View Full Version : Found notice on bike: "Please don't park in dedicated motorcycle parking spots"!

Ok, I think now someone's really lost it (from the council that is).

When I walked up to my motorbike (which was parked correctly in one of the rare dedicated motorcycle parking bays) I saw what seemed like a parking ticket. The one's which they wind around your throttle with a rubber band. I thought: Hmmm, that's strange and had a closer look. When I read it I wasn't quite sure if it was a joke or not. It wasn't.

The friendly note, issued from "Absolutely positively Wellington" reads in short words"

PLEASE PARK WITH CONSIDERATION. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH MOTORCYCLE PARKS IN WELLINGTON ( someone's got something right here). IF YOU HAVE TO PARK YOUR BIKE ALL DAY ITS SAFER TO PARK IT IN A PUBLIC PARKING PLACE. WE ARE IN NEGOTIATION TO GET REDUCED RATES FOR MOTORBIKES. YOUR MOTORBIKE MIGHT BE MORE SECURE THERE.

Ok, let me get this right:

- Council asks the public to be active in reducing the polution. You do your part in not using a car but a 2 wheeler.

- Council doesn't want to allow however parking on footpath , end of car parks or other spots even if you park it in consideration to others

-Therefore from November onwards parkwise is officially allowed to issue parking tickets for scooters and bikes parked WHEREVER except dedicated bike parking spots.

-Council even admits that there are not enough dedicated motorbike parking spots but refuses to create more

-if you park "all day" in one of these parking spots you're then inconsiderate. So if you're working and paying your taxes do not park your bike there?

- Next possible step: hourly parking fee for bikes?

Heeeeelllooooooooo???? Is anyone home at the council?????

Trying to find motorcycle parking is a farce in Wellington, there are spaces for approx 450 motorbikes but statistics indicate a likely estimate for motorcycles requiring parking spaces to be in the vicinity of 1000. This means that over half of those who enter the CBD looking for a park will not be able to find one. Where are all these motorcyclists supposed to put their bikes after November when the parking vultures can start issuing tickets out willy nilly to anyone parking "in a non-designated spot".

Good to know the WCC coffers will get a huge boost ay?

You would think that the Council would encourage the use of motorcycles by turning a few more of the car spaces into motorcycle parking but then I guess that would reduce their daily take from the already overtaxed public as well.

Its a case of "up yours" from your friendly (haha) council.

You realise what has happened don't you?

Someone ELSE got the notice - and then put it on your bike.

I know someone who works in finance, and whenever they get a aprking ticket they put it on someone elses car. He says 90% of the time the other driver pays.
He thinks its funny for some reason. That's finance for you. Tight bastards willing to screw you for every dolar they can.

Hello? Try reading the posts before yours - it was an informational notice, not a ticket.

Well that's OK then.
If KB's foremost expert on Life, The Universe, and Everything wrote the ticket, then it was most assuredly deserved. We can ignore this thread now that we know everything is OK in the world.

Did any of you welly KB'rs get one of these notices on your bike yesterday?

If you didn’t or it got too wet and mangled to read it, here it is.

Please Park with Consideration

There aren’t enough on-street parks for motorcycles.

If you are parking all day, please consider parking in a commercial parking building. Your bike will be more secure and sheltered from the weather and you will be guaranteed a space. We have negotiated with the city’s parking providers to get motorcycle parking at reduced rates.

You may want to get together with friends or colleagues to share a parking space in a private garage – check with your building owner or employer.

Parking anywhere other than in designated motorcycle parking spaces is hazardous, illegal or a nuisance to others. Motorcycles and scooters that continue to park illegally will soon start to receive tickets.

Absolutely Positively Wellington City Council

This is fucking bullshit... I can’t believe they keep making it harder for bikers... didn’t ACC costs go up a couple months ago also???

Bastards... they have noticed there is too many bikes on the roads and not enough cars so they put more tax on the petrol starting this week, plus another 3cents by the end of the year, and they don’t even bother to put one car park aside for bikes on every street.

It’s just another one of those money things... “bikers aren’t paying for parking” on no we have to do something to fix that... “let’s force them to park in parking buildings“... “if that doesn’t work we will start charging bikes to park in bike parks”... “we have to squeeze some money out of them, after all it’s not fair on cagers having to pay for a car park”...
:argh:

We need to do something about it... I know there must be some KBrs that work for the council..........
:angry2::angry2::angry2:

we'll for one, I'm gona keep parking on my usual spot. cause the spot i park in is private property and i have permission to park there from the building owner. the building boundaries go right down to the gutter almost so the council and park wise have no say... bitches...

If you park in a motorcycle park, in the correct fashion, the sign posting no time limit, does the council have a problem with this?

They shouldn't as you are legally parked and within the bylaws.

Waste of breath attempting to communicate with communications specialists like that. The idea is to keep fobbing people off with bullshit, all the time filtering for support until he has enough people on his side.

Good luck with that.

SteveI agree, it is apparent to the WCC that there is not enough motorcycle parks, and they are pushing the problem back onto the MC users.
Next breath, the first 450 MC parkers are catered for, the excess after that are a fuckin nuisance, should turn around and ride home and catch the train or drive their car.
The problem has highlighted to the WCC that motorcycle allday parking is free compared to cars, they intend to charge for all day parking just like cars.
Fare enough then if they are upright about that then I'd say, just tell as it is.
But that still does not fix the problem that there is still not enough motorcycle parks, paying or not.

Well, yesterday, when forced to cage it for the day I found a real gem
An EMPTY unused undercover FREE motorcycle park, with ONE scooter occupying it and room for another 20 bikes!!!

Anyone parking om the Terrace and willing to add 30 meters and a flight of stairs to the morning walk to get the bike behind a security cam, and semi undercover, PM for details

I also spent a lot of wasted energy on the thread John Visser was replying to

I have contacted Wilsons and the other large parking agencies in Wellington City

NONE have been asked to make space for bikes, but all were willing to negotiate some of the little corners and 'behind column' spaces they all have wasting away

Absolutely positively profitable WCC don't have a problem yet, untill said sign indicates a 2hr parking restriction that is.

Watch this space......

I also spent a lot of wasted energy on the thread John Visser was replying toYeah bro, clearly they have the most experienced person on the council working on that. ;) Get the guys' business card and see what letters are after his name - my bet is he has a few degrees in communications and psychology. Watch him deftly sidestep any rational approach he cannot win, and revert to his own plan. There is more harm than good to be done, talking to people like that.

Nothing to do with Council ... unless you park across the road and there is a provided bike park to use - no problem.

At Te Papa itself you can drive past the barrier and park as long as you don't use a car park .. e.g. up on the verge area etc.
