View Full Version : Kiwi Biker American Iron Meet?

As laid out in another thread this is to guage interest in the idea of an American Iron meet for those of us on this forum(ish).

It's an idea that kind of fizzled out last year but I think it would be a good one.

So far my ponderings have come up with this basic format:

American bikes (yeah yeah - hard cheese if ya aint got one, save up and fecking buy one)

2 or 3 nights

East Coast of North Island (nice empty roads and practically no-one lives there so we'd all have to travel - which is the whole point). As a starting point I've found this little gem of a place which caters for all budgets:

http://www.lake.co.nz/

I figure to make this a go we'd need 20 or so confirmed by the end of this month. I could quite easily bring my whole club along but its only fair to get numbers from here first.

So

wot say you?

I lived in Hawkes Bay for two years and heard how beautiful the place was. Trouble is, the road was reported to be a freakin' goat track, best suited to tough old cars or 4X4's. Last I heard it was a gravel road, rutted and nasty. Things do change though.....

Any locals know better than me?

From ze website:

The remoteness of the region is one of its best features, but as such, there are only two directions from which to enter the region:

# From the North West, State Highway 38 from Rotorua and passing through Murupara comes down past Lake Waikaremoana and onto Wairoa. It is a scenic and winding road that offers good access to the Eastern part of the park, although it requires care and sometimes experiences some heavy traffic.

# From the East Coast there are two ways to reach the Lake. From Matawhero (near Gisborne) take the Tiniroto road which then joins State Highway 38 at Frasertown, this is a picturesque route through bushclad hills. Or head south from Gisborne along State Highway 2 until Wairoa (this is a much easier road to travel on sealed road), then take State Highway 38 once again.

By then my bike would have sold and I'll be riding a Triumph.

Personally I think you should call it what you have, Promote it as such, but allow all makes of bikes.

I'm sure you could profitably use the time to re-straighten your spine and get some feeling back in your arse cheeks...

Ah - you missed the cunning plan. By excluding jap sportsbikes we obviate the need for ute's to come along and sweep up bits of mangled plastic on every 3rd corner

Just a helpful hint ....the road from Rotorua via Waikaremoana is a gravel goat track so if you like your chrome I would advise a different route.
Absolutely brilliant country tho, great place for a ride.

I figured it was entirely self-serving and contrary to everything I said in the other thread.

Though that may translate into public spirited....................

OK some good replies.

The exact date can be open for debate for a bit yet but I'm leaning towards the last weekend in February.

The exact location likewise can be debated for a little bit but if not Waikaremoana then somewhere east of lake Taupo would seem to be best. A little away from the tourist traps but still accessible. It would be helpful to know for certain if there was some sort of sealed access to Waikaremoana.

As to the make and model specifics......I could be persuaded to go as far as Anglo-American iron. To be blunt it depends on who wants to give it a serious crack and who is prepared to assist.

I do believe that if this is going to really get off the ground then the final date, place and format have to be settled by the end of this month.

As stated initally - I'm prepared to lay the groundwork for a concept such as in the OP.

To make it easier to keep the discussion on track :tui:

Comment on the following are invited

Date: Proposed last weekend in feb

Venue: lake waikaremoana

Bikes: American or Anglo-American

Date, Just pick one, Thouse that want to be there will do what they can to be there, No date will please everyone. End of Feb sounds fine to me.

Location-Love it, Though only if the road is sealed.

From ze website:

They're full of shit.

The road to Aniwaniwa is dirt / gravel for miles from either direction, just not quite so many miles from the Wairoa end. The sealed road they are referring to is SH2 between Gisborne and Wairoa - not SH38 from Wairoa inland.

Nice little camp ground but. Very nice.

Personally, timing between all other events is paramount, and I suggest mid -late January. :woohoo:
Theres nothing on in the South Island at that time, now that the Remarkables Rally is defunct.
Lake Waikaremoana looks fabulous BUT lets make it 1 year in the South (Blenheim/ Nelson) and the next in the North (Martinborough / Paraparamu)

More central for all American Bike fans.

Fuck! I'm with you dude. Much more central, fairer etc. The Y-ra-wrapper has some neat spots to check out, southerners can enjoy the Ree-moo-tuckers on the way, good plan, Stan. I don't mind the ferry trip, late jan works, call it..!

What about Lake Ferry? I've never been there, is there any accommodation? Kapiti Coast? (Tatum Park?)

Any advice on the best tyres for Harleys? I have a FXD 08, did 12000 miles in the states, got back here and it didn't like the roads so I wisely took it to Crown Kiwi and had it Ohlin'd out, best thing I could have done as it now feels sweet but the Dunlop/HD's don't feel up to the change in ride ability. I have asked about all the other brands but no one seems to know much, importers refer me to US reviews but I don't think they relate to NZ road conditionsor riding styles. Can anyone pass any ideas on.

Some good comment and suggestions. Keep 'em coming.

I'm pretty snowed under at work at the moment but I'll try to distill things down to a definite date and place over the next week.

There's a bit of a scarcity of offers to assist in organising I notice.......:argh:

I always used Conti Milestones on my last one, they were "tested" a lot and I never had a problem with them.

I can't come along on ewt like this at the moment. Too many family / work / home commitments. That's just how it is.

So, if you ever decide to just arrange a local, regular meet for American iron, I'd be up for that.

Cheers. See you on the 5th.

Funny you should quote that post, I still haven't sold it.

Shes on Trademe at the moment with a 10 grand reserve.

Which means a loss of about 10 grand once you count all the money I have spent on her and add it to the loss in value.:angry2::angry2::angry2:

Things have drifted off a little to be honest mate. Been a bit of drama in the club. At one point we were looking at setting up a bike show (its a constant source of amazement that AKL doesn't really have one) but the word is that the 81's are looking at doing something so we'll leave them to it.

What about your crew and mine getting together for a few laughs one weekend in Feb? Say around Taupo or somewhere?

You coming up to the FF show in Tauranga at the end of Jan?
