Glad to see most comments were sympathetic too. I think we've all done some dumb things in the past that in hindsight we should have known better. Poor bloke.

From the comments:
"At least I can spell BRAKE in my signature"
"At least I can type it"
ROFL!
I saw this on another forum and cringed when I saw it! Ouch! I lube the chain with the bike on a rear stand in 1st gear with spray but turn it off when I need to physically touch the chain.

This seems to be a common occurence.

Still dont understand why anyone would even think they have to have the thing running to clean/lube a chain.

I lube the chain on the CT110 with it in gear. It's just quicker. Wouldn't dream of it on a bigger bike though.

I think we probably need to be clear though. He wasn't just spraying lube on the chain - he was using he hand to hold a rag against/around the chain in order to clean it. I feel sorry for the guy I really do.

Yeah, amazing photos. Lucky guy, it wasn't all the fingies. +100 for posting it.
I though everyone just jacked the bike up & spun the wheel by hand, to clean/wipe the chain....or take it (chain) off to properly clean, if it's that grotty/gluggy.
Is kinda like "don't check (with bare hand) if your muffler is loose when out riding" (yes saw that one happen :stupid:) Ouch! Burnies!

You are quite right. I know of 3 others who have lost bits of fingers doing that.
Still all is not lost, at least they will have a constant visual reminder as to how fucken stupid they really are for the rest of their lives.

jeeezus !!! just cleaned my chain tonight too, ready for a roadie to whakatane next week. I'm extra careful round the rear cog. I wouldn't even think about running my bike while on the paddock stand. Can't help but feel for the poor sod tho.

Tell me about it... I came off my Honda CB100 in the Hutt Valley - circa 1981 whilst try to fiddle about with my loose front fender - bolt snapped, fender rolled round under the front wheel. Use your imagination for the rest - luckily I was only going about 40kph. Still - I sat dazed on the kerb, after a local ran out to help me, waiting for my dad to come pick me up...

Why wouldn't it be real... this happens all the time. As posted by Maha, a member of this site did it a few years back and lost his thumb. Adrenalin is an awesome thing, and in this modern day some young people feel the need to take photos of anything interesting that happens in their life.
I've never injured myself cleaning a chain in this way, but I have destroyed a scrubbing brush and gave myself a fright one day when I wasn't thinking about what I was doing.

Ummm Yep ! and DAMHIW but;
a. It doesnt hurt (for the first half to hour, it just goes very, very numb)
b. When you have to wait until your wife gets home from work to take you to the doctors and you cant really ride theres nothing much to do except take photos of the damage
FWIW, I aint the member referred to above so that makes at least two
