You must be doing a serious number of kms to spend $400 on petrol in a month.
I do about 200 km a week, and spend about $20/week.

id be about 40 bucks per month for a 12k town commute every day, and the odd tag hunting/sunday ride, 400 buck would equate to about 4000km at my usage rate, thats a shitload of riding, maybe youve got a fuel leak? or someones could be siphoning your gas!!

YES, puke gas included - it was all that much tho as my group only did 2.5 sessions and we were all noobs taking easy , so it don't really matter that much.

Month of July just came up as $346.71
MacD
12th September 2009, 23:12
Well let's say you're paying $1.70 per litre for petrol, then $400 equates to around 235 litres of fuel for 4373 km.
That's close to 19 km/l (or 53 mpg), not too bad really.
The issue seems to be the distance not the consumption, but I guess you know this!? ;)

some people use their bike for more than just posing.
the 'busa usually ran out to around 800km a week just on commute and run around duties (commute of 120km round trip). often out to 12-1300kms if i went to whiti for the weekend. at $3/day fixed costs, plus $1.50/litre of fuel for tyres (front and rear), plus fuel/chain etc i easily spent over $400/week/every week.

That's horrendous. That's what my 2.4L 1500kg Accord wagon gets around town and I sure don't baby it...
On the other hand my GSX250F gets about 10km/L around town which is far from stunning, but I think theres actually something broken there given that it won't idle either.
Toto - Are you collecting that info from credit card statements or from saved receipts? I used to save receipts and then drag them out every month or 2 to stick in a spreadsheet but that got tedious. Now I have a notebook and pen in the bike and car that gets the date, current odo reading, #liters put in the tank (always a fill) and fuel used/price. At the other end I also have a log of any times I've checked/altered the tire pressure, oil, coolant, brake fluid, trans fluid, wiper fluid etc. which has so far proved incredibly useful. I'd highly recommend for everyone to try get in the habit of this. It is also a good place to note down oil/filter/brake pad/tire changes as well as what oil/filter was used, tire pressure should be etc. so you don't forget.

yea, looking at my electronic transactions as I don't use cash unless its an emergency.
Notebook and a pen seems like something doable...
Yea a log with all things changed or put on the bike is very useful I found too, but I don't go to the dept of tyre pressure logging...thats way too much detail and data management can become a problem if there is too much data I reckon.
good idea bout the notebook tho :)

Didn't say I did anything with the info :D In terms of tire air pressure I just note the date and that I checked it, nothing more.
Looking at the numbers the same as MacD did, it appears that you're gettin good fuel economy, just travelling a heap. I was paying about $50 a week to keep my car gassed up when I was driving it, now paying about $10 a week to run the bike instead, but that is just inner city commuting.

Just for Katie (who does very little commuting, and mostly country rides)
October 08: 3477km @ $400 ish (couple of $ figures missing) - she was brand new at the beginning of the month
November 08: 2363km @ $251.59
December 08: 2552km @ $260.73
January 09: 7180km @ $676.49 (that was a good month :woohoo:)

May 09: 1775km @ $216.49
June 09: 1481km @ $177.36
July 09: 665km @ $84.05 (too much work and into the shop for service)
August 09: still in the shop
September 09 (so far): 1512km @ $167.88 (rescued from the shop, I have a lot to catch up on)

That's definitely something to consider to be sure.
An extra $100 (or even $200) a week in rent/mortgage doesn't necessarily get you anything much if you're talking about the workplace being in the city proper. My last boss worked in central city but commuted in every day from pukekohe. That's a hell of a lot of time/money invested but he seemed to think that the results were worth it by far, i.e. a couple of acres of grass for his kids, big 2 story modern house plus separate workshops and garages on the property that he paid less for than a family members west auckland small 2 bedroom basic weatherboard house on a 1/4 acre section. A lot of those things that he valued are simply impossible to get without moving well beyond the auckland outskirts.
Also it depends on whether there are kids already in school, whether your wife has a job somewhere nearby etc.

i have every fuel reciept in the 5+ years of owning my 600 and at each full up i record the milage on the bike, i have them all in a nice spreadsheet, which gives tons of figures and what not.
this spreadsheet is also used to calate all expenses incurred with bike, wof, rego, tires, services, etc etc.
I also record the time/kms they were done on the bike. so can keep track on how long tires last, serviceing distance, etc.
Its not hard to keep fuel reciepts when you full up, bang in them in wallet then throw them spreadsheet while at work during the week.

If I do nothibng but commute on the bike the gas bill is about 25/28 bucks per week, depending on weather/road conditions. If it's fine with low traffic volumes I pour it on a bit. Just a bit.
It's 25 k's each way, so 250k's is it for the week and I can just squeeze that out of a tank. In the depths of winter (with the hot-air box keeping things running smoothly) it goes up a bit.
Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. If fuel consumption was an issue I'd be walking. I'd be leaving home before I went to bed, but that's not the issue.
Who cares????
