View Full Version : Ponsonby Road - now 40km/h

Drove past the K' road end of Ponsonby road this morning on the way to work. There's a large temporary illuminated sign announcing " Ponsonby Road is now 40km/h". Sure enough, the permanent speed limits on the posts have been changed to 40.
When was this decided, why and by whom? Admittedly, traffic down Ponsonby Road crawls at peak times, but when it's free flowing this is going to cause traffic to move unnecessarily slowly. A cynical person would say it also provides the opportunity for traffic police to ping drivers for driving at 'normal' suburban speeds such as 50 to 55 km/h.

Ponsonby road is farking dodgy.
It was only implemented this week.
I generally support it, but only because the retards who want in and out of parks and do window shopping have made it a dangerous place for others. Dont get me started on the suicidal pedestrians who just blast right out onto the crossing thinking the white lines will protect them.
It's not a sensible road to be doing 60 down...

There are several ways to avoid Ponsonby Road so whats the problem?

Simple.
It's easier to slow motorists down than teach latte fags how to use a crossing.

The thin end of the wedge perhaps - and why stop at 40 when we can have 30 or 20?
Actually the thin end started in Hazard.
Try finding a 100k road in rural Hazard, they are slowly but surely getting the speed limits down through the whole of Hazard.

On the first day it started there were 6 cops out with speed traps.
Nice to know that they've solved all the other crimes and can now focus solely on enforcing residential speed limits.
Perhaps they just haven't got around to telling me they've found the guy that stole my car.....
Apparently there was public consultation. They probably asked the business association who would be completely in favor of it.

Bring on the horse and carts....we are almost there!
Cars and bikes get faster and safer and the speed limit gets lower and lower.

Cars and bkes may be getting "faster and safer" but your average human is just as dumb as ever.

There have been a couple of pedestrian fatalities on Ponsonby Road in the last couple of years.
The reduced speed limit is intended to decrease the risk to pedestrians.

I heard the justification was that there were a bizzilion (this is the actual number) of crashes on Ponsonby Road.
And that the average speed through there at rush hour was 38km/hr so it wouldnt make too much difference.

Inconvenient but understandable.
You want numerous examples of wholesale human stupidity in locomotion? Ponsonby Road is the place. But then Hearn Bay road is actually worse. Parnell's a cracker too.
What would be sensible is variable speed limits. Like they have at skools. Slow it down business and peak. Free it up after hours. Works in Sydney and Melbourne.

I drive down that road often and 40k makes sense. Oddly in free flowing times there are still cars going sub 50 pootling along.
They should do that down Broadway to. The phasing of the lights means you don't get through there quickly.
Do Kingsland shops and Mt Eden shops.
Parnell seems okay. But what the hell do that as well.
What I have noticed that seems universal is that "Smart" cars always seem to have "Dumb" drivers. It seems they drive around in their own mental bubble. They should have never let them out of Noddy town I reckon.

Parnell is a cracker today. There was this chick earlier who had one of the nicest rear ends ever seen in these here parts... :buggerd:

You're keen to talk about "going down" and Ponsonby Road in the same sentence...

I usually shoot down there pretty quickly. There are cars pulling in and out all over the place and it is best just to keep out of the way.
I am not sure that a 40Kph limit will help the chaos.
Hopefully it will.
