Hi

Qman here, joined a while back, thought I should start being active, rode bikes a lot BM ( before marriage ) had to sell the bike as part of the wedding vows. Never bother to get my licence either. ( didnt seam to be an issue in the naki back then, no one had one

So now that im "free" I am looking to get back in the saddle, and get my licence this time.

Looking at a VFR 800, heard great things about them, abet from Honda riders of course.

The licence is a great start to your new adventures, but I'm not certain that an L-Plate will look the part on the VFR800?? :msn-wink: I took a 2k VFR800 for a ride last month and was quite impressed, they are a nice ride with plenty of get-up-and-go! Post us some photos if/when you buy.

In my weekly travels from South Auckland ( Hamilton ) into the city, over the years I have noticed a lot of bikes running between the lanes on the motorway.

Observation I have never seen any biker pulled over for doing this until this last week when I have observed 4 bikes been chassed down and stopped. It seams the bmw boys are focusing on this for some reason

Question
Is this activity actually illegal and if so, generally what is the fine, or is it just a stern talking and finger waving :angry2:

Hi Qman. Welcome to KB. This subject has been discussed ad nauseum on this site. Use the Search function you'll find more thread than you can point a stick at.

Technically, it's legal and illegal, depending on officer discretion.

It could be interpreted as illegal overtaking. Most of the time it's okay, but if you look like you are pushing your luck, it'll probably be expensive.

I'm an incorrigible lanesplitter. But I've also had one reasonably serious and quite expensive crash (last June) as a result of my lanesplitting.

Like anything in life it's a risk. But life's like that isn't it?

Sorry to hear about your marriage breakup. Going back to biking after a relationship bustup is not uncommon - it's a pity some of us had to give it up because our partners insisted on it. My ex did. And she has done a lot of other stuff that really makes my life difficult. However my wife is incredibly supportive of my need to ride. And I don't abuse that support or trust (much). I just wish I could support her in what she does as much as she does me.

I hope you enjoy getting back to bikes. This site is good for encouragement in that way. Just be careful you don't get sucked in too deep... that way lies trouble, as a number of us (me included) have found out - everything in moderation is the key...

Congratulations on your choice of bike ... the VFR is an excellent bike - perhaps the finest all-rounder money can buy. You will definitely enjoy it.

i'm guessing that you're over 25? i suggest u use the L plate... u can apply for a full liscense in two months right after u passed ur learners anyway but of course u'll need to get restricted before getting ur full.

If u get caught driving with learners liscense and not having an L-plate on ur bike u'll get a $400 fine, its just not worth it.

Ok, what's the deal with that? I saw some training school advertising this in the BSE last week. Have you actually checked it out?

yes

If you are over 25 and have a "clean" driving record, you can apply for the fast track. it costs more, here in HN its about $250 for each of the two 10 hour courses ( half classroom/ half practice ), but that also includes the tests. Any of the motorcycle school's should be able to give you details. You can also apply for compensation to ride greater than 250cc during this process.
