Picked up my the bandit at 11 this morning, first bike and I was happy as a pig in shit. Drove it home and then practiced some hill starts on the slope by the car park out the back (probably about 50 odd stalls before I got it going).
Then decided to drive out to my parents to show them my bike, about 40 minutes driving and i was coming up to a round about braking and shifting down, then gave it a bit of gas to come out of the round about and shift up and it just died. looked at the fuel and looked low. luckily there was a gas station just across the road so i filled up. Went to start it up and the starter motor is going but it wouldnt turn over. managed to get it back to the olds on a trailer but I don't have any mechanical knowlege so i don't know where to start. Anybody have any ideas? If it helps I had the carbs rejetted before it was delivered to me.

Starter motors going but it wont turn over?Is the starter motor making a noise?if so what?If its just died and theres no starter motor i wonder if when going round the roundabout you have flicked the kill switch.

..Went to start it up and the starter motor is going but it wouldnt turn over.
Do you mean that the starter motor was turning the engine over but it wouldn't start / run?
Reading your post it was going 100% fine and jsut died with no warning when you changed up gears?
What model bandit?
I doubt if it is gas, but if the fuel tap has a "Prime" position on it, then turn it there for a couple of miuntes and try to start again. If you can also switch off the head lights then do that while starting it.

first thing i checked was the kill switch and it is definitely not the problem. The motor is turning but it is not fireing. it is a '96 250 bandit.
I as i changed gears through the roundabout it struggled for second then as i let the throttle off a bit it died.
Can't see a prime switch but i'd be happy to be corrected in saying its not there.

My moneys on electrics not a fuel issue, best place to start is take the plug out earth it against head and turn it over to check for spark,if theres none check your fuses,if there ok try another plug and work back from there.

managed to find an old manual and found what i think is a prime position. i had it going for about 40 seconds before it died again. May have flooded it now so i'm giving it 15 before i go try again.

im gessing (as i have the 600, ) the lights are always on (off being when ya turn off the key) if so lesson number one with starting issues, it to pull both the headlight fuses out. saves ya battery a bit
as i said im working from how my bandit it
in general it is a bitch to start.
dont use the throttle when starting it, especaly if chock is on. they chock/flood easy.
90 precent of time for me its been becouse of...
Fuel. either water or dirt has contaminated or created a blockage in it
after that it gets into float valves & ignition issues

think i may have flooded it and the battery is pretty much dead. tried to do a running start with my old man pushing me but then the rain started to come down and i gave it away. I've got a trickle charger on it and will give it another go in the morning.

I've got a 96 250 Bandit, I let the fuel run real low once before flicking it over to reserve, it died. The bugger took ages to get going again.... Just stabbed at the start button every now and then till it spluttered into life.
And BabyB, my lil Bandit is the same to start, no throttle, just a quick blip then leave alone whilst I get my gear on.

Ok so where did you pick your bike up from?, Private sale or bike shop?, if from a bike shop, give them a ring on monday.
If private sale, bike could require tune up & service, would also get carbs cleaned, and an in line fuel filter fitted if there is not one already.
You could have run out of your main tank, and needed to swap over to reserve, if you have a vacume operated fuel valve, there should be a prime position on it, turn valve to this position, wait about 30sec's, then try starting as mentioned by others above, once running switch over to main tank, if tank full.

Not a good idea to turn bike over, they prefer to run on tyres, and then you'd get squished...............

I'm back on the road!! This is pretty much exactly what happened happened to me. Left the bike at the old mans last night and he gave it a go about an hour after I got home, roared to life. So after my first awesome 40 minutes in the sunshine yesterday my second ride was from the hutt to wellington in the dark with a southerly throwing hail at me and the wind trying to knock me over. Thanks to all you guys for giving advice to newbie and to my old man for picking me up in on a trailer and putting up with my grumpy arse last night.

carb was probably flooded, there are drain screws on the carb, learn where they are and always drain the carb if the bike dosent want to start.

Interesting...my old 93 250 bandit would run rough on anything LESS than 98 and I know of another bandit that was like that too.

I've had the carbs cleaned and balanced since then, dunno if that would make a difference.
