Now that I'm not working 7 days a week and actually have annual leave (read: not self-employed!) I am longing for these two previous bikes I loved so much but used so little (well, the ZZR got used, the poor Bird had no life!)

Just itching for another sports tour whale in my garage.

Looking at that ZZR1100, though, only good memories come from it.

My first GSXR750, 1985 model. Blueprinted and balanced engine, lowered gearing, enlarged flatside carbs. Was a minter too. Why would I have it back? It was my first gixxer, and it was the bike on which I paralysed my arm. My brother sold it for me when I was in hospital. Never, ever make important decisions when just out of ICU and under the influence of hospital grade pain relief.

Really?you had one?..

Yes. But back then they weren't anything special, everybody was on Briddish iron.Things like Norton 650s (and BSA, Triumph, Matchy, AJS etc ditto) were just part of the scenery.

In retrospect , the "best" bike I ever had. But back then it was my transport, I couldn't afford a bike just as a hobby.

And a Velo Venom (especially with an Amal GP crab) is NOT a good bike for commuting.

And I was young and stupid.

To easy M,choose one.

I guess it would have to be the Rickman Metisse then, and not just because it was a rare handbuilt bike.It was like the mythical sword in those fantasy books and movies - the stable boy picks it up,and suddenly he is transformed into a powerful leader, possessing great knowledge and skill, able to vanquish any enemy before him.

I was just a dumb kid (well,21,but a late developer),and when I sat on the bike possessed skills far beyond what I had learned. It looked like I was a pretty good rider, but I always knew it was just the bike, and was always astonished when it transformed a mistake into something only an expert rider could do.But even though it wasn't me - it did transform me into a far better rider than I could of ever been without it.And I guess that is the message behind all those fantasy stories....unlocking the skills within....

I've had a lot of good and bad bikes before and after - but none have ever dragged me up unwilling to new levels.

I sold my old race / road bike about 8 yrs ago and really regret doing that. It was a CB400/4 with a 455 big bore , yoshi F1 cam , RSC valves n springs , RSC close ratio box, heavy duty clutch , 28mm slide carbs , double front disks , , all the normal 80s fruit and it was a little honey. Won me a few titles and was a really fun road bike before they took all the corners away. Std they were about 32 HP but this little monster had 52 and was just plain fun to ride. I called it grin factor.

Still , I now have the CBR 400rr and as nobody wants to buy that I guess I should make it the bike I never sell , this week anyway.

1969 Suzuki 350 2 stroke twin roadbike. Someone had given it the full custom paint job during the 70's so it had sprayed lace and mulitcoloured bubbles all in super toxic metalflakes which in its self should have been preserved.
I did not have the skill base to keep it running as good as it could because it was very tricky to keep tuned.
Wish I had it now, I could have it running sweetly but I was 17 and had not gathered enough knowledge at that stage, I just wanted a bike that went well every day.

Ah,the wrecks that have passed through my hands.....I was once asked to pick up a scooter under a hedge, one thing a friend forgot to clean up after he moved out.So I went and picked up the Puch,a 175 with the twin rubber saddles.I dumped it around the back of the house and left it there,a couple of months later as a diversion from doing real work I wondered if it would run. With a leadhead nail as an ignition key and fresh fuel it was a runner.I used it as a runabout and commuter at times - I was determined that if it even so much as stalled at the lights,I'd remove my BSA number plate and just walk away. And then one day someone asked if I would sell it.WTF??? That's like selling horse poo....why would someone pay money for such excrement? But $75 for nothing? Why not?.....Oh where is my scooter now??!!!!

Another time someone wheeled in a 1969 Yamaha AT1,the very first of them with a white tank and the cute carrier, electric start too.I got it running, but the main bearings were rooted...so he just left it with me.I coasted it down the drive, behind the house, and lent it against the water tank....and it never moved from there,I just mowed around it.I pulled the brake and clutch levers off it to use on my KT250.I pulled the 18 front wheel off and put it on the front of my XR200 for dirt track racing. When I shifted some years later I dragged it onto the front verge with the rest of the old bikes, and it was gone in a few hours.Bloody hell - the first AT1,and I threw it away!
