Probably cop a bit of grief for this but:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/oddstuff/2871558/Most-popular-baby-name-in-London-Mohammed

Mohammed is the most common name for baby boys born in London and three other English regions, official Government figures have shown.

The Islamic name overtook traditional choices like Jack, Thomas and Daniel to become the number one name in the West Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber/North West as well as in the capital, in 2008.

The figures emerged in a detailed regional breakdown of figures published last week by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Britain's Daily Telelgraph reported.

When various spellings of the Islamic prophet are added together - including Muhammad, Mohammad, Mohamed and Muhammed - the name is now more than twice as popular in London as the capital's second-ranked boys name, Daniel.

There were 1828 baby boys given the name Mohammed, including varients, in 2008, compared with only 844 who were called Daniel.

London is not the first European capital to see Mohammed become the number one name for baby boys. In Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Oslo the name has already gained the top slot.

Experts believe that internationally around 15 million people are called Mohammed, making it the most popular male name in the world.

Murtaza Shibli of the Muslim Council of Britain said he was not surprised to find Mohammed had become the most popular boys name in parts of the country.

"People choose it because of their love of the prophet Mohammed, and they believe the name will bring happiness and abundance," he said.

"Also because of its meaning - the praised one. Also there is a belief that if you do name your children Mohammed they will follow the good example of the prophet.

"There are so many spellings because it is an Arabic name and there are different ways of translating it into English."

Say hello to the islamification of the UK. Militant types over there too.

we live in a Global community and the world is getting smaller and smaller. In the future there will be no borders and only one race.... the human race. You can either fight it, or accept it.

As for islam......it is a very narrow minded religion. Followers expect others to bend over backwards to accomodate their needs but do not give the same courtesy back. Though I have met a few very friendly and extremely nice muslims, I am loath to say it is a religion I am not too fond of.

Mind you the Qu'ran has been so misquoted, killing is wrong in any religion and to do so is to show you know nothing of the faith in which you follow.

“…if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.” [Al-Qur’an 5:32]

It's a fairly stupid article. Mohammed may be the most popular name, but that doesn't mean that islam nor arabs are taking over London.

Just because that name is popular, that does not mean that they're the majority. For example, in the United States, Protestants make up the greatest proportion of the Christian population, yet Catholics are the biggest denomination (due to how many protestant churches there are).

Back in school, how many double ups of names can you recall in your classes? In all my time there were only two classes I can recall which had two people with the same name, two Andrews and two Duncans.

Mohammed may the single most popular name, but islamic/arabic names are still a minority.

Why in five years? The classroom's already like a league of nations anyway (much more so here than back in the UK). It's no bad thing for Kiwi kids to meet and learn with lots of kids from overseas.

My old man often yaps on about the government letting in the windies in the 50's, but that's the price of progress... Personally i couldn't give a flyer who lives where, what religion (there are NO PURE religions in my eyes and never have been) people are, colour, gender bias etc... In the words of Agent Smith, "it's inevitable" How m,any people in China? How many in India etc... they're bound to be cross populating somewhere along the lines and the quicker we all get on with it, the better off the world will be... i'll put the pipe down now as i'm starting to believe things that i shouldn't... Eutopia ha ha ha !!!!! it'll never happen

That would depend entirely on what they're being taught.

The same things they'd be being taught if the overseas kids weren't there. I've a Y12 class with kids from Italy, Germany, China, Japan, the UK etc. etc. etc. The list goes on. Can't say that the kids are in a hurry to learn all about each other but I still see it as a positive.

Just like if you aren't Jewish you're Gentile, not Christian you're a Heathen.

No world spanning religion is above radical militaristic expansion. It's just that of the two religions I mentioned, one stopped being arse hats after Masada, and the other after the 4th crusade, though the latter did create 300 years of political ruckus that almost stymied the Renaissance and the concepts that give Westerners their limited personal freedoms today.

All religion sucks.

agree

Daniel may be second most popular, chosen for perhaps 4% of non muslim boys born in London.

Muhummad (and it's various spellings) on the other hand, is used to name upwards of 60% of all muslim boys born in London.

Do the math and it's hardly a takeover... lies, damn lies, and statistics.

I suppose all the real Poms have emigrated.

Crikey in our great city of Porirua we even have guys by the name of Jim these days with pale skin, not just brown fellahs called Hemi.

When I was in London in January the laugh was trying to get a meal, none of the waitresses spoke English, but it didn't matter they were all spunky looking hotties from eastern Europe, not waiters called Muhammed. I'm going back next week just to see if they are still there lol :2thumbsup.

why are people so afraid???? your culture is not about to be wiped off the face of the earth.... neither is your race. Change happens over time and won't even be noticed. When you see an interacial couple.... for example, a chinese wife and a european husband with a small child living here in NZ. Do you feel sorry for that child?

Been to Willesden or Halesden lately?

Shit, doesnt even have to be lately, I lived there for ages, and its always been a melting pot, but then all big cities are. Its just the UK's immigration laws are soft and let in nearly anybody who can use one of many angles to gain residency.

Loads of areas have had racial violence and its getting worse. Could explain why the British National Party has more support than ever. Maybe their previous Govt's shouldnt have gone sooo politically correct on other races and over-equal opportunity. Every man and his dog and extended family are moving there, as the standard of living and job opportunities are far better than where they came from.

On the positive side, there's a million different takeaway food outlets to choose from, and the corner stores are open all night and have a nice atmosphere as they are family run. Plenty of fruit and veg shops too.

having been back to UK three times this year is is amazing how quickly it has changed in 2 yrs since we left. whether it is racial influence or not the country seems in a mess and without clear direction. NZ seems to know where it is going and pretty confident as a nation. We enjoy that positive approach to life

Willesden Green has a massive tower outside the tube now, in the 6months i was away for, it went from a small structure to this huge huge tower, looked like they put plenty of cash into it.

As for the food, yes great choice, but after seeing how they got from the truck to the shop, i wouldnt be rusing in...though the best memory is on the way home after a few beers, biting into some chicken and finding it completely frozen on the inside! Some pissed up aussie come over then picked it up and ate it!!

Are cultures worth saving or should we just put everyone into a great big melting pot and turn out coffee coloured people by the score?
