I do not know the way beyond the leader valley, nor the best route, perhaps some suggestions?
it was a toss up between this and going to the salmon farms.

so you want to go up to Kaikora via the inland route,
Ambeley, waipara, rothereham, Mt lyford , Kaikora. then home via the coast?,
Or up the coast, then back via the inland Mt Lyford route, then across to Parnasses via the Leader road, then back to ChCh.
Or ChCh Parnassas, inland to MtLyford, Kaikora via the inland road, return to ChCh via the coast
Any combination of the above can be worked out.
Any which way sounds good to me, so I could be a starter for that Dave

Yeah did leader valley and south of waiau and the only place requring more care was in the leader valley with some grit. Otherwise the inland route is pretty worth it.
Have a goodun

Did the inland route last Sunday. Road was all good.
Did it twice over the last few weeks.
There is some grit (always is) and some road works (has been for the last few years after the floods and slips), but is ridable a safe.
Just do not go flat tack in to blind corners and you will be fine.
If wet be careful of some clay on the roads and small very short parts that a dirt (clay).
These could be repaired and be tar sealed by now.

I did think about going and got up early to finish what I started the night before.
But ran out of time and the bike was in bits, so though I would just plod along and finish what I had started.
If I had known that you would have been getting back so late I would have shot up the road to meet you on the way back.
Both SDU and were going to go, but as it was cold we thought there was no point risking it as it was late-ish and would just pass you on the road.
We were hoping to meet you at the Greta.
Glad you you guys had a good ride.
