sitting at the lights just now. Some dude in a V8 holden obviously wants to drag. I don't mind as long as its only up to the speed limit :innocent:
light goes green and I give it alot of revs and drop the clutch.... bike takes off and I feel the front wheel rising :shit: can't of been more than a few inches off the road but, I was quite stoked. :Punk:

Obviously its not something I am going to make a habit of :innocent: I want my bike to last quite a few years yet.

Getting high is not as bad as the trip back down.

thankyou mate..... yeah, you're quite right. thats exactly why I won't be making a habit of it on public roads. I really don't want to become one of those riders. I can see how people get a thrill out of it though.

hell yes..... I find it quite funny how people in cars often want to drag me off at the lights. I don't have anything to prove. Any bike will usually win without even trying. Cagers need to be taught about power to weight ratio.

It has happened a couple of times to me in second gear when I was a bit slow on letteing the clutch out. It was uphill, so I guess it is easier to accidentally wheelie.

Not happy about banging my forks too hard.

I would imagine it would be much more common on a bigger bike like yours. Mines only a 650 and takes quite some reving up to get the wheel off the ground. I just know my baby wouldn't like it.

I did a wheelie once on my CG125 when I launched it a bit hard.

Wish I knew how to pull a wheelie. I mean I'm told I have the perfect bike to do it on but worried I might wheelie too far back

I surpose I should try at least once concidering I'm going to replace my steering head bearings soon anyway.

Don't do it at night. Everything in front of you goes dark.

good on ya. I managed the same thing while coming off a one way bridge and decided to overtake the truck and trailer going up a hill - bit freaky, but fun :woohoo:

Now you are familiar with the feeling, be ready for it next time, maybe even let it climb a bit higher :shifty:, just keep a smooth throttle so you dont slam the wheel back into the ground.

Had a wee play on my cr125 doing wheelies the other day, despite the rather brutal powerband, its not too difficult to controll by small throttle adjustments. You can get quite a lot of high before you are in any danger of going over too.

Personally i dont see the big deal with wheelies, but then i spose you road guys cant do jumps so wheelies are the next best thing perhaps?

note: wheelies should always be performed off road, or at least on a clear road with no other traffic!

Really? I thought wheelies should always be performed on a road which is not clear and with plenty of other traffic.

The old honda XR 500 A and XL 500 S used to be the ultimate wheelie machines, that big 23" front wheel would just drift up every time.

Pulling away from a friends place 4 am in the dark in the country, on a new bike. I go to turn the headlight on high beam and flicked the kill switch...senior moment....realizing my mistake I flicked it back on....with 1/2 or more throttle...in 2nd...:shit::shit::shit:*^&$%#!!!!!

Intentional controlled wheelies are one thing but.....

I'm too scared to give it a try... Taken off at the lights many times, but always less than required to lift the front and enough to pull clear of cars easily.

Been told the best way to learn is on a trail / off road or old banger bike.

On the first day I picked up my Thunderbird I was taking it around the 'burbs when an old codger in a SRT8 Chrysler 300C wanted to see how fast my bike would go at the lights. He let her rip with the screaming V8. I let him go as I only had about 20kms on the clock.
Maybe after the first service!

I haven't consciously tried to lift the front up but it happens occasionally while shutting down boy racer gits that want to drag every bike they see.
You have to grow old but you don't have to grow up.

You naughty naughty boy, don't ever do that again. Its bastards like you that give us a bad name! And if you believe what I just said I have a piece of swampland in Eketahuna that'd make a perfect farm you might want to buy.

My first wheelie on this current bike was much the same. A boy racer twat in a vtec civic thought he could really drag me. I just gave it a huge handful and before you knew it I was looking skyward. Must have looked good cause I landed it gracefully and beat the civic like a rented mule. Kinda shit myself just a touch that first time but now I do it all the time. The Duc has quite predictable acceleration and is very stable on one wheel. And another big plus is the tank has a perfect indent for your knees to control the bike and let you see where your going.

On the VTR, it has a torque peak quite low in the rev range (around 4.5k rpm, or somesuch?) All you have to do is give it a bit of a handful at around 4k rpm. Alternatively, take off, then when the revs get to 6k, button off just momentarily, and hit the throttle again.
You have to go what feels like VERY high (pretty much vertical) before you're in any danger of looping it. Wheelies of anywhere from a few cm to a half metre or so on the VTR happen without even deliberately trying.

I had no idea how, and got angry watching all my mates crack them out everywhere. So i went up and down the street on the 955 in 1st goin slow and then fanging on the gas. And nothing happend, nothing happend, nothing happend then it just went right on up and back down beautifully. Sadly no one saw it so it technically doesnt exist and i was far to tramatised to try again. Will get it well sorted on the dirt first i think.
Good on you for getting it there by accident!!!!!! How exciting. :sweatdrop

I'm to old & poor to pop it up anymore, but if you want to do it, on a private road of course, find a speed bump to accelerate over, move your weight back & gradually increase your throttle at each attempt until the acceleration & unloading of the forks off the crest let the front lift. Keep your rear brake covered & be smooth with the throttle. Don't panic & slam the front, let it float down. Move your body weight forward after the front starts to come up & you will begin to balance against the throttle. if their are any crests or brows on roads near you, you can do the same thing but you will be travelling faster.
Don't beat me up on this, I think a lot of riders have accidentally popped the front & got a fright. I believe it is safer if you know what is happening & have control, same thing applies to the back stepping out, first time can be scary if you have never felt it before. Use your head, Safety & Control at all times. :sweatdrop

Accidental....wheelie?

They happen, I accidentally pulled a wheelie on a Gixxer 1000 when I was more used to a 750 at the time. No viagra needed for that bike to get it up that's for sure.

The first night I had the triple I kept doing accidental weelies but I am now learning to keep the front wheel on the ground.

You'll find Takutai Ave now has a fookin' sweet one too. Well technically it's a roundabout, but it gives the same end result.

My accidental wheelie was spectacular, full on sky-view and number plate sparks the works.....
My arm was freshly out of a cast and had a nerve spasm in the right wrist (true, honest!)

Amazing how high a GSXR1100 can get when you open the throttle without meaning too (and how hard it is to clean the jeans out afterwards LOL)
