I can get my vtr 250 to 140 no trouble.... and then i freak a bit
tried to push it harder an the track a few weeks back but i think the fastest i could get it was about 145 down the back straight, i reckon there is more there but jees the wind force is a little overwhelming. Next week i'll push it a bit harder:yes::yes:

It's interesting to see the Hyosung results.... They really forgot to configure the speedos didn't they? :innocent:
I'm glad I had dyno readings through all the gears to see how accurate mine was.

I love my Hyosung, looks good and goes well enough to keep up with traffic fine. Not quite as quick as the CBR's, but cheap on gas. I so far have gotten 400 k's to $24 of 98 octane. Pretty cheap in my books. Plus it'll sit on 120 k's an hour easily. I'm quite chuffed with it lol.

Seriously, why would you want to do something like that? The CBR250s are a shitload quicker than the GT250R. If you really want to go racing then race the CBR or get a bucky.

if he is scared at 150, would you rather he try to learn to go faster on the road where he can lose control, and take YOUR bike out as wel?...

starting racng at the tracks and shit is where alot more people should start early on I reckon. might teach them more about control handling and the physics that affect motorcycles.

it's the time of year when it's hard not to trip over a learner friendly trackday at manfield, and if you decide you want a race bike, then i'd look at 400s, they're cheaper than 250s (even if the proposed law change goes ahead, the good 1s will be off the list still).

The old 250,s (cbr, zxr etc) will waste any of the newer 250s. And the cbrs are still bullet proof after almost 20yrs. Ive owned 2 cbr250s, a nsr and an rgv. Got both cbrs off the clock, so 190kmh ish. Then got it past 200kmh, in the redline 6th gear, drafting behind a mtes vfr400r. The 2stroke nsr and rgv have rediculous acceleration for a 250 but still wont go much past 200kmh. A mate who owned a hyo gt250r seized the rear cylinder doing 180kmh... Nuff said there:laugh::scooter: If it was me buying another 250 id go for the older 4cylinder bikes. Proper sports bikes.

the problem now though, is that after 20 years of being treated like that (and largely by noobs that dont know what chain lube is, or when the proper service intervals are etc etc etc) they are no longer as reliable as they once were.
even the ones in reasonably good nick have deteriorated in other ways. things like brake lines arent designed to be 'for life' items, they should be replaced.
So while they may have the edge in a top speed run over newer 250s, they just don't have the reliability in the long term of ownership.

there is a bit more to it that just having the fastest bike out there.

and before you try rip me out for saying that when I have an R1, I will point out that I had plenty of 'slow' bikes in my time.

Having a bike that 'could' go 200 if it wasnt laying in the shed fucked isnt nearly as good as a bike thats 2 years old, still under warranty and isnt going to need any attention for the next 3-5 years, even though it taps out at 150-160-180 whatever

It's interesting seeing people only making mid hundred's out of 250ccs, when I managed to squeeze 124km/h in fourth gear out of my 125 (down a slope) a few months ago.

Friend's said the VL250 can't go over 150km/h due to some limiter as he's noticed the needle pulls back every time he approaches 150.

I personally haven't managed to get the bike over 130 and that requires somewhat of a downwards slope ...

Make sure you don't get caught, (easier said than done) but if you do get busted going 160 ish then your going twice the legal limit so it's probably almost certain that your going to lose your license. but i'm sure you know that anyway, and i have sped too so i'm not keen on being a hypocrite.

but remember at those speeds it is a lot harder to react to certain things that may happen

If you're going to get done for that kind of speed then you might as well not stop if you know you can get away with it.

I'm comfortable going fast on straights... I don't feel unsafe. I told them I was gonna ride at my own pace which is why I was going slow around corners. Surely you don't think 160 on a straight kills you... maybe if you come off... but I don't think there is that high a chance of that happening on a straight when it's you and the road and no other traffic. And your eyes are everywhere as usual checking for any slight movement from animals and road surface...

Actual tank slapper. Hence the "splat" I put after the sentence. My wrists didn't get broken though, luckily as they left some choice dents in the tank

My son 142Kmh out of a FXR150 at Manfeild on back straight on the rev limiter
No speedo but did the maths on gera ratios etc

Heres the FXR top speed thread,

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/130502-FXR-top-speed

It has all the figures to work out top speed, just find the Primary, gearbox and sprocket sizes to work out your REAL top speed

He had fun on the CBR but it wasnt on the limiter, the FXR was:shit: Bloody hoon

Transmission:
Clutch: Wet multi-plate type
Transmission: 6-speed constant mesh
Gearshift pattern: 1 down 5 up
Primary reduction ratio: 3.500 (70/20)
Final reduction ratio: 3.428 (48/14)
Gear ratios, Low: 3.000 (33/11)
2nd : 1.857 (26/14)
3nd : 1.368 (26/19)
4th : 1.095 (23/21)
5th : 0.923 (24/26)
Top : 0.800 (20/25)
Drive chain: RK 428HO, 132

13000rpm divided by 3.5 (primary ratio) = 3714rpm (clutch hub rpm)

3714rpm diveded by 0.800(top gear) = 4642rpm (front sprocket rpm)

4642rpm diveded by 3.5 (final drive, 49/14) = 1326rpm (wheel rpm)

1326 x 0.001795 ( wheel circumfrance in Km, 1.795 mtr) = 2.38 kpm (kilometres per minute)

2.38 x 60 = 142.8 kmh

If you work out the wheel circumfrance by the 100/80 17 sizing (aspect ratio over width the wheel diameter ) = 1.855 mtrs. I measured the wheel cicumfrance from the valve down, marked the concrete and measure the length after one turn back to the valve down
Dont know if there would be any tyre swell at those speeds to change the amount?

When we were working out ratios and speeds with my mates drag bike they had 2 height/circumfrace changes from tyre swell. It was doing 145mph tho

But you gotta remember who they are accommodating; learners in this country. If a learner is sitting on a bike that he knows can get up to say 180 then they would be pretty stoked with that. I'm assuming they are an alright track bike too...?
This is very true, they are a great fun little thing to ride and thrash the pants off. I love them on a twisty road when I'm in the mood, but, I'd much rather a bit of torque too...for those hills and the traffic.

Unreal this thread has active content !

better late than never...

I've had my 1988 NSR250 off the clock a number of times clock ends at 190 and the needle was some way past that.. I'm guessing about 210km/h.

Had a mate on a gsxr400 with me on one run and i got tapped out before him but he had maybe 2km/h more top end... picking if i dropped a tooth on the rear
I would have had em beat

Very stable at that speed and no carbon was left on the pistons :)

Can't understand why people like 4 stroke 250's..... to slow :) LOL.....

Wait thats all you can buy now... what a shame it is... glad I had my fun when I did.

Ian.

Thats such a good call. 2 stroke twice as fast as 4, 250 4 stroke might as well slash my nut sack off.

my rgv goes past 180, then kph and the redline, i just derestricted my bike last Wednesday now its fucking mental. wheelies (leaning back) 1,2 and clutch 3rd and it will pop up. find me a 4 stroke that will do that. wont, to heavy, to slow. LONG LIFE POWERBAND

Dear sir.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to voice your concerns regarding my conduct. Because this is an online forum, members of this forum are free to give their opinion on various topics, some of which you may not agree with.

You seem to have launched your own personal vendetta against me, awarding me with abusive rep with alarming regularity and you seem rather obsessed with turning around any statements I make and attempting to use them against me.

Your behaviour is very similar to that of a 10 year old school child, you seem to thrive on bullying others in order to make yourself feel better about your own pathetic existence. It is very immature of you to act in such a manner, and it clearly displays your adolescent demeanor to everyone who views your rather mindless drivel.

If you are genuinely incapable of acting like a mature adult, then be my guest and continue your rather feeble attempts at defaming my reputation. It will only serve to make yourself appear even less respectable to other Kiwibiker members. If, however, you wish to prove that you are indeed a mature citizen as you often pretend you are then I would suggest that you quickly abolish this conflict between us.

If there is anything else I can help you with, or any matters you wish to be further clarified then please do not hesitate to send me a PM.

Yours sincerely,
SMOKEU

I am impressed that I have finally read a cohesive and terse post from you. It is well written and reflects well on you as a literate adult. That is far more than I have come to expect from you considering your usual attitude towards other posters on this forum.

Please do not take the red rep I have given you as a personal assault, merely as an indication that I had felt that what you had said was worthy of telling you that were a fucktard in that particular instance.

If you would prefer that I did not express my feelings about your posts with negative reputation I might suggest that you consider what you are saying before expressing it and asking yourself if it is really sensible and relevant.

Suck it up buddy and stop crying.

It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak and prove it.

PS:- Might i also suggest a reread through your post might be in order. My personal opinion is that your use of substances may be making you paranoid.

Your givn it shit in second make it lift. I have different sprocket sizes. I gt a renthal kit for rgv from the uk. I assume it contributes majorly to my ratios. So yer, i doubt a stock rgv would. It needs to be worked.

I could get one.like i said to the other guy my rgv has got different sized sprockets, i got more acceleration over top speed, the renthal kit i got downsizes from 14 to 13 and 43 to 41. I assume this contributes. But like i said it hits 180 and taps against itself, a digital speedo would be the one. To get a solid reading.

It's bloody quick and lifts the front wheel in second no sweat, he's doing it all the time but as has been said, it's geared slightly down and the front suspension is also a bit bouncy which helps heaps. These are fast bikes and will keep with a 600 to 100kph.

There's no doubt about that, I'd be quite interested to see an RGV launched properly. I only have 90 odd horse at the wheel, not much by now days standards, but, it doesn't have gearing like the newer 600s either and has more power down low. So I'll keep mine, because it's a great bike to ride every day and long distance

I'll take that bet. Having owned 4 RGV's they're certainly fast little bikes, but a semi decent ZZR600 is actually a deceptively fast machine. Not to mention will require no gear changes during the 0-100 sprint.

Check the tested times from the era, you'll probably find an RGV goes 0-100 in around 4.5 seconds, and a ZZR sub 4.

Haha I have no mechanical knowledge is this somethin to do with the carbs?

Yeah if I'm cruising at like 130ish in 5th it seems to almost lose power or limit power at around 11-12 ish revs, itll make it up to 140 but as I switch into 6th it just loses power and wont go any faster.

I think it may be due to the wind or something, but its still got another 3000 rpm till ride line to go at 140, I think the wind might be holding me back

The exhaust has a "balance box" just under the rear cylinder. When that is removed and you have made a set of sexy equal length headers it pulls better up top, I'd say the carbon build up and funny air-flow plates in the balance box cause turbulence and inhibit gas flow. It was the best thing I did to mine, made it much nicer to ride and sounded way better than just a silly loud exhaust can.

Mine ended up doing just under 160 before you'd change in to 6th and it would keep going (not very fast...but it's a 250). I had a higher profile rear tyre on it though to fuck with the gearing.

When I got mine it would pull 155 in to a head wind.

haha yea I doubt it too. Depends on your weight and aerodynamics eh. My fully faired CBR250R with exhaust and tune, and its engine in good condition really didnt make it much past 160.. maybe 170 with a tail wind or down hill and really head down/elbows and knees tucked in :D I weigh 87kg.

When I ran it without fairings that would be cut down top speed heaps, prob to the 150 mark and you wouldn't get much more out of it no matter how much you tucked in.

I'd say 150-155 is about what your going to get. you could always fit nitrous.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-05029-Sneeky-Pete-Hidden-DRY-Carbureted-Nitrous-Kit-/400260205914?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item5d315e0d5a

I wouldn't think so. That thing is going to be pushing against a huge amount of air. It works really well on a CB750 in terms of keeping the air off the rider but it's not designed with top speed in mind.

My 2t 250 road bike (rmx-250) has no trouble accelerating above 100, though it's geared fairly short. If I didn't care so much about my licence etc, 5th gear would end around 150 at a guess.
It's running a 15 tooth on the front, instead of the factory 13 tooth. But that's because it was sitting too much on the power at 100 in 5th... not the most relaxing thing to ride when it's so peaky at 100.

Would a big fairing like that be that much more efficient than a rider crouched over the tank? It's got a fair bit of extra air to move.

imdying
5th December 2011, 15:22
I don't know, but I would hazard a guess and say yes.

Compared to car, a bike is basically an aerodynamic brick. 300hp cars seem to get to 300km/hr just fine, even though they weigh over a thousand kilos. An average road bike weighs maybe 200kg and needs around 150hp to get to 300km/hr.

Leaning forward on the tank doesn't negate the front being all flat/bumpy with horrible forks/radiators and other un-aerodynamic shite. Even with all the flash fluid dynamic models in the world, they still don't know a lot, other than pointy objects have a lower cd.

All those figures are obviously just ball park shite to get a point across... anybody looking deeply into them and arguing them will either be ignored as a git, or scathingly ripped into in a manner not seen on KB for a wee while, at my discretion.

Yeah, the concept itself is fine, but yeah look for something lighter. Basically all you want is a top fairing from any thin and pointy. Assuming you don't go so thin as to have nothing to hide behind, then thinner is better. Have a good look at recent 125 and 250 GP bikes for pointers. They also go to the trouble of cleaning up the air coming off the bike too, FWIW.

That'd be a good start... tallish wide-ish screen to push the air over you whilst you're tucked.

Anyone remember the CBR600RR double bubble screen test they did in PB? Something crazy like a 19% improvement in the 140-150mph time just by changing to a double bubble. That's cheap HP right there.

At <100mph you're looking at picking up percentage points, not wholes, but every little bit counts right.

Comfort is fine but speed from 100 to 130 is an issue. Mainly for overtaking. Another 10% would make a huge difference. And at that speed a fairing could well help. I have a small Givi screen on that will help so maybe a bigger one.

The pic without me had a better mount set up.
My lights ran a separate mount to the fairing so I could remove it if I wanted, they could be (and were) adjusted. The lights were aftermarket and shit. Getting Honda ones would be far better and still cheap.

+1 to that. I doubt the 250cc 4 strokes will do much more than 170kmh. Maybe on a long road lying down on the fuel tank it might do 175kmh.

Well... not with all the road gear on anyway....

$5 says any of the 3LN FZR's will do a real 180 :Police:

doubt it. had one, and sure, the speedo says 180, but no way was it a legit 180.

too many people get carried away tugging on their tiny dicks trying to make them longer by bragging about the indicated speed that their bikes reached.
get a gps, with supporting video and then maybe Ill believe it.

I had an rg150 indicating around 190 on a long bit of road. Pretty confident it was closer to 145-150.

Speedometers are just interactive decoration.

The same speed issue goes for any bike and car.

So indicated compared to indicated is the real comparison. I wouldn't think it would be much more than 10k's out, if it is out by much at all.

Out & about recently in a very big paddock my mate was riding the wee Lanza showing 110kmh on the clock, higher would be cruel with low gearing me thinks. I was trying to get the KDX 250 working properly & it went past the DT like a rocket in 3rd. How fast do the green ones go?

will confirm it can do 175 on a 250 4 stroke, not the smartest on a naked bike, but yes, hug that tank.

Lol, SMOKEU obviously doesn't know shite about 4 stroke 250's, I've had my CBR250RR over 180kph several times, on my GPS, with only a couple of mods. Sprockets, jets and needles, a good air intake and exhaust, and that was about it.

In fact, the highest speed I recorded on it was 214kph (GPS again, and yes I do have the recorded 'track' to prove it) when I was running a highly modified set-up, but it wasn't economical for the street so I have since gone back to almost factory settings.

...and the number of times this thread has been resurrected astounds me!

I'd have to say, I'm sceptical of you GPS unit, either that, or you've got to do a proper run, and get in the record books if this link is to be believed. If you believe the link, the record for 250 4t is131.6 mph (211 km/h)

Really... And in your vast experience you'd know better, huh...?

Come back and talk to me when you've had over 15 years worth of working on engines, fabricating one-off custom parts, modifying suspension, brakes, frames and all forms of electrical componenets, and working on more than a few of New Zealand's best performance vehicles...

Yup, and it doesn't surprise me that they talk about the capabilities of the CBR250 engine at the end of that thread. If we had the facilities to set official records here in NZ, I'd definitely be keen.

Settle, down :) this ain't a pissing contest or anything. The tone of a message in a forum is often mis-read. I was merely stating what I found. I don't recall saying anything negative about your abilities, or implied you were a liar etc. simply stated perhaps try and make it official. and that I'm sceptical of GPS accuracy in general. A gps units accuracy can be quite a variable thing. Older units were horrible compared to modern SirfIII units etc.

An NC30 has a top speed of around 130mph, and thats a 400cc V4 with around 60HP.

So unless you can get a MC22 to put out that kind of HP, I would doubt the 130mph top speed on your bike.

Yarr drag and hp at the wheel would be the deciding factor at top speeds. vfr and cbr should be fairly similar in that respect.

It would make some difference but the effect would me minimal compared to drag and hp, the amount of drag caused by the larger profile of the heavier bloke would be way more noticeable.
