggest that, after such modification, the Shoei was no longer a premium helmet.

Hmmm. New helmet smell...

For those of us a few years out from a new helmet:

I have an old Shoei Raid, the model without removable pads. It had become pretty noxious inside so I tried a can of Carburol Helmet Sanitiser ($12).

Two applications later (the entire can) my helmet is a much more pleasant place to be. I had tried warm water/hair shampoo a few years ago, this product gives a better result, and does not require the long drying time either.

I used to clean mine in the bath with bubble bath they leave out in the sun upside down for a couple hours - job done.

Good tip on that website hitcher - good prices there.

... www.ridersdiscount.com.

Yeah I bought a Arai TX through them last year after much research on the Arai sizing (moving over from a Shoei, and previously, AGV). Fit perfect.

Excellent service and just about $500 kiwis landed, which is about 50% price if I were to buy it here. Of course, I'd be disappointed if it didn't fit, but then again I'd buy another one and flick the first one one on TM. As for taking the chance of returning the lid if somethings not right or broken, I guess I entirely rely on QA standards the producers of excellent quality gear put their wears thru, and manufacture to, to believe that the goods I receive won't fall apart the first time I wear them.

Hitcher just you wait until Rob Taylor sees this post and starts going on about you buying overseas and costing New Zealanders their jobs!! Sure you could have gone to your local shop and got them to beg the Shoei importer to indent you an XXXXXXXL or whatever helmet and then had the priviledge of waiting 6 months (or more) for it to arrive and paid $1000+ for it. But then your conscience would have been clear right? ;)

And it would have only been available in black or white for about an extra $250.

I did post a thread some weeks ago giving NZ bike shops a chance to match the US online deal.
