My fathers work colleage is planning to do a tour of the North Island later on in the year (he's from Perth). I'm yet to get around to buying the NZ Motorcycle Road Atlas to help hime out and was wondering if people could suggest roads in their local areas that you would recommend to out of towners.
He's going to be on a roadbike, maybe a tourer, so that rules out any adventure/off road routes, but he's keen to see as much as possible on the bike over about two weeks.
Fire away!

The good old Forgotten Highway route from New Plymouth.
NP-Stratford then to Taumaranui via SH43 onto SH4 back to SH3 at 8 mile junction then back to NP.
All around the mountain in the Naki,do it twice, first around the Surf Highway 45 from NP and from Hawera on SH3,then around the mountain via top roads, head up to each road end at Dawson Falls,Stratford Plateau and East Egmont to complete.

Cheers Virago.
Nagash - he's already done SH16 (didn't mention that!) and also Coromandel is a given!
I'll get him to join the site and point him in the direction of that thread that Virago linked to.

Number 12 north of Dargaville. Mainly the Waipoua Forest. Giant Kauri Tane Mahuta is a good stop along the way.
Cross the Hokianga Harbour. Only $3.50 for a bike. You can go to the Cape Reinga but there was 10k of gravel when I was there and it's not an overly good/interesting ride.
Then back down the east coast. Bloody good ride.
I plan on doing this ride again soon but not binning...
