Can someone explain to me the desire to perch on the fences atop the Rimutaka summit? I am curious and want to understand the motives behind the scrutineering of bikes riding around that bend.

Because.

There's.

Nowhere.

Else.

To.

Sit.

But wtf would you want to hang around at the top for anyway?

I don't know. I've not figured that one out.

People used to claim it was for the toilets and the cafe, but you could get a permanent marker, draw a cross on a pie in the pie warmer and it would be there all summer.

There was more dung around the back of the loos than ever went into it too.

It's such a long ride they have to stop for a rest/smoke break...

You sit there, and watch peoples lines and technique coming up the Hutt side.

The main reason I stop up there is to talk shit with other like minded people & to catch up with people you have not seen in a while, like today I bumped into Roadracingoldfart up there, who I have not seen up there for probably twenty years

It does worry me a little when there are some who just park there all day

Time for a rant,I am still pissed off at the deletion of two passing lanes & fucking double yellow lines nearly all the way over the hill!!!!

Pick your spot. At the right time, right wind and the fence vibrates..just so, so, so .....Oh, time to change my undies

Stop there and ask them.

It is part of the right of passage. To be a real biker.

The question should not be why? It should be why not?

You must travel to this special place. Sit on the fence until it comes to you.

That's "rite", and it's only a rite of passage for people who think a 60 km round trip is a long way.

Always 4 riders keep lookout while the plants are watered.
Only required during hot weather.

There's more composting than watering going on up there lately.

The pie warmer was there all year round, not just summer.

I hadn't noticed the toilets missing yesterday when I went.

If the toilets were missing ... where did you go ... :innocent:

If you don't stop at the top ... does that mean you are over the hill ????

Fair point, but 3 months is longer than even an Indian Dairy owner would feel happy with.

Hell Barry , it was only 17 years lol.
I enjoyed the ride and as i dont get to the bike shops much its like looking into a window of one. Did you know they have a whole bunch of new bikes on the road now ??? i saw a GSXR 1000 , wow !!!
I also saw a CB900FB with 750 sidecovers lol.
I wonder why the fence is the place to sit as well though , why have we as m/b riders not asked for a bench seat so we can sit on it and immitate the ride up .? The B/S and friendlyness of the riders that gather there is just like stepping back in time and thats got to show we move with the times <_<

PS; i couldnt get over how many guys were from Upper Hutt :shit:

Paul.

The top of the takas is an excellent place to watch and listen as the invading hordes of wellypeople descend into the depths of the Rapa, and wonder if there are any tables left at the 'fish' in Martinborough by the time I get there.
