If your tyres are in reasonable nick, you ride smooth and you are aware of road surface conditions you should not have any problems. Apart from getting wet.

Riding in the rain is fun!! So stop being a sookie bubba and just do it!

Smooth & steady my friend & you will have no problems. Brake & accelerate smoothly & look well ahead. You will be harder to see so keep your light on & make sure you are in space on the road. Watch out for any muck, gravel, diesel that has been washed onto the road. Keep a safe following distance because cars can stop much quicker than you in the rain. Don't lean on wet manhole covers, road markings, shiny overbanding etc. Just ride well, you will be fine & very awake!:2thumbsup

Like everyone says, riding in the rain is easy. Dont do anything too suddenly, ie, braking, accelerating, leaning etc. You will have no problems anyway cause I bet that you're just going to ride up SH1.
If you cant handle a bit of water I am not sure that you can survive Welly's wind!!

FJRider
28th September 2009, 15:18
Just keep turning your head from left to right. The wind blows the screen clear... plus you get a better look about. No hard braking ...let the engine do that for you. Avoid white lines ... they are slippery.

This.
Once, I decided that my destination was more important than the risks involved.
I left one of my jacket vents open, and almost crashed when my right shoulder started to melt. It was horrible, had to book into ICU and everything for a re-structure.

I rode in the rain once... and then I did it again a bit later on too.

If it's a concern then take it slow, leave some space around you and you'll be sweet.

You'll be fine, as long as you have fresh brake fluid and you're chain isn't too tight.

It's REDUCE your speed.
For example, if it's pissing down with hail and shit, slow the fuck down.
When it gets better and sunny, slow the fuck right down again.

The whole secret of the thing is, that the rain is not continuous. It comes down in discrete drops.

So, if your counter steering is up to scratch , you should to be able to dodge the drops and wriggle your way between them, keeping completely dry.

Because it takes me that long to type what I really think, and then I delete it all and type something that is less likely to get me killed and my body parts stashed under various patios.

Waterproofs. As a person who rode *a lot* in wet conditions I can tell that hypothermia is a bitch.

ynot slow
28th September 2009, 21:20
Hypothermia is more than a bitch, had mild case years ago,was tramping with 2 other guys, started off on bikes then walked when road ended, and track was only pole marked if any.Spent 9 hours in back country till we hit the hut.We all realised we'd been bloody lucky,as were wet and wind had got up.No way I'd like to be on road in that condition.

Next time you may not be so lucky with the weather...best you get yourself a mentor and practice, because sooner or later you are going to need to learn how to ride in the wet.

best you get yourself a mentor and practice, because sooner or later you are going to need to learn how to ride in the wet. It's not the wet YT, its that hard-as-glass front tire he's using. The slightest provocation or inattention on a tar snake and he's off.

My young fella had a nasty slide on them in the teeming rain. Hard lesson learned.

Ask Mavis what she thinks of the shinkos in the wet. :dodge:

I know what shitty tyres Shinkos are...which is why I wonder why anyone has them on their bike...getting a cheap 2nd hand good one to replace it would be the FIRST thing I'd do!

Accident (with potential injuries and loss of life) or $180 (tops)...very difficult decision.
I know which way I went....
