Those of you who know me well, know that it irks me spending 2-3 times what the US retail is on stuff. I'm okay with businesses taking a bit of margin, but it irritates the fuck out of me to get reamed for shit that is now available over the internet.

Most bike prices are pretty reasonable - $12899 USD translates to $20900 here - at the exchange rate, plus shipping and GST, it's not a million miles away.

So, tonight, a mate sent me a link on a car that he's about to buy:

$46,000 USD. Putting it in perspective, his dollar buys more than ours, so it's about the same cost as an XR6 Falcoon in real buying terms.

Back to the point - if you could shop for anything on the internet - what would you get?

My top three are:
1. GSXR1000 for $12,000
2. Dodge Ram (don't tell MadBikeBabe I said this, she's a greenie) 2500 to tow the race trailer
3. A GT500 and a Roush blower.

Its mad what they get in the states for quite reasonable (for them) money. When I was working over there I owned a brand new Chevrolet Tahoe (paid $19 grand US) and on what I was earning it was nothing (one fifth my yearly income). For $25 K here I get an ex demo Mitsubishi Galant and it roughly represents just under half a years income. Where is the justice.

Yes, but you have to pay GST on the import, plus you have to get it converted to RHD unless you have owned and used it in the States for about 3 months.

Speaking from experiance, do not even look at a car less that 25 years old. And unless you plan on keeping it, don't look at anything over.

Less than 20-25 (can't remeber, I'm pissed) it MUST be converted to register. Over 20-25, you can register it but can only sell one every two years.

Bear in mind to register it all lights must be switched to LH dip. Take into account paying GST on the value and shipping costs (allow NZD10K with port fees per 20' container out of LA) your "cheap" car gets pretty fucken expensive pretty quick.

That being said, if you find some thing you want, and can get it to LA, let me know, I'll ship it.

Is that all? Shit, I thought it was 2 years. Do you have to be in the US the whole 3 months? Nip into the US, buy it, park it up at my mate's in LA, then get him to ship it across for me (he's a shipping agent).

Yeah, everything is so stupidly expensive here. It's tough to make a living. We're going to move overseas in the next 12-24 months depending on how unbearable my job becomes (meaning we're moving overseas, just not sure of the timings...).

'Minimum' of 3 months and then you cant sell it here legally for 5 years unless its converted. I did get around dat lol...You can bring in an older car (20yrs plus) and not convert, and you're allowed 1 per year me thinks. I'd like a c5 Vette.

Left-hand steer. You may have some compliance cost issues.
US sales tax. Add 3-6%, unless you buy in Nevada or Montana.
Shipping costs.
Border clearance fees.
And, last but not least, GST.
