Step 1....Sort out in your own mind what kind of bike you want?
Step 2...Combine that thought with how much you can/want to spend.
Step 3...Look through Motorcycle Trader/Trademe and get an idea of market price.
Step 4...Get all your riding gear sorted, and then you ready to get serious.
Step 5...If you can afford to buy new? buy new.
Step 6...Test ride a few bikes before you decide, you may not actually like what you first thought was the bike for you.
Step 7...When 1-6 is complete...time to purchase...:niceone:

What are you going to do if you don't buy a NINJA 250R?

There's no need to shout btw.

I reckon Maha just about sums it up in all 6 ideas.
Your the only 1 who is going to know which bike at what price suits you best as what maybe suitable and affordable for 1 isn't necessarily suitable for another.
Im sure in time you will get exactly what you want for the price you want to pay and then its all a matter of enjoying your purchase and having many enjoyable hours Riding whatever it is you end up buying.
Visiting a bike shop and actually seeing different makes and models of bikes and getting the feel of them will be your best option.
Then once you have picked a bike that you want to buy then its a matter of shopping around for the best price.
Goodluck.

Test riding is a waste of time if you are totally new to motorcycles. Sit on the bike and make sure it fits but don't scare yourself riding around in traffic. You have no frame of reference to evaluate the bike and even if you did all your attention will be devoted to riding safely and you will not have much left to evaluate the bike.

The ninja 250R is good, as long as it fits you.

Welcome, welcome. The first thing to remember about learning to ride is the faster the bike the easier it is. You'll need a turboed 2-stroke ex-racing 250cc. That'll make you learn quick.

Of course, if you really wanted to ride well and survive until next x-mas you'd totally ignore the above advice. And if you ignored that, you would ignore all the other idiots that would suggest you do just that.

Totally agree with everything that has been said above about 'fitting' the bike. It may look the best, but if you feel uncomfortable on it, you'll ride like shit AND never want to ride it.

And a login name after a bike BEFORE you get the bike tells me you have already made up you're mind what your gonna get ;)

Heaps of things with the Search if you know what to search for too.

Have fun riding :niceone:

Thanks for all the advices ppl!
I was thinking of getting a NINJA 250R, but it's a lil bit off my budget....
So I thought I might as well get a Honda Hornet, but my mate said that
Hondas are for gay ppl....
So it's quite hard for me to pick a bike that is under $6,000, low Ks, looks good as well as performance.....
Any suggestions??

Just because your mate is a closet homo does not mean that you will be if you get a Honda. Hornet over a Bandit anyday.

Ha ha ha, Honda's are for Fags. It's true. :P

HOWEVER - If you get yourself a NSR 250R (mc21's not bad) and survive the first 6 months you'll be the coolest fag on the block.

All the new fully faired 250's are a waste of cash. Get a older, more powerful bike that's been binned a few times. You'll save money as resell value won't plummet like a new bike and they're generally more fun anyway.

At the end of the day you'll fall in love with whatever you buy, however you'll also upgrade faster than you can say Jimminy Cricket when your full comes around - so think about buying something that'll sell on for about the same you picked it up for.

Meh. I've been pootling around on my 250 Hornet for two years and have had full for ages. I don't get the 'must upgrade the second I have my full' thing. (and yes, I have ridden lots of bigger bikes).

If you can't afford a Ninja, you could consider a GN250.

Mini B-King? Erm, what's that?

I got pack raped by bills yesterday (delaying me by a fortnight in copping) so if you swoop in on a good deal on a black ninja I'll probably give a pistol a blowjob.

He probably confusing Honda bikes with Honda cars, most Honda boys "make" them gay.
Lowering em and putting sounds and baked bean cans for exhausts shows your gayness!
with that said...

Honda as a bike maker is probably among the best in the world
I'm a kawa owner and I convert the Honda's all the time, so so pretty and so so fast.. don't knock em til you how down good they are.
I almost bought a 86 Honda CBR but i was put off by the rear drum, kick myself sometimes for passing up the 45HP edition 4 cylinder... oh well

And why the hell you gotta buy a brand new Ninja? Try and old one, seriously, they are excellent. Plus they will make you respect them when your learning. I worry about guys buying the new one, and falling off.... not cool...

Bits and pieces for the old one is easier to come by too.
