I notice a bunch of people going on about the wonderfull Britain bike.
How it went out hand attacked the world.
Ya know the thing is the BSM500 seems to have been forgotten.
I reckon that bunch of kiwi blokes need to be given credit for what they achieved.
Yep the Britain had a crack at the yanks in their super twins class. The BSM though was purpose built to take on the very top level of motorcycle sport the 500 two strokes. I just wonder how well they would have gone if their timing wasn't so bad and two strokes got dumped in favour of big four strokes??

Britain bike - you mean something like a Norton? or Britten as in John Britten???

I think that the Buckley didnt do well because it was... well it was crap basically.

Even 600 proddy bikes could easily waste it at Ruapuna, so it may have had a chance in F3....

And its only claim to being unique was that it had CNC cases

Yer but it sounded purdy and its a great centre piece in any museum.

Its a shame that they didnt let Kerry onto the team to tune it, then it would have given ol Erv Kanemoto a real fright! :msn-wink:

Yeah like most women it looks better upside down:whistle:

Seeing it wasted at Wanganui by GSXR600s didn't inspire patriotic thoughts.

Hey Dodgy, think you were with us when we watched it fail to qualify at Philip Island.:pinch:

Now there's a Real bike in the background just out of sight.

Ahh but how well did the brittain do first season?
I just think its a tribute to kiwi workmanship that it was even able to get up and go round and round.

No 'a's in Britten

erm so ignoring the Duc & Denco engined ones;

1990 USA Battle of the Twins - Gary Goodfellow & Robert Holden, 3rd & 5th. Think Gary was in for much better but ran out of fuel.

so, er not bad actually.

To build either a 500cc or 1000cc 2 stroke v-twin. Those cats could make me a nice set of cases!

Well settle for a 500 parallel twin. Those are readily available from Trinity & good for 100hp or 120 in race form or you could go the whole hog up to 610 I think.
Mine cost ~ 4k in engine, much cheaper than machining a one off. The 496 kit was used to win Pikes peak in 500cc class, got 1st & 2nd a couple of years back, haven't checked since.

There are kits around to make a 1100 triple & I think a 1000 twin.

Hehehe...probably would if I rode it. I've always though a couple of power valve equipped KX500 cyls on a nice set of cases would be the go...but a v-twin so there's no need for a balance shaft etc...

Fit nicely into an RGV 250 frame.

Well my 496 fits nicely in a heavily braced RG frame with RGV running gear, but people overseas have put them in YPVS's, Apr RS250s, RGVs & scarily . . Mitos.

Yeah man, remember those hats we wore!! Back then Phillip Island was wild at nite with all the street antics - pretty tame now..

Yep, we did hope for the best but it was a dog then and now.. I remember one of its last outings we commented how when it was running it sounded like the big end was on the way out... and then a few minutes later it died in a sad way and was packed up

But on a serious note the BSL was unfortunate to be a victim of new rules that required unleaded fuel. That, and a batch of dodgy Honda pistons, effectively gave it the bad name it now seems to have. Just out of interest I wonder how the Honda RS500 that Richard Scott rode at Wanganui etc would fare against modern 600's running on NZ fuel etc?

The BSL engine is available for veiwing for those interested in the front office of Buckley Systems LTD.

Well, yeah .......

Ah.. yes... the other bikes seemed to go ok on unleaded. It was just slow and shite. Laughable when it had to be upgraded to a Modernas. Sorta like going from a Trabant to a Lada....
