Hi wondering what would be the best choice out of these two for enduro/X-country.
Also what sort of mods are best to convert the YZ to enduro.
Cheers

I've had both a YZ250 and currently a 250EXC, I far prefer my EXC. Sooooo much better to ride.
For the YZ theres not that much you can really do to convert it, possibly a flywheel weight?

You'll find you have plenty with a 250EXC. I weigh around 100KG and its sweeeeeeet, pulls hard =) Such a high quality bike as well, I havnt had any problems with mine. Nothing

You're pretty light. I raced a 200EXC and that had heaps of power. Considered that?

i vote the yz... due to the versatility and the price. might be kind of one sided though haha.
I have no worries in tight technical trails... no flywheel weight and a top end pipe on it as well. Its so light you can put it anywhere, lift it out of shit, and cruise up pretty much anything. And its so smooth and gets so much traction its crazy. Yet somehow hits harder than my mates KX250.
You really dont need to do much, if anything to turn them into a enduro machine. Suspension softening and bash plates are about it. [mine doesnt have either as I fmx it as well], which brings me to my next point. YZ will happily cruise around a mx track, up huge snotty rocky hill climbs and though mudholes, then go jump some 120ft gaps should you want to. It can do anything.
I payed 5500 for a 08 yz250 with 25hrs on it a while back, If i wanted a exc i would have been paying 10-11 grand for one with so little use.
Ill be sticking with YZs until they stop making them.

The dudes only 65KG, I think a YZ would be far to evil for him. He wouldnt need all that power. But yehhhhh, I reckon you'll be faster on a smaller bike.

Im only 75 and as you have probably noticed i wear the bare minimum gear, so we are only 5 or so kgs different.
Had a crf250, no way id go back to a smaller bike. Ever. The YZ carries so much more momentum and has so much more bottom end. If i was still riding the CRF we would prob still be stuck up the gut buster
Just go test a few exc's and a yz. Then decide.

Im going to beg to differ on this one... Ive got mates with YZ's with flywheel weights and swear by them.. Yz's have the best power from all mx 2strokes. Jetted right, fly wheel weight and gnarly pip they are the ducks nuts.. Id ride/race one.. look at rory??

Yeh I agree. I enjoyed my also.
I just think having a 65KG rider on such a powerful bike is abit overkill, where as a 200/250EXC are more mellow/more manageable.

I'm 65 Kg on a heavy day and I love my 250 2 strokes. My CR has a pipe but no flywheel weight and it's easily manageable. I'd much rather have excess power (that can be tamed down if need be) than not enough!

Im not after the power that will rip my arms off haha more the torquey mellow botem end still with the power up soft sandy hills.. I find my 125 just not enough torque

The Ktm200 Hundy is surprisingly torquey with a 125 size frame and still plenty of zap as well. You very very seldom have to clutch it out of turns or to get up hills in the sand. I had an 01 CR250 and find the Ktm much more user friendly for the woods etc. Not that the Cr didn't do the job quite well but the Ktm200 just is much easier for me. You can still wang it like a 125 if you want.
I got one and like it so I won't crack on to much but at least go try one. There's been plenty of threads on here about them.

sweet thanks i have had a ride on 1 before and wasnt too dif from my 125sx. think a 200 is the best option for me as its light.

The YZ will probably feel faster but you'll probably set better terrain test times on the excs. Lots of power isn't always the answer when you are talking about 3-4 hour races.

Yeh thats what I was gonna say.
When I had my 200EXC I felt as though I could chuck it on my back and carry it around hahah, light and nimble. Plenty of power though _b

ive noticed that for some reason the 4strokes are usually cheaper than the 2 strokes, when buying 2nd hand.

I agree but they're mostly Japanese. An 07 KTM with only 60 hours on it for this price is very rare.

200s are good fun not sure fairly smooth in the higher gears but mine seems very snappy/touchy in the lower gears from a closed throttle I have left the trail a couple of times by acident on the back wheel by giving it a little gas when reaching for the brake. it loves to be thrashed but will quite happlily run a gear high just on the edge of the pipe
test ride a few

Turn the power valve back/out 1/2 a turn Tommo!
That'll take you 30 seconds and fix your problem! Flipping magic the adjustable power valve in the two hundreds!
Ps don't forget to unwind the locking bolt first?
PSS: can't remember what year yours is but if it is a later one an has the dual curve ignition box go buy the switch for it (not the $70 Ktm one the $25 one from Triple X) and wire that in as well. I have mine hard against the grip, within thumb reach, and use it frequently!
