My car is pretty much sold now, be glad to see her go, but also sad as it is a good car. I dont need a 7 seater now aye. So am now looking round at bike deals...I have 2 options available to me...As I am "still" on a learner(got learner in 87...lol), I can get a 250 and stay legal until I go for restricted/full soon, or I can get what i want (maybe a GSX750 or 1100)and be careful until I get my full...so choices aye...be a sensible law abiding citizen (why start now?) or be a law breaker and have fun doing it...

Buy a CBR250. You unlikely to lose money on one if you don't crash it and that way you can still stay legal. Insurance companies won't pay out if you crash anything bigger than 250cc.

How much actual riding time have you had?
If it isn't much I'd go for the 250. If you believe the statistics, then moving directly to a 600cc or above bike with little experience will greatly increase your chance of having a serious accident.
If you believe the statistics, and you've got some experience but have had a break from riding, then moving directly to a 600cc or above bike will greatly increase your chance of having a serious accident as well.
Actually, might just be a good idea to get a 250, at least for a little while, and then consider changing once you feel confident in your skills. 250cc bikes tend to hold their value well.

Entirely up to you.
Don't go bitching about $400 fines because you got stopped at a breath testing checkpoint of a Christmas Eve.
We'll just laugh. In a Nelson Munce manner.

I have had a shit load of riding experience over the last 22 years...just too lazy to upgrade my licence....everything from sportsters to katanas all the way down to AX100's

250's can be a bit of fun to throw around for a while but how long do you have to hold out for real bike?
good to be legal,:innocent: one less thing to worry about but if you scream round doing a tonne doesn't matter what size bike you've got you'll still get shafted by mister plodd!:devil2:

Do yourself favour and do it the right way.
A 250cc runaround will get you what you need and then you will get your money back when you sell it to buy a biger bike.

Get a 250cc....It just isnt worth it if you crash into a 100k BMW as no insurance will insure you. You will get just as much fun on a 250cc especially on twisties.

Another vote here for doing the 250 thing properly. If you can wait 22 years you can wait another 9 months, and 250s don't depreciate much.
Just don't get a GN or something stupid liket that. 250 stroker like an RGV or an NSR should keep your interest I reckon... :) Then when you get your full you can take the lights and mirrors off and go racing!

I have agreed to buy the 04 GSX 250...not the fastest 250 around but will do me for a bit, and at only 7000 k on the clock is almost new

Looks pretty good, best of luck to you on your riding.
My advice:
Pull your finger out of your arse and hurry up with getting your full license. Even if you happily ride that 250 for a couple of years, it is always nice to have the option of buying whatever you like and we don't need another thread on the forums from someone bitching about getting done for breaching license conditions.

Go for the 250 if you're concerned about insurance etc, but saying that I think Kiwibike cover you (with a higher excess of course) if you ride out of your licence conditions, but don't quote me on that, best you ring and find out.
If you don't give a fuck about insurance then go for a bigger bike.

Was going to say, don't spend shitlaods on a 250 if looking to upsize. And also going to say maybe a DR,XR,KLR250 trail bike, can be cheaper and ok till full completed, then either keep it for off road fun.

hmmm I would say staying legal is the smart thing to do. Just in case you wondered yes the cops do pull learners over if you fail to display the L sign or riding a > 250cc. Personally I have known 2 people that has been fined, and they aren't even speeding or doing anything stupid that could have attracted the cops.
If you get a thou, don't use L plate, and go over 70kph on the motorway, that will be $400 x 3 = $1200, and you got no insurance as well...
If you get ur restricted soon, and do the defensive driving course, it's only 3 months...not that long really...

Bloody car sale flopped...so still playing waiting game....
Test rode 2 GSX1100s tonight...one an 86 and one a 96....I have always liked older bikes and really felt comfy on the 86....though the 96 had a much smoother ride, but too common....I like things a little bit different...Am going to book my restricted this week
Does anyone have comments on CBR1000s???
