Good time to buy with the FX so favourable. You don't say what specific model numbers of shock you're looking for but if you go down the Penske route, I'd recommend the 8983. It's fully adjustable for ride height (mine's set up for +8mm), and it has remote damping adjustment too - I've put the resevoir under the seat.

I got mine as part of a Blackbird group buy last year when the FX was about US$0.70 and it cost about NZ$1100 delivered, sprung and valved for my weight and intended use. The company I bought it off is Cogent Dynamics (http://motocd.com/). Rick and Joyce Tannenbaum, the owners; were fantastic to deal with.

Something to bear in mind though. A top of the line rear shock really shows up the front suspension of a 'bird which is way too soft and has too much sag. I didn't re-valve the forks, but I did put in longer, stiffer springs and shorter spacer tubes which work really well. I got these from specialist 'bird parts supplier JAWS in the UK.

Hope that helps.

Cheers for the info,I ,ve just put in the springs and spacer from jaws uk and it certainly feels stiffer,I was little concerned as I put a set of fork sliders in from a 96 bird and as mine is a 99 there is a difference in the bushes.
The lower bushes in the 96 are not as big as the 99 but it does not seem to have amde any noticeable difference...yet.I ve posted a question on the BIRD website and asked jaws too but he,s not got back to me yet.
The only problem I can see is there will be abit of extra wear on the fork internals but I ll change the oil again soon and see how dirty it is and of course keep an ear open for any strange noises.
I asked jaws for the exchange service he does for his rear shocks but he said the postage is so high I may as well buy a new one.....
I,ve got my eye on a second hand one from america that he says has only done 5k so I might buy that and upgrade the spring or see a suspension specialist here in christchurch to see if he can do anything with it.
Jaws has the refurbished and puts oil over oil instead of air over oil and an uprated spring.,which apparently is one of the mail downfalls .
Any hoo I,ll keep my eye open and try some other people as you right about the handling. The back end shows up really porly now the front end has been done.
Cheers for the info and I ll let you know how it goes...kenny

Good luck with the second hand option, The beauty of a top of the line unit is that they can be serviced easily. Robert Taylor here in NZ can service Ohlins or Penske.

You can see my Penske setup here: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=82503.
