Just bought myself a wee piece of NZ:2thumbsup

Anyway its got this horrible garden that I want to rip out and pave so I can have a BBQ area.

What is the best way to do this?

Does anyone live out Rangiora way who wants to help in return for meat and beer?

How do you put down paving stones?

"See you paving stones.... You're a bunch of wankers"

That's how you do it.

It's pretty simple in theory and you can find out everything you need to know from a D.I.Y website. The best thing about it is if you fuck it up you can pull them up and start over.

Our first piece of NZ was in Rangiora. Hope you're happy there. Sorry for the silly reply. I'm over-tired...

I've lived here for a few years now and love it. Just close enough to CHCH but far enough away that life's a little slower.

Don't be sorry, you made me laugh with your "How to put down a brick"

Used to like to get home from work and take the back road to Oxford for a cuppa. Great way to unwind. Now live in ChCh for practical purposes but have one eye on moving out to a lifestyle block maybe near Cust at some point in the future. All depends on work I suppose.

As above ,just make sure you dig down to firm ground i.e clay.

if you have soft ground and or you want to pave an area where a car parks you might have to lay 150 mm of base course(biggish stones) compacted with a plate compactor from a hire place

Nope, just doing a BBQ area. Is paving hard? Or can a complete beginner do it and pull off a good job?

Not hard, done it a few times, just completed some under my clotheline last week, bordered around them in exposed aggregate concrete to hold them in.
Cuts made with a 100mm angle grinder (diamond blade can be had for app $15) and hammer, clean & precise, just need to make sure the sub base is good, and keep an eye on the finished level you are working to.

The work is getting the sand compact & level, compact & level and again, once the base is compact & level, you are literaly placing the pavers on top, then haunching the edges and sweeping the sand in the joints.
It is all in the base. Don't bother doing it when the sand is really wet. (we used to use limestone sand, now we use concrete sand).
