Reputation. Huh?

I just noticed this whole reputation thing under my account. Apparently I have some. :-) Can anyone explain it to me. What is it's purpose? What is the difference between the different coloured boxes? Is there any way to tell who gave me a particular piece of reputation? Is there reputation etiquette?

It is bad form to request it, although some do anyway! Green gives you points, red gets points taken off you.
