Parking in Wellington CBD

Hi,

Anybody knows any covered parkings in Wellington CBD? I know that in Auckland there are special places in public parkings to be used by motorcycles for free.
Is there such thing in Wellington?

The main reason is of course, the wind :)

Sorrin, there is currently a massive discourse on just this subject (parking in CBD) in the Biker News forum. You may wish to check it out.

I personally wouldn't warn you off any of the bike shops in the region, they're all pretty on to it. For riding gear though, you may also want to check out Leather Direct in Cuba Mall.

I work on Jervois Quay but I don't mind walking for 5 minutes, that would be the area between Panama Street - Boulcott St - Cuba St.

Can somebody tell me where someone without a license can learn how to ride a bike? A 50km radius of Wellington would be great.
It has to be a non public road because otherwise it will be illegal.

I tried searching but I found only references to instructors that teach how to ride.

I practiced recently (in a car) on the Harcourt Werry Drive side of Fraser Park. There's a car parking area there. Always empty if there are no sports events on.

century city car park building on tory st, there all good for bikes in there and just cruze in and out plently of space to do so, theres a few bikes there.

Hi Sorin,

If all your interested in is the basics to get you going and you want someone to give you a few pointers, just speak out. There are a number of people on here that live local to you who would quite happily give an hour of their time to help a newbie. (I'm presuming you are a newbie based on the questions asked).

There is also the mentor scheme ran on here so again, just put your hand up.

Although riding instructors such as Andrew and Lynne Templeton (Roadsafe) may seem 'expensive', believe me, they are well worth it. They will ensure that you do not start out with any bad habits from day one.
DIY learning may appear to be a cheaper option but you have to look at the total cost. ie how much do you value life? Is a few dollars saved worth the risk. IMHO, get some professional training. You won't regret it.

Thanks a lot for the answer. I am indeed a very newbie however, my wife wants to see if she will also like it as much as I do and she wants to see if she can handle and learn how to start and how to stop the bike.

If she decides to get the license she will definitely take a professional training. I did it with Nick Sargent and I was very pleased (however, I don't have a comparison).
What I enjoyed was the fact that he has only 2 students at a time and he can keep an eye on you while you learn.

Saying that, nobody told me if it's legal or not to learn to ride on a parking lot (dress smart for example).

PS: I used to use the hawkeye nickname for more than a decade, I have the full box set (11 seasons) at home, the best TV series ever ;)
