......... Sells usually gets everyone on the hill and all those near the front just allow him to pass (boy the Bonny can corner!)
On the Paekak' Hill maybe but last time I followed him on the Rimutakas, I passed him to avoid being dazzled by the shower of sparks...
I have noted the comments on the various threads and have to agree that the riding etiquette, by some on this ride, leaves much to be desired.
Yes, and in the past I recall a lead and TEC were assigned to mentor the slower and beginner riders.

Left home here at 5.50pm gutters dry, Duckpond - well good for the ducks misty rain. Got home at 6.50pm streets and gutters still dry.

Hmmmm. Just read some of the content from last 2 pages.....
Since when has the WNCR had a 'designated' ride leader? Not in the period I have attended anyway.... I have never seen anyone get miffed for being passed, Sells usually gets everyone on the hill and all those near the front just allow him to pass (boy the Bonny can corner!)
Thought we all do our own ride? Own pace, mind the slower guy as you pass him? Be carefull and always encourage safety...thats been the way I have experienced it anyway but I have only been on KB about 7 months or so
It usually just falls into two groups that naturally sort thier own order.......the slightly quicker riiders usually break away on River Road.
Never seen any indication of the cranage being described in the previous page, however i was not there that night so cant comment
Will be there tonigt, and expect the usual haggle over destination and the usual ride order sort to occur....see ya all there
Been doing this ride on a regular basis for the last 3 years and it has gone through changes like everything The main one came about when it was noted that someone need to take responsibility and be responsible for everyone
What was said back then was we would turn up at the duck pond, chew the fat with a few other bikers and if a biker rode off in one direction and a few others went the same way,it was not a organized ride
I suggest the name should be changed to the Wednesday meet at the duck pond
If someone puts up a event on the calendar they should become responsible to turn up and take control or delegate to someone they trust to organize a leader, tec and briefing.
I did this for 4x4 trips...got the permits...got the keys ...signed the papers...did the briefing....etc...etc.
I agree with what Stoney said and the only problem we have is when slow bikes go to the front and hold up the others
This has become one of the safest rides I go on these days.

Bugga. I turned up at the Duck Pond tonight at 6.26pm. I waited for 5 minutes and it seems that I must haved arrived too late. Hope the ride went well. I made an honest attempt but it seems I stuffed up my timing. Maybe next time.

You must have missed us be mere minutes.
No ride tonight.
I turned up to find Buck Buck sitting there by himself. Then shortly after Lilly2W and Ukiwi turned up. That was it. So around 6.20 - 6.25 we decided home, lasagna and beer sounded like a better idea than a ride in the rain.

mmmm beer and lasagna do sound good. Good to know I didn't muck it up (actually skived off work and hour early to get home get my bike in time). Saw the rain had kicked in in Wellington, but it was rather pleasant in Upper Hutt. Not to worry, I had a nice wee ride on my own, did a bit of a ticky tour home. I'll try again next week (hopefully the weather is much better).
Enjoy the booze and food!

As a returning rider, I am following this thread with interest.
I'd love to do slow, learner appropriate rides with experienced riders. the point being to gradually work my way up the skill levels. Without regular input from those experienced riders who are ABLE AND WILLING to teach, the tuesday night rides sound like a bit of a blind leading the blind experience.
just as an aside here, this has gotta be one of the more restrained and respectful threads on KB.. Im so proud of yous fellas, I knew you play nicely if you wanted to.

You are correct on all counts. When you feel it is appropriate it is very useful to attend an Advanced Refresher Course, particularly as a returning rider. On two courses I have attended, quite a proportion of those attending are 'returning riders.'
Perhaps you may want to come out to a Tuesday ride, meet a few of the 'experienced riders' and make a decision there to go for a ride, you are more than welcome.

How about...
TFR
Yeah.
No, see what the problem here is, is that some of the CWNR dudes are so fast they're there again the week beforer, before the slightly more sedate riders have finished.
If'n we had a friday ride some of us'd have to slow down some, or we'd meet last weeks Friday Night Fang coming home.
I think.

the alternate ride proposed is now in this thread:

Tuesday and friday etc - sort them out yourselves. General crap will be moved to PD or rant and rave depending on the crap in them.

From the summit heading to Featherston on the 1st tight left hander the linkage between the gear change pedal and the motor snapped in half so I was stuck in 2nd gear, after riding back up from Featherston I stopped on the down hill slope and forced it into 4th by hand for the rest of the ride home to Miramar. :(

Well I shot over Haywards but was running a little late. Reach the car park opposite the quarry bang on 6:30 so pulled over rather than passing the crowd heading in the other direction as I headed south to Avalon. Waited.....and waited......and waited......until 6:40.
You obviously decided to head in another direction rather than over either of the hills.
Came home and cut the grass instead.

Thanks KoroJ. I am trying really hard to be in the right gear on the hill, instead of being on the break all the time. It's mostly the straights on the highway I am having trouble with. Completely fine on a nice night and I seem to keep up with the pack a bit better. But add a teaspoon in head wind into the mix, and she slows right down when in my top 2 gears. But I have some training coming up soon, and will just keep practising.
Thanks for your help too, much appreciated :)

Its nice, getting colder though. Getting ready to part the bike for the winter.
Riding here is nice, roads are pretty good but a little flat. No police anywhere except cities so people just drive whatever speed they feel like. A local cop told me they dont do speed traps on high speed roads because they want people to look at the road and not look out for cops and drive 'irrationally'. You seem to be more likely to get pulled over for hogging the fast lane than for actually overtaking someone at high speed.
Here are some swedish roads for you:
