Surely there must be a few of you guy's out there that race but have bung knees....

Im wondering if anyone can offer any advice re strapping or knee braces that you can buy at the chemist that might help support and enable me to bend my knee properly so that I can race this weekend...

Any and all advice will be helpful!!

Not sure what is wrong with my knee but it got alot better last week but has been swollen and sore since Monday again. Pain is easy to ignore when you're racing but I cant actually bend my knee to rest it on the footpeg atm. Might come right by the weekend, who knows!

Are you taking any anti-inflamatory's? If not get down the docs and get some, will help with the swelling and then your knee will bend like you were 16 again :msn-wink:

best cure for knee problems after I shattered both my knee caps and tore ligaments in both legs in an accident, was to build muscle to support the knee. I have been slack in maintaining this muscle but it makes a huge difference to the pain levels esp in changing weather conditions.

Hey them Codine wont bring the swelling down Hells, all they'll do is make ya shit stick !!
Go get some Neurophen (not neurophen plus) RED GELL caps from new world and the shit might start flowing again by sat !!!!
Not as good as codine for the pain but the reason the swelling aint gone down, is cause the Quack ya call yr doctor is treating the symptom not the cause ! In other words you aint feeling the pain and walking on the leg/legs !
Ice = Ice Compresion Elevation !
Ya got a chair at work ? Get another one to sit ya leg on !
Ya got a freezer at work somewhere ? Take 2 packs of frozen peas to work next two days ! Alternate them using a towel to wrap them in and sit them on ya knees ALL DAY !
Stay off ya feet !
Ya just might race on saturday yet lol
Ya aint got a strong gut so dont want to take my pills !!!
Next time ya see ya doc, ask for a referal to a specialist ! Say your in for an arthroscopy !

 dont get me started on the publice health system.... I went to the ortho clinic last week, 2 weeks after some fucker hit me while I was waiting for the lights on the way too work. They had originally done an xray which revealed no breaks but a huge amount of swelling... Last week the house surgeon told me that he was going to arrange an MRI and then went away to the ortho surgeon who decided that I should just start using it as much as possible. This is even after I said that I had to take a mountain of pain relief to do so. Apparently its quite OK to develop a drug addiction whilst waiting for treatment...

Anyway, long story snipped... I go back to see him next week where I will be demanding an MRI or ultrasound. I will be espcially pissed if I cant race this weekend so he might just take me seriously... *tui*

For now I just want to fucken race!! :crybaby:

Yeah if your still water on the knee swollen after 6 weeks ya might be fucked for this weekend, but give the ICE method a go and get the leg/legs up !
Go back to the doc tommorrow and tell him ya cant walk for the next two days (acc) so ya can get them up as high as ya can !!! Koba might like to help here !!!

Well I did spend the first week pretty much laid up with a leg the size of fat mans leg doing the whole RICE thing and it got alot better. Then I went to see specialist, funny thing is, is that if I follow his advice my leg gets really bad but if I just rest it and keep it up etc it gets heaps better....

Hey Hels, this doesn't sound so good.

My story is: 18 months ago I was told I had arthritis and my knee was buggered. It was always swolen and I couldn't walk for more than an hour tops.

Like you, I couldn't straighten it either. Ice six times a day to help with the swelling was the start, but all I could do for a prolongued period was to cycle (without fully strightening my knee). Anyway, to cut a long story short I got a job as a Postie, which meant I had to cycle around 20km every day. It took about 4 months to start developing serious muscle but slowly and surely I got stronger and stronger. I am now a motorcycle Postie and ride a push bike when they are short.

Within the last 4 months, I have been able to fully extend my bad leg so that it raises off the floor. I can walk a 4 hour round of golf (the guys infront were slow). I am quite amazed (though i still can't play the piano). 90% of the clicking and cracking has gone too. I take a spoon of fish oil every morning and those Glucosomine Chrondroitin horse sized tablets.

Start working on getting better. Unfortuately no one else gives a fark!

RICE .... Thats the word lol

Well i know what i'd be doing !!!

I also know i wouldn't try building muscle right now either ! Depends on what damage the MIR scan ends up telling ya have as to which excercise ya need to compensate !!!

Unfortunately this is what I am most scared off... I totally fucked this knee 5 or so years ago when I wrote off my first bike and it has been temperamental ever since... :(

Though is this was to be the case then acupuncture might help me. I cant keep downing voltaren and codeine forever!

Acupuncture is good for pain relief, but it won't fix anything.

Find out what is really wrong and then go from there. It might be as simple as a flush out to make it like new.

Good luck.

What about getting on a cycle machine, if at all possible?

Ive done my left knee in years ago, and fell off 7 weeks ago, and busted up my wirst, as well as hitting my knee in the process. Couldnt put any weight on it, and the doc thought just deep bursing. Within the week I was at the gym on the cycle machone and has helped alot. Its store sore if I get hit on the right/wrong angle, and thats 7 weeks ago, so who knows.

I had been on the cycle machine at the gym trying to keep it moving... I usually do about 40 mins of high intensity cardio 5x a week but was doing 20 mins on the lowest level in 5 min blocks, stretching in between. Unfortunately I think that is what has been aggrevating it... :(

Can you get hold of 2"lucoplast strapping tape, tape down the knee and around, like the way sports people do,maybe at a gym you can pick a trainers brain to show best way to strap it how you need. Can you use nurofen gel or similar anti-swelling gel to use as well as pain killers.

I have a knee injury and if I catch it on the wrong angle the damn thing drops me.

I wore a stretchy neoprene (wetsuit type material) brace for months, and I was damn careful not to provoke it, and after a couple of years it came right. The brace felt nice and warm and this helped as well.

I dunno what type of knee injury you have, but my guess is you are going to have to keep it braced and be really careful on it 24/7 and hope like hell it comes right over time.

oh chickie..... you poor thing.. i've had a few knee injuries over the years and it sucks when they just niggle.... try and get it sorted.... if its too sore to bend to race... will it really hurt to miss this round? I only say that because if you aggravate it in some way it will really not like you in the healing process later.
Get some glucosamine and chondroiton tablets, blackmores do a good one "high potency" i think its 750mg of glucosamine and 250mg Chondrioton... i swear by it for joints and bones... get to the source of the injury and get to a physio when recovering and learn ballet plie's then progress to squats... good technique with those and your knees will get good muscle support and hopefully not bug you again like mine dont :)

i'm bringing you a pot of cream for it in the meantime.. special recipe of anti-inflamatory and healing balm i swear by :)

I sympathize. Have had bad knees for 20 yrs but can cycle 350+ kms a weeks (after clicking kneecaps into place in the first km of every ride). Can't run across the road however..
Motorcycle racing (hanging off - squating from an acute angle) is the worst thing for knees. If you're going to squat with weights don't go past parrallel and squat from your heels. Good luck finding someone who has squatted for 20yrs and doesn't have knee pain however. Cycling and walking uphill rule for healthy, strong legs. Everything else seems to ruin them in the long run (no, dont run). Fish oil and glucosomine do help but you need to take highish dosages.
In the short term will help to raise your seat i.e. glue a fat pad in there to reduce the angle. Keep on the stationary cycle using a highish cadence to maintain movement and blood flow but don't stretch your quads until the pain has gone as stretching inflamed tendons is not going to help. My preference for a long-term painkiller is aspirin as seems to be the least toxic. Pop a couple and get out there.

Helen have you checked for fluid under the kneecap?
I smacked a ripple strip hard a few years back and the only way to relieve the pain was to drain the fluid off. Hurts like hell but the relief is almost instant

I have had water on knee twice before and its basically the body overproducing knee cap lube when it has been injured and horse needle sucking it out is only fix.

With knee injuries you should listen to ONE piece of advice from a long time sportsman who now has chronic knee issues ........ DON"T COME BACK TO SOON..... guess how I know about that simple titbit of info.
If only someone had said that to me back then ... but I probably wouldn't have listened anyway.
Wait until you are healed ...... knees usually settle down given time, rest and rehab. Returning to action too soon invariably causes more damage, not to mention what could happen if you do fall again
Not being able to bend your knee to sit on the bike is a pretty good indication you're miles away from being ready.
Believe me, masking the pain so you can compete is just plain dumb.
And I'm not a fan of pedaling for knee rehab .... repetitive movement is not good. There are ways to strengthen the muscles which are boring as hell but figure out what you're priorties are ..... recovery or a lifetime of pain and problems.
Having said all that, I still race, when I can, after alot of knee ops, so don't despair. Be patient and do the hard yards first.

I was lucky enough to be able to comfortably race both day's, even manageing a personal best time! They only hurt when I walk on them. My right knee has developed a lump the size of a golf ball but the pain is alot less. My left is really sore and clicks when I walk. Luckily I am off to see the specialist tomorrow...

Sounds like crook knees are pretty common, I thought I was unique - not really. I had a major bike accident 35 years ago - femour, tib & fib etc. In the last 10 years or so my knee has started playing up because of those injuries years ago - to the point that I can't run. A couple of months ago I had a bit of an off and sprained my ankle on the same leg. I went to the physio and he was brilliant. He gave me exercises to strengthen my ankle and my knee (he was really supportive of getting me back on the track as soon as possible). To cut a long story short, those exercises strengthened my knee to the point where it now feels better than it has for several years.
If you haven't been to see a physio, I suggest you do. I think ortho's are great when there are broken bits, but physios do know their stuff when it comes to non break injuries.
Now I just have to wait for my broken wrist to heal:Oops: - yea, first race day after my ankle was better I went and tossed it (my excuse is cold tyres:innocent:, not incompetance) and broke a rib and my ankle:(.
All the best with your recovery - and by the way, what a great day to have a birthday!!

I managed to actually see the Orthopaedic surgeon last week. He happens to be Geof the best Ortho Surgeon in NZ. He apologised for the huge run around that I had been having and then proceeded to take some fluid out to send to the lab for testing and he booked me an MRI (yet to have though) saying that I should be prepared to have a rebuild on at least one of them.
