The noughties are drawing to a close.

All of a sudden it's October.

It only seems like five minutes ago I was waiting for the countdown in the Summer of '81.

I know the decade doesn't end blah blah, but the noughties do.

So the discussion is, what have been the standouts for the period '00-'09?

The good things. Best motorcycle/s, band, music, events, things that happened to you?

Getting paid to stay sober on the 1999/2000 cut-over and then nothing needed "help" was "fun".

The decade of terroist attacks.. that's about it when I look back.

But the good things, this is the decade of my coming of age so far too many good things to list that have happened to me personally.

Well 2 standouts for me. The very start of the naughties spelled the end of 22 years of wedded bliss, horrible time, but very formative and enlightening :sunny:

The Naughties for me started with the XLV750 - back in Auckland and exploring the roads I used to ride in the '70's.The bike was perfect for the job - I found my gravel roads had been sealed,so I rode them all with new speed,and pushed my boundaries until I found the gravel again.I also came back to trials,riding my old bike in the Twinshock class.The Naughties have been fun on bikes,learning,consolidating,experimenting - all the previous decades came together and I was able to integrate it into my riding.

Personally the times were hell,I was pushed to near breaking point.My mother had terminal cancer and died,so did my 2 closest aunties.We were a family of 4 living in a caravan on a backyard,then I shifted down here,gutting and refurbishing a house.I neglected my business with these distractions and I nearly dropped the ball,kicking it further out of reach as I stumbled to pick it up again.

As this decade comes to a close I almost feel like I have retired....in a low pressure,low income job,pushbiking to work,I have a hernia and am on blood pressure pills.My granddaughter lives a few doors up the road and I see her everyday....I am kind of content,but feel it is a bit of a rest before all the next drama descends upon me.

This year I have put together the bike that sums up my nearly 4 decades on bikes....it's all I have learned and explored in one bike,the bike that is more me than anything else I have had.

It all started in the '70's,the best time in the world.

I'm just going to ramble abit, it wont be in any order, just as I think of it.
9/11 would have to be the biggest thing of the decade, its far reaching effects are still with us today,and will be for years to come, regardless of wich theory about it you belive.
I don't have a noughties favourite bike, and I'm not sure wich would be the bike of the decade, I'll let others thrash that out.
Its been great to see NZ bands, and Artists, take the world on, and make some good head way, likes of D4s, Shihad, The Datsuns etc.
On the Conservation side of the ledger, its good to see that we all seem to be waking up to the health of the planet, we may not know what we are going to do about it yet, but we are awear of the problem.
The personal high point of the decade was meeting a lady by the name of Danielle, the low point was watching her waste away and die of a horrible disease.
Another good thing was stumbling on KB, its made me laugh, rant, and shake my head in wonder.
The Martin Jet pack would have to be the vechicle of this decade, will we have one each in ten yrs time?.

Heh, the noughties were the time I discovered no one gave a fuck, and I really was on my own.

So twenty noughty ten is going to be a very noughty one indeed.

The Guiness-fuelled bender in Galway that was the countdown to '00 was a bloody good way to start the noughties...since then I've gained a wife, a new country of residence and two sons and a Lambretta...

Sports-wise, two Ashes wins and a RWC for England are comprehensively out-highlighted by Tranmere Rovers' appearance in the League Cup final at Wembley...

Musically, the 90's kicked the 00's arse...but finally seeing the Specials made up for the paucity of good new stuff.

Lastly, after 20 years of ticking boxes, I finally voted for someone who actually made it into government!

The noughties is the decade I started to ride bikes in, so it was off to a great start when I got my first bike in '01. Started teaching...stopped teaching. Got married, had a baby, got separated (that's actually a good thing, BTW). Met a fabulous bloke. Bought my gixxer 750 - best bike in the world!! Not to mention I've made some fabulous friends through KB - MBB, Sharry, Mom & Maha, MadDuck, Nasty, Yungatart, Miss. L to name but a few. Yep, it's been a good decade really. :D

Isn't it a great pity that the name "noughties" (or its variant "naughties") never caught on? I don't think teenies will catch on either.
