Fork oil and heat gun

I'm painting my forks, because they are stone chipped and look terrible, and i'm a pendantic prick.

I want to heat them up to around 20-30C with a heat gun, prior to paint application.

Now i'm a bit concerned that doing so may have an adverse effect on the fork oil, like thin it's viscosity.

I realise it will probably be fine, especially as it's not like I plan to get them all that hot, and they could get warmer from just sitting in the sun. But I just want to double check with some of the more knowledgeable persons on here. (I said knowledgeable, please no wild guesses, those I can make myself!)

Hmmm I'd flag the heat gun to remove the paint and get into rubber gloves and some paint stripper. In fact rubber gloves and a stripper full stop sound good ...........:shifty:

Obviously cover everything you don't want stripped in plastic before applying it and remove the front wheel and guard and unbolt the calipers so the fork lowers are easy to work on.

Once the paint is off wash down with clean water and a suitable solvent to remove any traces of grease etc.

Sorry I guess I was'nt clear on what I meant. I just mean to heat the surface before paint application, so only very briefly.

Use a hair dryer, it'll be plenty hot enough to warm up the forks for painting but not hot enough to do any damage.

I'd be more worried about the seals with using a heat gun, the oil will be fine.

Usually i'm the guy with the ideas and can work things out but I did'nt even think of that! :stupid: :laugh:

I'm sure the seals should be ok, it was the oil I was worried about more than anything.

Stick them in a bucket of hot water,then dry them off.

FF--Dude I'd be more concerned with getting the forks completely contaminant free than with heating them up. Unless its seriously not warm the paints gonna be fine.
If you want to dude just bring the forks to me and Ill sort em out for ya

Lol, yeah I had to find a way to hold the bolts.......first thing I thought of, until I remembered the "broken" rake!

Yeah the gold turned out pretty good. It really gave me the shits the rusty clamp.

I used a metallic black on the forks, so it glistens a bit in the sun which is pretty cool.

Looks good. What method did you use to apply your paint , gun or rattlecan for e.g?
