View Full Version : What has happened to the wires track?

I went for a ride up the wires yesterday and my god it looks like a GNCC has been through there! The trail is completely rooted, full of ruts. Ive been riding there for almost twenty years and this is the worst I have ever seen it.
It looks like people have been riding (pushing) up the gut buster which has always been considered naughty as it wrecks the trail. :bash:
Its time for some restorative justice guys, it needs a lot of work to get this area back into a reasonable condition. Track clearing, bog draining, and rut filling. The guys who used to do a lot of this have now got a bit older and are not so keen so its up to the latest batch of riders to do it.
So when are WE going up there with shovels, picks and loppers to sort out the mess? This needs to be done before my Mum goes down there for her Christmas ride and spends twenty hour in there!! :eek5:

Ye count me in, Seems to be the first 200-300m from the wires side that needs most attention also not helping that quads are trying to get up the gut buster and someone has been up with a chainsaw cutting new tracks through. 4x4 are cutting new roads through on the wires too.

are 4x4;'s and quads meant to be inthere?
if not concrete and steel do a good job of keeping wide vehicles out

Yea for sure I'll help.. those ruts at the start of gutbuster are deep as
When to do it tho?

If its that bad, wouldn't you need a bulldozer? Shovels would be pretty useless???

Shovels and pic's would do the job. May as well take some pruning saw's(hand saws) and tidy up some of the over hanging stuff..Enough hands will make reasonabley easy work... Everyone who uses it should really chip in otherwise it may get to the point where doc pull the pin

Yes thats my real worry. It will be almost impossible to get a digger in there so its a muscle job. It would be great to do some pruning too. I we should try and agree on a date in early November. It should be dry enough then so that you can stand upright but not too dry.

And you can offer some training on the day! LOL This is how you ride with a shovel.... LOL
You will need someone with a quad to get tools about though.

Swt as, put a date up and we'll all come down and get it sorted. If everyone who's been going down has a bit of notice plenty should turn up. Last time I was there, every man and his dog was there, quads (one missing a wheel lol), 4x4's you name it.

I'll be in for a working bee.
Maybe post on NZ 4x4 assoc website also? I saw they had a couple of maintenance day events posted on their website for the Maratoto/wires area earlier this year.

I would be keen to come down and help too.
I've done a bit of looking at the trail on ride reports and I think I may not even take my bike with me. It looks and sounds very hard!!
Is this track just open to anyone who thinks they're good enough to make it?

A digger would be great but the access is probably impossible. Thankyou for the offer though! How does Labour day, 26th October sound? Seems fitting to have a days manual labour on labour day??

Tell Pricey to stay under ground in the mines where he belongs that way he doesn't have to shovel shite for the muppets.
