Hey. Can anyone tell me what those (relatively) new illuminated bicycle signs are for on the Hutt Road offramp at Petone? I've seen them lit-up with no cyclists in sight, and heaps of cyclists around with no lit up signs. Is this meant to serve as a warning only, or does it give them right of way across the off-ramp? As far as I know, if they're off to the side of the main flow of traffic (i.e. in the emergency lane) then they're not part of the traffic flow and so should give way to turning vehicles (as you would if you were a pedestrian).

I've had more than one close call with cyclists cutting across the off-ramp with either no indication at all, or perhaps a quick wave of the right arm about 0.4 seconds before flying across the off-ramp at full speed. Dear bicyclists, please give more warning than this since I'm likely traveling at around 80k at this point, with any number of potentially dozy cagers behind me not expecting me to suddenly brake for you. My kids thank you.

I must admit, these cyclists have bigger balls than I do, because I'd never be able to just ride across that off-ramp at speed with only the briefest of glances over my shoulder. Aah well...

It's to warn you that you're crossing a cycle lane.

I signal like I'm turning right when crossing that turn off, but yes, I pray to god everytime I do that.

They apparently are weight switched, i.e. if a cyclist bikes over a pressure pad they light up. Also if someone was to get off at the stupidily positioned stopping bay to actually hit that button to say they were going to cycle across the turn off, it flashes.

So, that's what they say it's meant to do.

I'm not sure if it is weight, but heading North towards the Petone overbridge, there is a line of white diamond markings on the green cycle lane. If you ride over that, it triggers the light.

Like Drew, I signal right and hope for the best...

Cheers for that. I have no problem with bikes crossing there (gotta get across somewhere), but would prefer more warning than some give. But yeah, rather you than me. :shifty:
