Umm,
Aaron, hate to say it... BUT as successful as this site is, not every motorcyclist in NZ is a member.....

I'll take it back if he abused you and said he would red rep you on KB or some such thing though....

I yelled at a biker today  Little shit about bowled a couple of elderly people around a corner. He came to a skidding halt and nearly fell off. I would have really laughed if he had.

Idiot push bike rider, barrelling around a corner on the footpath.

Think he got a bigger fright than the couple he nearly knocked down.
:sunny:

In my experience there is usually a good reason if you get yelled at

PS: I did not yell at you, unless of course it was you on that push bike of course.

BUT you should have had your gear on. Average cost of a minor accident - $61,000. We want to keep ACC as low as we can.

That is only because every journey includes close to home.

There is just as much chance 6,000km from home but few journeys are of that length - so the stats say it's more likely local.

I spoke rather sternly at one today also, he couldn't hear me because we were both moving in the opposite direction. Over the Ahuroa hill on Woodcocks (its pretty tight), a left hander to me and a righty for him, but he wanted a bit of my side as well 'mate, ya cant see through dirt''! ...very notible correction mid-corner for Mr BMW rider.

You can collect slowly over the coming years through reduced increases to your ACC premiums.

I don't think not wearing full gear is worth a yelling at, everyone knows what you SHOULD do (just like wearing ur seat belt) but ultimatly it's your own choice if u follow that or not. I definatly support ATGATT, but i wouldn't exactly work my self into a lather over somebody wearing sneakers and jeans either.

6th September 2009, 20:15
Most fatal accidents(of any kind involving motor vehicles) occur with a 3 kilometer radius of the deceaseds home.
So you got yelled at by another biker for not having your gear on, big deal for you, till you do crash and we've all got to pay even higher premiums for our(bike) insurance and once again the Gvt puts up the registration of bikes, way to go.You just do your own thing and don't worry bout the rest of us jack.

I agree. The most I'm likely to do is shake my head and think "hope they don't come off". Hardly worth actually yelling at someone over.

Personally I think it was very rude of whoever it was, and they probably have just as many vices or bad habits that someone else could yell at them for.

Ignore it, but remember if you do come off without gear, don't moan if the end result is not a nice one.

Aren't you a new rider? I think that riding any distance without protective gear is not a good idea for an inexperienced rider. Not that I yell at people that fail ATGATT, I may think a few things about them - but it is their skin, not mine at risk.

I'd be willing to bet money on that being the case. 2-3mm of cowhide versus the puny skin that we humans get from the factory?

Imagine getting your face to the road, and then sliding your nose back and forth for a moment or two on the surface... Doesn't appeal? Now try it across your whole body at 50kph, using your skin as the friction to slow yourself before hitting something solid and unfriendly...

I have scars across my back from competing in cycling and using lycra as protection, so I speak from experience....

Look at every single bike fatality over the last decade and then tell me how many of them were on scooters.

Right, Point proven I think.

Losing some skin (even on your feet:whistle:) is far less likely to kill. Though there is no doubt barefoot is pretty stupid.......

Now, if that scooter was capable of instant acceleration, a top speed of between 200 to 300km/h and was common place on NZ's most dangerous roads then the story would be different.

What is your point .... Those who take off skin cost acc a fortune ... Those who die cost far less ... You don't have to have a huge accident which is at speed to cost a fortune.

But then a lot of the ATGATT crowd probably donīt use their bikes as daily transport and get dolled up for their Sunday rides.

Daily Transport on a Bike, (IMO) is even more so of a reason to be ATGATT.

My hubby rode the Guzzi to work often, daily in the Summer, in full leathers, a full face helmet, boots, and an oilskin. Light on.
Mind you, on the preface to his demise, ATGATT didn't prevent something long and thin, passing through the layers, through the body, through the lung, and out the back of the layers too. Not pretty.

The point is that riding a scooter in bare feet is safer then riding a large road bike in full gear, so what gives anyone the right to be all high and mighty when they are doing shit far more likely to cause major injury and death in the event they fuck it up.

Well this all comes down to the fact that we, as riders, shouldn't ride at all due to ACC claims and costing the tax payer more money. Had an argument about this in class the other week, and me being the only rider, everyone decided to have a go, but after i told them the biggest danger on the road was them in their cages, silence dominated.

Point is, if we'r going to base all the arguments for ATGATT on simply ACC costs and tax payer money, then it's inevitable that we shouldn't ride motorbikes or scooters at all due to that same reason. Best to just think of it as 'tough love'. Despite all the ego bashing, we shud watch each others backs.

Get one of those stebel nautilus's, activate to eliminate any extraneous noise. Best results achieved by activating said stebel and cupping a hand to ones ear (or thereabouts on a helmet) to illustrate the lack of hearing.

Mate, are you the Grinch who stole Xmas? Are you this much fun normally?

I'd just like to point out, that for about 80% of the time communting in Auckland traffic, scooters are doing the same speed I am (although they don't do it on the back wheel as much, granted) on my slightly modified Vespa GSXR.

Now, sit back, relax, have a shit or a beer. A frown is a smile turned upside down and all that shit.

I would suggest that one of the greatest dangers is motorcyclists buying into the bullshit that car drivers are our greatest danger.

Well i consider as a rider who uses my bike for commuting, cars would logically be my biggest threat. I was explaining to my friends mum who has been driving for over 50 years that she has a blind spot and needs to check both mirrors and turn her head before changing lanes!! I don't see a hell of alot of drivers checking their mirrors, let alone turning their heads to check if it's safe to turn or change lanes.

I don't exactly blame them, in my 5 years of being a cager i had no idea there was a blind spot until i learnt it at motorcycle lessons i was taking about how to position yourself on the road. They aren't exactly taught very well.

You should check the stats on how far from home most accidents occur... Dan was just popping out for a bite when he got nailed.

No, a motorcyclist's biggest threat to themselves is not adequately allowing for, or not noticing, possible dangers that occur around them.

Lose the 'blame the cagers' attitude and you'll survive longer.

My survival depends upon my skills upon handling my bike if i come across a threatening situation. But what puts me in danger is more than often another vehicle on the road (i'm not just saying a cager, i went for a skid down a road once kuz some biker whisked past me, clipped my wing mirror and giving me such a fright in the wet that i flinched. Had my L plate on an everything and only had only 300km of experience behind my belt)

agreed, fault is rarely completely one sided.

Your survival depends not only on your skills of bike handling in dangerous situations, but in your ability to avoid such occurrences altogether. As Katman says, you gotta stop blaming the cagers and other motorists for any near misses, and instead figure out how your actions, or lack thereof put you in that situation. For instance in your example a biker passed and startled you, how bout checking those mirrors a bit more?

You could be dead - i drive through Parnell every day like a moron, and there are 1000's of us who run over shit, in that area. Hell most are not as considerate as me - i look where i'm driving at least.
But your right, riding gear is for when you ride over 1km away from home. I mean you don't want to dirty it all the time

I sincerely applogise for the rude biker who reminded you of your own safty, how inconsiderate of him.

Fuck the BS PC ATGATT nazi's :angry2:

I 'generally' am but thats my choice isn't it?

If all the PC softcocks get their way we'll all be riding the fucken bus and wearing hi-vis to walk to the dairy to get booze and smokes and takeaways (assuming we can't think for ourselves on that either)

I'll take higher ACC cost's instead of being told what and when and where I can do what I want.

It's my life to do what the hell I want - If I die riding nude, heart attack or from lung cancer so be it.

(I'll take the riding nude option by preference)

I agree. The most I'm likely to do is shake my head and think "hope they don't come off". Hardly worth actually yelling at someone over.

My thought goes "I hope they do come off".

Then I yell at them until it happens.

Wasn't me, but you should take it as a compliment, someone you don't know actually cared enough about your safety to say put some gear on...

The stats prove that most accidents happen closest to home. he/she probably didn't want you to end up as another bonnet trophy.

Nah, it was a KBer that had just paid his rego and didn't want the ACC levy to go up again next year due to riders being inadequately protected on short trips.

People should lie and say it was a skateboarding accident then instead of filling out the 'i was canning my bike on public roads' option on the acc form.

or stop falling off.

I know which i'd rather.

A friend of mine rode down to the shops for some smokes on his TT250 wearing jandles. A kid on a push bike swerved in front of him, so my mate braked and put his foot down. The jandle strap between his toes was pulled right back to his ankle. The dumb arse was on ACC for about a month.
He should of just walked the 1km or put on some shoes.
