View Full Version : Waikato: ...Ride: Coro loop 17th Sunday, April

Zapf
11th April 2005, 22:29
Ok everybody, just a heads up on a ride me and Aff-man are planning on.

Location: Coro loop

Time and Date: 9:30am meet LEAVING AT 10am at AutoBarn, Sunday 17th April

ALL WELCOME

Think we'll go thru Hunau's lead by someone other than me (don't know the roads well). Then onto Marinda and then Kopu. Fuel up at Kopu, head north to Coromandle township (more fallen rocks on the other side of the road if we loop the other way).

Note:
- Watch out for newly laid corners with loose chip seal after crossing the hill from Coromandle town to the other side.
- Watch out for lots of loose chip seal on road, between Matarangi and Whitihanga. Been resurfaced recently and have loose chips on the outside center of lane and in the median. Must follow wheels tracks at reduced pace.

I'll probly be riding slowish, as i am still learning how to ride a multi (my 750)vs a twin. And in the process of getting the suspension to something I like. As there are things you can do and not do and vise versa. So really this will be a all abilities ride, come along we wait and don't bite :)

The final say would of course be the weather, but its the Coromandles.... the weather man never get the it right for that place..

Why not start your own Saturday ride thread and apologise to Zapf?

Tis a big maybe, i can make both days, but the TL aint exactly upto road use, the track was alright as you could get used to what the bike was going to do each corner, but the road is a bit of a gamble with the swingarm the way it is, plus it's gotten worse since the track.

Will see, i'll keep an eye on the thread and see how goes. :niceone:

Zapf's call but if you're coming from Tauranga maybe Kopu but if ya short on time and the guys head up the hill from Kopu first instead of round the coast through thames, the intersection on 25/25A turn off to Whangamata would be a good place to meet, then carry on round the loop.

My 2 cents, if i go be good to meet ya's :niceone:

Yeh but it involves going alon SH1. I say we cut back to papakura, through the gorge, and either carry on through hanua and come out on SH1 for like 5km and then turn off to miranda, or alternativley head into clevedon and go through kawakawa bay. It will be a bit longer to go through kawakawa bay so maybe seeing as we leaving pretty late i say we go through hanua and that way :2thumbsup

its like 2 k on SH1 to dury off ramp then on to OLD GSH and you can nip over the motorway from down that way somewhere and back across to the east, over the ramamrama place!

go down Old GSR, till you get to Ararimu rd on your left, next to the disused pertol station, go past the tractor place, the dairy, the camp ground, over the motorway bridge, stay on this road all the way up the hill and down the other side, at eastern side of the hill turn sharp left, takes you past the hall, follow this road, till a y junction go left stay on this till you get to Hunua rd, from there left to hunua village or right Paparimu -happy Valley Lyons rd and SHw2, I would think they would go via Hunua over sky high rd and into Clevedon, , but I guess thats Johnos call, his ride, hope you have a good ride.

Note: Please read 1st page... updated with notes.

1.) don't look at the bike in front of you.... look at the road instead.

2.) don't try to follow another bike if they are too fast for you, cause you'll be pushing your limits

3.) smooth = fast, but you can't be fast and NOT smooth. Refer to rule 2

4.) ride like you own your lane, its the responsiblity of the rider behind you to pass safely if they are faster

5.) re rule 4, exception would be if you are passing cars. after passing cars you should move into the left side of the lane to create space for other riders that will be passing the said car and need space to pull in.

6.) have fun :) and NO pressure!

Bullshit, there's nothing smooth about the TL and it's reasonably eh fast.

Looks like Saturday has to be my riding day from now on, only last 3 Saturdays I've had to work cause of my useless staff going away or being "sick" (hangover from friday night) :angry2: :angry2: :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:
So I just got the hard word from the girl, and i'm "spending quality time" with her, guess i shouldn't say i'd rather be on my bike ( my TL )

So all you peeps have a good ride :ride: and be thinking of me stuck at home with the my bike oh i mean girlfriend all day before i have to go to work. Sucks to be me.

So all you peeps have a good ride :ride: and be thinking of me stuck at home with the my bike oh i mean girlfriend all day before i have to go to work. Sucks to be me.

as long as you get a good long ride today you should be a reasonably happy man :killingme :killingme :killingme

p.s. looks cloudy but apparently meant to burn off and be a good day. See ya all out there

A great ride round the loop today, Zapf's rides always seem to attract good numbers with today being no exception I think about 22 in total. Good to meet some new faces.

Did everyone else get home ok? How come no-one's posted a post ride report? Or has it been posted in another thread and I'm just too knackered to spot it?

Anyway, that was a good ride. I think it's the first time I've ridden around the corromandel loop. Didn't much like the roads from Thames to Corromandel township, too many 50k areas, too many cliffs right by the side of the road.
I had a thoroughly good time on the roads from Coromandel township to Whitianga though, felt like I was riding well (whether I was or not is another matter...).
I didn't sleep too well the night before the ride, and I reckon that led to me losing concentration a bit in the second half of the ride. Maybe I didn't eat enough lunch/drink enough/keep warm enough too, I dunno. But I didn't really notice I was losing concentration till I had a "oh crap" moment where I went wide on a 45km/h right-hand corner and instead of looking at the road and leaning over more, looked at the ditch.
I ended up only just going off the road and riding along in the ditch/gravel for a bit, the bike bouncing and waggling underneath me. I put my right foot down on the road, dunno if it helped or anything, but anyway I stayed upright, just kinda rode through it and made it back onto the road.
That's the third time I've done that in the 16 months I've been riding. IIRC, the first time was similar except it was in miranda. The second time I went for a ride in the ditch (on the wrong side of the road too, jeeze I was lucky) resulted in me ending up in a creek and Firefight coming and picking me and the bike up.
I guess I've gotta learn to tell when my concentration is going before I scare myself. It was kinda weird going offroad, it was like I was witnessing what was happening and was wondering when I was going to fall off. Like I was at a crossroads there where I could've either ended up lying in the ditch or back on the road riding home like pretty much nothing happened. Needless to say I'm glad I took the second route.

On another note...
sAsLEX, did you get any cool picks of me hanging off the bike going around that corner? ;)

Oh and for anyone interested, I was keeping track of the km's between fuel stops. I got 82km from Papakura Autobahn/BP to Mobil Kopu, 60km from Mobil Kopu to Corromandel township, 130km from Corromandel Township back to Kopu going the way we went through Whitianga and stuff. And it was 133km from Kopu back home to Titirangi.

great to hear you guys enjoyed it. the day started out cloudy and gray, but as the avo came around it was blue skys and sun shine.

didn't realise you had a moment erik, sleep has something to do with it, but also if you are tired it could have a lot to do with it as well. when I did the coro loop myself on my 250 twin, I got quite buggered and basiclly picked a spot on the coast and had a nap. perhaps its a lot more work riding a 250 around coro (from all the hills and inclines). Also I could imagen the naked bikes don't help, specially with the wind buffing agains you on the way there and back on the open road speed stuff... (just makes u more tired)

next time just say so and we'll find a nice spot on the coast and lie down for a while.

I didn't keep track on how many k's between towns, but I did notice that the 750 uses the similar amount of gas as the 650 twin did around 5L/100km which is very nice. The only time it used more around 6.5L/100km was from coro town to Whitianga, I had a blast on that road and was the best part of my day. I even wrinkled the rubber on my rear BT014! that is a 1st for me. it was like they were being peeled off... :niceone:

oh and everyone did end up coming back towards Kopu, without going onto Waihe. as time was running out and the day grows dark...

Grand total of 21 bikes! next time I might have to call out names to keep track of everyone...

EXCEPT when coming throu into Whitianga.... out of the 21 riders all up... I came in 12th WOHOOOOOO I left all the big boys behind....hehehe.

Awesome ride.... awesome group of riders. Nice cafe for lunch.

I hope Gazzer got his bike home ok and its not gonna be too much cost to get it all sorted out. He had stopped again just before the Miranda turnoff.
So I stopped as I was puttering along on my own. I managed to flag down a few of our other riders to also help out if necessary... Ray followed him along the Miranda straight.

I then headed off to head back up to SH1.... stopped at a garage to put on another top..as it was getting flaming nippy by that time... traffic was ok... but much better once I hit the motorway. I didnt hit the V8 traffic which was good.

Zapf, excellent ride.... and a wonderful turnout.
Well done mate.

coming up to the kopu bridge as they had stopped? Not thinking of that moment. I used lane zero for that, which amused me as I passed a couple of F650's which would have been far more suited to lane zero than me.

Admittedly if I had a $15000-$20000 bike covered in plastic I'd be slightly more concerned about stone chips from loose metal..

umm, led the second pack anyway :) admittedly the 600's did leave coro quite a while later so you certainly had the wood on us getting into whitianga. shame about that loose chip there

Great ride really, no bins despite cameras being brought out! I didn't obliterate by rear tyre either (new technique for me on the road; gas it through the corner but back it off when it opens out to avoid chewing the rear out)

like a few others, i was well knackered last night with sore legs (my riding style seems to resemble someone doing squats!) but a very content feeling at having had some good clean fun and no scares.

roo and mono let me go first cause they hadn't been round before (hows that for diplomatic?)

it has been a while that i've been on a decent ride (mainly for fear of needing new tyres) but with a possible change in job location looming, we may hang onto the gixxer for a bit longer instead of having to sell this and then sell a motard if we move.

the loop is definitely worth doing. thats what happens when ya spend too much time on SH22, you forget that there's other roads out there! my SA friends on the R1 and Busa where staggered that they'd been in the country for nearly two years and hadn't known it go around!

/me seconds that. Definitely more than the point 'n click / 'stamping-on-kittens' pass I first expected. r`spec yo. :msn-wink:

An excellent example how the the "those 600's are whooping my ass... i gotta upsize" mentality is just plain wrong. When you can ride your bike to the limit of it's envelope... thats when you need a bigger/sportier bike. The only thing you gain by obtaining a performance envelope that far exceeds your abilty and/or experience is a more certain date with a ditch someplace. *shrug*

Saw 2 cops in north end of Thames (50K zone, so no worries), no others anywhere.

I don't think there's any 'special balancing' on what mono got cause I decided to tape the offending flap to my boot at coromandel.. as funny as it may look from behind, its damnably annoying!

oh yeah, the other highlight was finding an excellent coffee shop in Coromandel town.. Umu cafe for those that weren't there- put it on your list!

good atomic coffee served and made the way it should be (ok, yes, I'm a JAFA, I admit - but I don't do that frothy decafe caramel latte rubbish type stuff!)
