This is why we get high acc charges and a bad name to boot.
Having watched twice, I have come to the conclusion that the gsx1200 doesnt realise he has front brakes.
Im pretty sure this is over the rimutakas (confirmation??).
On a side note gsx1200y are puuurdy bikes....mmmm.......moon waffles....

It shows two things IMO. One, that a 250 is plenty adequate for most NZ roads and, two, that they are typifying the idea of bikers being "temporary citizens" as any corner could have been concealing a slow vehicle which they would have run right up the tailpipe of at the speed they were travelling at.
Too often on country roads I have rounded a corner and been grateful I was not travelling 10km/h faster finding exactly that in front of me.

Yes, it's the Rimutaka's. The south (Hutt) side to be precise.
That's Craig on the 12. He know's his bike has front brakes, they probably just weren't working that day. Craig's a bit "special" but a good coont, none the less. I'd ride with him again any day.
P.S: He's much quicker on the uphill and no, He's not a KBer.

There was too much traffic to ride like that.
I suspect he is not aware that he is dragging the rear brake so much.
On one occasion he almost lost the rear end.

Next time I see you remind me to teach you some really cool hand signals I have adapted to use when this sort of thing happens
:tugger: One of them looks a bit like this, but could also be misconstrued as shaking your fist if you dont get it exactly right.
:weird: This one has many variations, but generally the messsage can be clearly understood
:finger: And of course there is always this one, sometimes you can use more than one finger too.

The 250 though is a nippy wee beast. Ran wide on a few corners though...or maybe them be "racing" lines...cos we all know the roads a racetrack ;)

Some rider training and a better selection of lines would greatly benifit both these twits.
Some of the worst lines i have seen and i assume over exagerated for the camera. Sorry , i didnt work.
Ducky848
29th September 2009, 20:09
The first corner was dodgy no doubt but after that I dont see that much of a problem. Camera views are restrictive, the rider has a much larger field of view and is higher up to boot. Most of the corners that look a little blind prolly had reasonable visiblity around them.
The 12 appeared to suffer engine lock from knocking down a few cogs too many rather than over aggressive rear brake.
The lines may not be the best, but, it aint a racetrack and sometimes there are reasons for not holding the perfect line, be it shit on the road, looking for better visibility, passing a car, yadda yadda.
Looked like great fun to me.

The rear lockup is pretty hilarious, bet that was a pucker moment to be sure.
It looks like he was leaning his body out of the corners though? I thought the idea was to lean into the corner so there is more of your weight on the inside so the bike can be more upright?

Shifting your body around shouldnt really be neccessary on the road, I find usually weighting the outside peg, gripping the tank with my knees and a nice relaxed hold on the bars is enough.

When I see riding like that (and I would imagine that it's reasonably common on any given weekend around the country) it does make me feel that those riders have what's coming to them sooner or later.
I still don't see why riders feel the need to bare their balls when it comes to putting others at risk from a poor judgement call or bike malfunction.
Seeing a rider cross that centreline like that I would find it very hard to feel guilty if my car bonnet collected a flying bug wearing leather or cordura. The unacknowledged problem is that I'm just as likely to be the "crash statistic" when they fly into the front of my car (or worse, smacking the front of my bike in).
Blah Blah Blah, I could go on, but you've heard it all before.

That's what I noticed. Even though he seemed to be sticking his knee out on the corners a bit, he was leaning the bike in, rather than leading with his shoulder (and/or getting off the seat a bit). Not the greatest cornering technique.
But I wonder how many of us would fare if we were filmed like that? What poor technique(s) would be revealed?

Yes, actually I have. But I still can't see that (aside from dirt bikes) there'd be any advantage to leaning the bike further into the corner than your body. Some techniques hold for all bike models.

It suprisingly does work for those. They're a heavy whale of a thing and it's easier to counterbalance the bike by doing it; especially in the twisties.
Maybe my riding was sub-par as well (Which well may be the case) But that is how I found it cornered better. Not something I do on the Duc now tho

It's probably effective for the pace, but it's not the most efficient.. Equal and opposite - the more the bike leans in, the more likely it is to break away in the opposite direction. It would be a precursor for a high side I would have though.

This would be a very good video to use as the basis for some rider training - that of the rider in the vid as well as the rest of us!
I also noticed that the rider was pretty much sitting upright while he leaned the bike way over into the corners. Now, I'm just a newbie myself but surely there is no advantage to putting more lean than necessary on your tyres? Especially with those high banks that could easily have dropped a bit of loose rubble on the roads - meaning traction could be a problem in a lot of the left-handers already.
It would be fun to sit down with a bunch of people who actually know how to ride and analyse the good and bad techniques. Hmmm... Where do you think I could find a bunch of people who actually know how to ride?

I wonder if the two riders in the vid actually took the time to review and analyse their riding, breaking it down corner by corner. Maybe they just continued to ride and enjoy themselves and didn't really give a flying fuck what others thought of them.
One thing I can say about the guy on the 12, from having ridden with him for a couple of years. I'm fairly certain He'd "take his medicine" if there were any consequences to be had as a result of his actions. Analyse that!

Ah but people who video and then put that footage up for public viewing always have an interest in what other people thought. Otherwise why film it and make it public? Publicity always brings admiration/criticism/reaction - it's why they do it. (It's just that everyone likes others to rave about their prowess and ability rather than face detractors).

You assume the riders both know each other?. There's a high probability in this case that the two may have just met over a smoke at a well known roadside carpark.
