Yo,
I'm Rach, from Welly.
I'm wanting some advice on the best motorbike + gear to buy, eg: helmet, safety clothes etc.
I have my learners motorcycle license which I've had for about 3 years but haven't got around to purchasing a motorbike yet, and can't really ride one.
I have done the Basic Handling Skills cert that is required for the license, and it was a bit tricky.
Obviously I will have to start out on a 250, they don't have the GN250's for sale brand new in shops anymore, I should have got one years ago!
Another thing, do I have to wear leather? I want to wear the safest possible clothing but I really don't like the idea of wearing leather, because it reminds me of bondage people, and its what corny "rebel" biker stereotypes from the 50s wear. Or Michael Jackson on the cover of BAD.

welcome to kb:niceone: you dont have to have leather, its better protection against abrasion but cordura is water proof, the main thing is good fit and what your comfortable with, as for the bike, thats a case of trying a few out and see what you like, personaly I wouldn't buy new, just get a good used bike

Hiya Rach, just get any old dunga if your not intending on keeping it for ages, just to get some skills up and get you through the few years until you can get something a little bigger..
As far as leather goes, you don't want to look like billy idol or james dean haha ? Seriously though its way better than cordura, there is all kinds of cool styles and fits and colors etc, the interweb is your friend when it comes to looking for gear, also my buddy Ben at motorrad in Welly is the man for gear, he could probably point you in the right direction..

Go to a bike shop and start by buying a helmet, jacket and gloves that fit you well. Don't go for top of the range if you can't afford it. Good shops will be receptive to your needs.
Buy more gear and upgrade gear as you understand more about what you need.
Gear in an intensely personal thing, and you'll see there is little consensus on Kiwi Biker on this matter, indeed people have been known to come to blows over the benefits of things like armour or Draggin jeans.

LOL. You may want to rethink getting into this sport then...
Put it this way, you posted this is in 'Biker Angels' and of all the replies only one is from a girl.
Good advice re: gear and shops. I would only add getting copies of Motorcycle Trader to see photos of the bikes on the market. Its a good way to see the range, easily and quickly

All the Welly guys are making up reasons as to why a tight fit leather suit (optional whip) would be ideal :)

Hey - welcome to KB, you'll find a lot of great info here.
Personally I love the leathers - get good rain gear to go over if needed and you're sorted.
Happy riding...

Yo,
...I'm wanting some advice on the best motorbike + gear to buy, eg: helmet, safety clothes etc.
...
I went gear shopping this past weekend with another new rider ... Nigel in at TSS was extremely helpful - explained the gear the pros and cons well ....
Also leather direct in town was very helpful - they are on Cuba street - they have a lot of womans and mens gear in there.

Hi And welcome.
Your best bet is to go into a store and try it on. If you are new to biking etc you NEED to know that your gear will fit and most importantly be comfy.
Depending on what type of riding you plan to do will depend what style/materials will suit you best.
Same with the bike. Go everywhere. Sit on as many as you can. There will be something out there that suits your needs.
In my pro opinion Motomart is the best. Plus the parts/accessories guys have such stunning personalities..
Good luck.

Well as long as theyre not too sexy, I don't want some jerk behind me staring at my ass!Hey hey! who you calling a jerk?! :shifty:
Anyway, no one can tell you are a girl on a bike, unless you have a really really really great ass, and even then it pays not to assume! <_<
There is some nice textile ladies gear on trademe. If you hunt around you can get jackets and pants for around $135 ish. You must have leather gloves though.
You don't need super high quality gear, unless you are going to be on the back of someone elses high performance road going missile, or your high performance road going missile. ;) You just need to be warm and dry to start with. In the winter you will get bloody cold, bloody quick, unless you have some polypro to put on underneath.
Welcome to KB and to biking. :first:
