ok,I have been riding avg. an hour a day since jan 15th. 1 service at colemans.

Do I need to oil it regularly? will it still function fine without it?

In terms of bike maintenance all I thought I had to do was fill it will oil and petrol and have an occasional service. have I missed something vital?

Needs to lubed every 600km. I prefer Motul Chain Lube, as is is the least messy one I've found.

If you don't lube it, you'll wear your chain out fairly rapidly.

well guess what.
:eek5: :eek5: MY CHAIN IS ROOTED. :eek5: :eek5:
I went to motomail to start picking out new helmets and gear and the salesman (mick) went outside for a smoke and pointed it out to me. absolutley munted pretty much.

I was intending to go over to BugJuices house but Motomail said it was pretty dangerous. BJ very kindly came around to mine and we (well he) tightened the chain so that its not so dangerous.

My plan of attack at the moment is to buy the chain + sprokets from Colemans and then take it straight to Mt Eden Motorcycles who have offered to do it 'while I wait' so to speak.

*Edit3 I just called colemans but they have to order the sprokets in. Ive been assured they will be there before 8am tomorow but heres hoping.

with anyluck I should be back on the road before 11
I have to be at auckland airport at 11:30

oh wish me luck its going to be a very busy morning tomorow :ride:

*edit:

I got most of the job on film if any noobies want to see it done. its simpler than I thought.

and with every video purchased youll get a special surprise! the audio of me dropping my bike straight after it was fixed :brick: unfortuantly the camera was pointing at a wall at the time.

*edit2:
 no its not for sale. if anyone wants it Ill put it online.

Somewhere in this site is a thread about a basic maintenance meet, suggest you bring along your bits to the first one as agood introductory project.
Adusting the chain is a pretty simple affair, but you probably already know that by now.

Clean it and re-oil as often as possible, including checking for tight spots and rust.

Could be the difference between death and living. (The extreme examples always work better)

Chains are always the most over looked item on a bike, even though it causes the most damage, and is one of the biggest risks.

Mate, you should spare no expense...

I on average, clean my bike every 2 to 3 weeks. Each time my chain, and sprocket get a clean with a toothbrush and kerosene, washed and re-lubed at the end with Chain-Wax. To be honest though, I've never tightened my chain on my new bike (always been done at servicing, and I check it regularly - it stays at a good tension). I guess it's relatively easy, but looks a little harder than my first bike (Honda CBR250). The Honda was dead easy to adjust the chain, but it never stayed at the same tension (Probably from the chain being stretched?).

The longer you spend on care and maintanance, the more likely you are to pick up maintanance issues. It's also a great way to spend an afternoon if you've got nothing better to do (like me).

Seconded -= I had one on my RZ350, and then the GSXR750. 20,000km out of a chain...
Will be going on the LC when it gets the engine overhaul and back on the road at the end of this year.

I've done going on 17000kms on my chain, no scott oiler just regular maintanance as described above, and it's still looking good...
Personally, I don't like the idea of a Scott Oiler. I mean while a chain may be lubricated, if it's dirty/full of shit, that can't be good for the chain or the sprockets...

Sorry to hijack the thread but since we are on the topic of chains. Do you all "degrease" your chains and sprockets with DEGREASER?

I oil my chain quite often and alot of dirt / dust / hair etc... get stuck to it.... So I have used DEGREASER on the chain, sprockets, rims etc.... good idea or not???

Depends if it is o-ring safe (if you have such a chain). But, is a degreaser strong enough? As I said, a toothbrush and kerosene gets absolutely everything off. Then, wash the chain with whatever you wash the bike with, dry completely and re-oil / re-wax... I think that built up dirt definitely causes extra wear and tear.

I lube my chain every week. I ride daily (just about) and it's parked up outside.

I dont know what happened actually. I figure you were holding up the bike while I undid the belt and the belt just snapped.

I need to get a firewire cable for audio to work I think.

I dont think I've ever lubed an o-ring chain. Most I do is make sure there is no built crud on them. They seem to last longer than the sprockets do anyhow and I always replace them with the sprockets.

Non o-ring chains, I lube - have even been known to give them the odd oil bath - but being a cheap bugger, I just get more off the spool.

Ok, This weekend was a big one in terms of my and my little bike.

woke up friday morning, 7:20 raced over to colemans. picked up sprockets and chain for $120. not too bad.
8:15 arrived at Mt eden motorcycles but the techs dont start till 8:45
8:45 Drop bike off and go kill an hour around. find out awesome place to buy bike paint (carcolors in albany)
10:15 pick up bike. only pay $60! which is freaking awesome considering they did it on the spot and didnt make me wait a week.
Raced to albany and speant $108 on custom paint and primers in spray cans for the bike.
11:30 arrive home and drop off cans. race out to airport to see folks off to england.
1:30 meander home at 120 (no not really, I kept within the speed limit)

2:00 sand of last of paint and spray bike
4:00 run out of paint.

Saterday:
9:00 went to Motomail. tried on a dozen plus helmets, 1 fitted which was plain black, quite peeved at this as I was ready to spend $700 or so on one.
10:00 went to colemans again. they did me a good deal on a HJC CL-14 and blue tinted visor ($325)
11:30 over to albany carcolors to pick up some more white primer
12:15 realise that they close at 12:00
1:00 go to repco kelston. buy white primer, finish the white coat and put a few more coats on other parts.
2:00 run out of blue. race over to repco, get blue, coming back I got pulled over cos I past a police car at 88k in a 50k zone cos im a numnuts.

put bike away. the rest I will explain with emoticons cos im a cool intarweb dude.

:crybaby: :apint:  :apint:  :apint: :apint: :apint:

hope you bought the Mt Eden guys a beer for slipping you in like that. Like I showed, isn't too hard to have done it yourself, but I guess it's all done and you know it's fixed..

turned out to be quite an expensive week for ya, huh?

all that was in the space of 40 hours or so.

Well, I ddnt actually watch them do it or anything. they just said 'go wait upstairs' so I did.

I did of course gratiously thank them for doing it.

Now I just need to find the nozzle for my lube :brick:
do most of you's just get a mate to push the bike along while lubing it or hoist it?

get a rear pit stand which lifts the back wheel up, then you can do what you like, or improvise (car axle stands etc, just don't poke things thru the spokes), or one of you pull the bike towards you and pivot on the kickstand, while the other lubes the chain.

or I guess from a comical side of it, one of you could ride slow while the other chases you with a can of lube. Let me know how much actually makes it onto the chain tho!

I think keeping the oring/xring seals on chains is very important as once they crap out the grease thats lubing the link escapes and your chain is on the way wearing out.

My method is to dampen (not wet) a rag with petrol (kero would be better)and clean all the crap off the back sprocket and chain. I don't worry about the front sprocket as taking the cover off seems like to much work.

Once everything is clean (after a couple of rags) I just rub grease into all the chain while turning the back wheel over. Then rub off some off the excess grease. This put heaps of grease around the orings and doesnt throw off like oil.

Ive been doing much image stuff today (sig) so Im not going to make a visual aide. but masking tape a can to the side, some string, masking tape and a couple washers and you can make a makeshift remote spray can trigger,

ride along and give the string a little tug everytime you think the chain could do with a lube.

but otherwise I like the kickstand lean idea. simple. just make sure I dont do it drunk and drop it again.

Thirded -= Use mine daily and fill the oiler once a month (or before a 1000 miler)
Chain lasts about a year or 15-20000 km's. before then I had about 8-10000 out of a chain cos i never remembered to oil it. It's the second best mod you can make to a bike.
