I once got told by a not-so-reliable source that during one particularly windy day a strong side wind took a biker AND his bike of the North Shore bridge.

Is this true, has anyone else heard of this? Dunno how long ago it was.

I can understand the strong winds as I have experienced some myself, but surely they would have to be gale force winds to do that.

well, even on a non-windy day, you can still coast down the hill bit of the bridge.. May be the wind might slow your decent off the bridge..

I've heard of bikers been blown into traffic on the bridge, nearly happened to me a few times too, but so far so good. As for anyone being blown off the bridge, I wouldn't be too sure. The rails along the side, altho not confidence inspiring, do look tricky to get over with a motormicycle..

I've seen the results of a van that was thrown off the road by wind, so Im sure it could have happened. The scariest thing about the van leaving the road was the fact that the fence it went OVER wasn't damaged at all.

Haven't heard of it but have sufered the effect of the wind myself.

Side wind, leaning into it on a long straight (heading north about Marton), and a truck went past on the upwind side...

the sudden lack of wind made me go right in a hurry...

the sudden presence of a truck to my right made me stop for a change of undies.

NOT fun (but funny to look back on... aaa to be young and naive again)

I know of a guy some 15 years ago who was riding across the Auckland Harbour Bridge in one of the 4 middle (original) lanes & was smashed into one of the large upright beams and landed up in hospital for quite some time. I've not heard of anyone being blown off the bridge though.

Havent heard of someone going off the harbour bridge.
15 years ago I clipped the barrier on the Greenhithe bridge with the edge of my hand and the bar end. Wind gust blew me on my whale BMW K . Mind you it was during a cyclone, and everyone other than an idiot was tucked up at home. No cars comming as I over corrected [ read panicked! ] into the other lane.

My poor little bike suffers punishment from the wind - had a few close calls on the bridge - thats why I get it over and done with quick (re: very quick). That way I might beat the wind lol.

I've been in 140k cross winds, scary but didn't feel like it was going to pick the bike up.

I was blown off the bridge once - fortunatly I was able to make a parachute out of my Spidi jacket and landed safetly on the deck of a boat going under the bridge. The boat was doing a shoot for a porno film and by a stroke of luck I landed on top of a gunman trying to have his evil ways with the actresses.I spent a couple of days recuperating on the boat, being administered to by the girls...I don't really remember much of that part,I seemed to be exhausted all the time. When I was well enough they brought me back to Auckland, and the director was so gratefull for me saving them from the evil man,he took me all around the bike shops, saying I could take my pick of any bike I wanted,no expense spared - So I got an orange Suzuki FA50,the bike of my dreams....the girls gave me a good send off the next day...you can still see the stains on the seat of the FA50....

:eek5:  If there is a wind strong enough to blow around a K-RT I do not want to be there. Next thing would be an introduction to the Tinman
