View Full Version : Low speed bin and thanks speedtech/kiwibike/star insurance & quasi

With cold tires, a greasy road and sleepy brain I headed down Wairere drive to go to work. The Mazda in front stomped on the brakes because they didn't see the car in front slowing down :eek5: I pull the brakes on progressively and think of exit strategies, then the car in front stops dead  Progression goes to all brakes, all on. All of a sudden I am at 45 degrees lean with no hope of regaining and my brain calls out "pull the chute, your out of the plane" bike goes down at roughly 50km/h as I cut away. I slid for a bit, angled and rolled up onto my feet and picked the bike up just as it stopped sliding. I had made enough room to miss the car in front by about 3m and I pushed the bike away from oncoming traffic on the way down. It was probably about 45 seconds from brakes ON to upright and on the side of the road.

I have a couple of bruises but nothing really and I didn't mark my new shoei :sweatdrop. Thanks to quasi: the racer 9 saved shoulder and elbow damage and those gloves and their palm sliders saved my wrists and gave me the slide control to get onto my feet :Punk:. A couple of people stopped and asked if I was ok, the guy behind asked me how I got on my feet and the bike up so fast. My answer was "I am not happy but I am mostly unharmed, thank you" followed by a  look. I thought to myself at the time "nah, low speed wont cost much".

So I rode it to Speedtech. Damage report: frame damage, right side fairings, couple of engine plates, muffler, right controls and mirror etc etc... comes to $holyshit :weep:. Called Kiwibike, did the forms and faxed them back. Kiwibike process everything else over the phone and hand it on to star insurance. Speedtech and the insurance assessor agree with damages. Not long after the repair is approved Speedtech suggests to the insurance company that I just take their shiny black zx10-r with 3500km on the clock and they work out the odds and ends between them. My old bike wasn't written off but the damage equated to the upgrade cost somehow.

I paused for about 3 milliseconds :done:

So cheers Speedtech, Kiwibike and star insurance for the great service and the new bike and thank you quasi for the excellent armor that prevented a whole lot of harm to my body.

Everyone has moments when they aren't on true form, to soften the blow I've devised a couple of ideas (that I knew already):

Have your brain switch on with the ignition
Look way ahead in traffic
Give yourself plenty of room and escape paths
Have good gear & wear it
Know good people in the industry
Have insurance with the right people

It rattles allot less and its got allot of banana's but hard to tell the difference beyond the tires, i put diablo III's on the last one and this one has pilot powers. They feel good but it feels like they don't have the same grip, maybe they will last more than 3500km...

Willie said it would have less power than the last one because it wasn't thrashed for a season by sloan but i haven't noticed so far.

Priority one after a bin is to leap to yer feet and make sure you can still walk...seems to help if you are able to wander aimlessly in circles grunting for a bit too.

Its later on everything starts to really hurt :eek5:

Yeah bro :devil2:

I am pretty sure he's getting a new helmet in the UK he's there now :)

It wont be that noticeable, i mean he's normally 5 or more km ahead and he's got the alpinestars jacket and i got the quasi gear :)

Glad to hear you're OK. I just got some Quasi SPS gloves too so nice to hear they worked well and let you slide with some semblance of control.

mister.koz
10th September 2009, 16:12
Yeah man those gloves are awesome check out the sliders in this pic :woohoo:

When people put their hands down in a bin they normally go palm flat and slap the road, hurting or breaking their wrist, these let your hands slide with the rest of you. Remember its not the fall but the stop that hurts, same goes for different speeds of seperate body parts!

:woohoo:

:D could have been ALOT worse! So I am takin the positives from it.

Although my imagnination has reminded me a few times how badly it could have gone. There was a bit of oncoming traffic and they weren't slowed to 50, they were probly doing 80+

Just happy i got out alright and stoaked i got a new bike :)

Nice story, congrats on your new bike. Good on you for being so honest about exactly what happened. Hopefully you and others will learn from your experience and keep safe following distances.

The PP's really don't tell me anything about the road, they are fantastically nimble and the control is so precise but i am not getting much (if any) feedback while hanging thru corners... i might drop them a couple of psi and see what they are like when they get hot...

Its a really strange feeling! Specially combined with the lack of rattles... its like i am hovering through the air...

I am guessing that will change when i get my new tires and my arata system on the bike...

LOL Koz, your boyfriend is gonna be pissed!!! Didn't you get your Shoei after him as well. Brilliant. You two make a great couple to tell you the truth.
:girlfight:
Good to see you came out of it better though. I was talking to Quasi on Sunday. It sounds like he sells good gear but bloody hell, everyone tries to test it! It must be a thing you guys have with him with you buy it.

Seeing as you've had a change of bike and tyres in one go it may also be the bike which makes it feel different

I thought i heard someone blowing a trumpet.

Just goes to show we both have excellent taste :bleh: in bikes and helmets.

The quasi gear is great aye, and quasi's a top bloke too, can't really complain :) I've seen the result of road versus quasi gear at high and low speeds and i am sold.

Hard to say but the feedback is definately allot less than the diablos, the bike's suspension was exactly the same, in fact they set the black bikes suspension to the settings on the green one!

Yeah, he's got allot more experience in riding under his belt tho :) and his 4 is a complete nutcase of a bike hehe Kawasaki admitted not long after release that they were surprised the 04 was allowed past the moderation without complaint.

You'll see it soon :)
