My better half has a penchant for op-shops, in particular the hospice shop here in New Plymouth. Over the last couple of years we've managed to pick up a 3 month old, unused, wall oven and hob for $60, a pair of brand-new, un-worn ladies motorcycle boots for her ($10), and yesterday, a barely-out-of-the-box dri-rider suit for just $10.

These places have some of the most amazing bargains, and always well worth a look, but more importantly, especially op-shops like the Hospice shop, the proceeds go to a really worthwhile cause. My sister-in-law was cared for by the New Plymouth hospice when she was dying of cancer a couple of years back, as was the wife of one of my co-workers fairly recently.

Give these guys a bit of support when you can. They do a fantastic job in the community, and you never know what gems you'll find tucked away in the back of those stores.

my south island trips are done for two reasons: the rally at the end, and the op shops on the way there and back! LOL. i usually end up posting home at least 7 of the largest sized post boxes cos i run out of room on the bike.
hospice are pretty good, but my local ones have a habit of trying to sell broken toys. like, cant be repaired broken [a plastic shopping trolley with a snapped off wheel. a doll that pedals with snapped off feet and pedals etc]
we do get some darn good bargins though, but not motor bike related ones though. good score on the suit and boots!

i would love to put together a database of op shops and their addresses. ive got savemart covered and only need to visit the shops north of rotorua to complete the list, but sally ann, hospice, city mission etc shops are hard to find and i usually stumble on them by pure luck.
