Three times in as many weeks my FXR150 engine has stopped, All times I have been riding for 10-15 mins and all were at speed 60-100ks. The engine looses power for a few seconds and then dies all together, The bike can be started sometimes while costing and allways with in a few mins of being stationary. The last time it happened I noticed a strong smell of whats I assume was fuel. But it could have also have been post rush hour motorway.

Does anyone have any ideas? or places to start looking?

Mate had a similar problem many years ago on a Z1300. In his case the valve clearances had been set way to tight by the local bike shop.

My guess is that it would be electrical related. Somthing getting hot and breaking down, once everything cools off again it all good to go.

I would start at the battery and check the charge, but a more likely suspect would be that the coil has shit itself.

It really could be anything, you need to narrow it down to fuel or spark for sure.

A mentioned above it could also be neither.

It burbles a bit before it stops?

Make it stop by riding up and down your street, it may piss the neigbours off but its less of a walk/push from home. carry a spare plug on you and as soon as it stops pull over and pull the plug lead off, hold the plug to the metal head and crank the bike over, if you see a spark start by cleaning out your carb, fuel filters, petcock and cheacking tank breather. If you don't see spark look at electrical stuff, starting with a new sparkplug.

My guess is a fuel filter is inserted & is creasing the fuel line & can't cope with the high speed flow for long before the float bowl runs out. Or the tank breather is blocked, (can happen if someone sealants the tank).

When it stops remove the fuel cap and see if its got a vacume. Tank vent blocked or fuel cap(if the vent is in it) just like F5 Dave said
I had the same problem on a SRX400, I run it with the cap loose and it was fine, just blew it out with a dust gun and all fixed.
I hope its that easy for you and not a CDI or something tricky and a pain to find

I found there is a plugin/box at the back right under the fairing.

The plugin can wriggle lose and the bike dies - lights still work I think the spark plug can die.

Be good idea to check if that could the cause.

Didn't some of these have problems with the wiring loom where is runs around the steering head causing these symptoms

well if people would post if they found a solution to their problem rather than just leaving the thread we might one day find out the answers to many of these dredged-thread questions;)
